The 2021 Cannes Film Festival was a celebration. Buyers and sellers were genuinely delighted to see each other in the sunshine on the Croisette after a two-year absence, and to watch great films with their vaccinated peers in the Palais. Everyone returned with a fresh perspective; many spent time in lockdown focusing on new strategies. There’s no shortage of titles in the pipeline, thanks to increased investment in early productions — the better to compete with streamers, of course.

We're smack dab in the middle of baseball season, but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate a good football movie.
Football has taken a hit in recent years. It's often plagued with news about assaults, drugs, and incessant politics that keep the focus places other than the field and gameplay.
Enter 12 Mighty Orphans, which reminds us how football can be used to unite and raise marginalized kids from obscurity into fine young men.
Family-friendly, inspirational films once proliferated movie theaters, but an obsession with crime and violence have culled dramatic efforts from most venues, but this Ty Roberts-directed film from a script he, Lane Garrison, and Kevin Meyer adapted from Larry Dent's novel bucks the trend.
Luke Wilson stars in 12 Might Orphans as Rusty Russell, a legendary Texas football coach who coached football for the Masonic Home and School orphanage from 1927-1941.

It turns out that the character of Arthur “Boo” Radley in the 1962 classic To Kill a Mockingbird actually did speak. Robert Duvall revealed that he had one line (later cut) as the character in what was his first film, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee.

Even at its best, the summer box office to date has shown mixed results that should have anyone in the exhibition feeling nervous about the future. But some of them are showing signs that they’re ready to pivot.
In a significant development that went relatively unnoticed, Cinemark, the third-largest domestic exhibitor in the U.S., recently announced a partnership with Mission Control, an e-sports firm, to host gaming events and related activities to many of their U.S. theaters. This is a smart move and part of what we are likely to see more of as exhibitors, faced with reduced grosses and fewer films released by studios to theaters, innovate with ways to monetize their screens in other ways than showing movies.
Of course, films will still serve as the bulk of the in-auditorium revenue, and there are green shoots showing some semblance of decent results. “A Quiet Place Part II...

Sunday Am Update: The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is coming in higher over five days with $17M and a 3-day of $11.7M at 3,331 locations. It’s an Ok result, and better than expected, but it’s not a result that has the town skipping about the return of the summer box office as the pandemic winds down, especially over what is typically a lucrative Father’s Day weekend.
Speaking of Father’s Day, wouldn’t it be nice to have a Pixar film in the marketplace instead of for free on Disney+? With NYC and LA permitting cinema capacities to rise to 100% this weekend, Luca, no matter how unknown the IP is, would have truly rained some cash on exhibition. Disney can’t act clueless here and claim they didn’t know capacity limitations would be this high. It was clear with Covid cases coming down and vaccinations increasing...

CineMovie was honored to interview Robert Duvall for his cameo role in the inspirational movie 12 Mighty Orphans, based on the true story of football coach hero Rusty Russell. In talking about the movie, he says football is his favorite sport and the greatest game ever invented, which may explain why he took such a small role in the new film starring Luke Wilson as the Texas hero, Martin Sheen, Wayne Knight, and Treat Williams. '12 Mighty Orphans' Movie Is Not Just Another Football Movie Says Director Ty Roberts & Martin Sheen
12 Mighty Orphans is not just a football movie in the vein of Friday Night Lights and other football movies, according to director Ty Roberts and star Martin Sheen. 12 Mighty Orphans is based on the true story of Texas football coach Rusty Russell's (played by Luke Wilson) formation of a football team at an orphanage whose team went all the way to the playoffs. ...

It’s hard to imagine a football coach starting off with less than real-life hero Rusty Russell (Luke Wilson) does when he arrives at Fort Worth’s Masonic Home in “12 Mighty Orphans”: No shoes for his team, no field for his team and no team. Nothing but potential, you might say, and that’s just enough for an optimist to work with.
A veteran of World War I and an orphan in his own right, Russell took those shortcomings and revolutionized the game. He motivated just enough players to form a team and then innovated the so-called spread offense to take on bigger squads from stronger schools. The “Mighty Mites,” as they came to be known, embody practically everything that underdog sports movies are made of, and director Ty Roberts’ treatment (derived from Jim Dent’s fact-based book) hits nearly all the feel-good notes we’ve come to expect from the genre,...

Ok, last week on weekly The Playlist Podcast, Mike DeAngelo’s interviewed Luke Wilson about his new football drama, “12 Mighty Orphans,” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last week. You can listen to the interview below, but we wanted to highlight a couple of interesting tidbits from it.

We couldn’t help ask Wilson about his work with Wes Anderson and “The Royal Tenenbaums.” Wilson and his brother Owen were college friends with Anderson, and all of them launched their careers in 1997 with the hilariously deadpan “Bottle Rocket” (the third Wilson brother Andrew appeared in it too).

Having spent most of my life in New England, where sports are the way of life and the Patriots hoard more cultural cachet than the Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins, and maybe even the mayor combined, I have never understood football’s appeal as entertainment or as a pastime. Against these odds, Ty Roberts’ new movie, “12 Mighty Orphans,” has opened my eyes by couching Americans’ passion for the game in a time of national duress: The Dust Bowl, smack-dab in the middle of the Great Depression, when football became a symbol on which deprived and destitute Americans could imprint their hopes and dreams.

After a Covid-induced hiatus, Tribeca Festival returns with in-person premieres and an exciting mix of studio productions and low-fi indies. The festival has ditched the word “film” from its title in order to emphasize the fact that Tribeca now encompasses podcasting, gaming, TV and so much more. But who are they kidding? For most New Yorkers, it’s all about the movies. With that in mind, here are 11 films that should be on every festival-goer’s must-see list.
12 Mighty Orphans
Director: Ty Roberts
Cast: Luke Wilson, Vinessa Shaw, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Wayne Knight, Jake Austin Walker
Meet your next uplifting sports drama. In the tradition of “Rudy” or “Hoosiers” comes “12 Mighty Orphans,” the story of the Mighty Mites, the football team of a Fort Worth orphanage who became unlikely Texas state championship contenders. In the process, their plucky come-from-nowhere run inspired a country reeling from the Great Depression.

Consider it a celebration with something of an asterisk: in-person film festivals are back! But so are virtual components, making some of the year’s biggest cinematic events both safe and accessible for an even wider audience to enjoy them. After a cancelled 2020 edition and a delayed 2021 event, the Tribeca Festival is bellying up for a hybrid event with a major in-person edge, with lots to watch, no matter in which manner you choose to consume it.
In March, the festival announced that it would “transform prominent locations into an expansive 12-day multi-screen outdoor celebration” held this month, and is believed to be first major North American film festival to mount such an in-person event.
Director Jon M. Chu’s long-awaited “In the Heights,” adapted from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, will open the 20th anniversary edition of Tribeca on June 9. The festival will also celebrate the world...

"You can either work the field, or play the field." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed an official trailer for an indie football drama titled 12 Mighty Orphans, based on the true historical account of a young football team playing during the Great Depression (in the 1930s). The sports film – starring Luke Wilson, Martin Sheen, Vinessa Shaw, and Robert Duvall – tells the story of the Mighty Mites, the football team from a Fort Worth, TX orphanage who, during the Great Depression, went from playing without shoes—or even a football—to playing for the Texas state championships. Play on, boys! 12 Mighty Orphans is adapted from Jim Dent's bestselling book of the same name, and it also co-stars Wayne Knight, Jake Austin Walker, Treat Williams, Ron White, and Scott Haze. This doesn't look particularly good in any way, but it is the kind of underdog football story that some American viewers will eat up.
