Women’s History Month may be over, but that doesn’t mean that women aren’t leading many of Hulu’s top picks for April. The month begins with the premiere of Vanderpump Villa, a Hulu Original reality series that follows Lisa Vanderpump and the hand-selected staff members employed at her lavish French estate, Chateau Rosabelle. This next chapter in the Vanderpump saga is sure to be full of drama, decadence, and debauchery as the staff caters to Vanderpump, her wealthy guests, and their own desires.
Hulu Original Under the Bridge, based on the 1997 true-crime novel of the same name, also premieres this month. This limited series follows the investigation of Reena Virk’s disappearance –the fourteen-year-old left to meet some friends and never returned home. Starring Riley Keough and Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone, Under the Bridge has all the makings of a true-crime hit. Rounding out this month,...

When "Stranger Things" launched in 2016, most of its cast were virtual unknowns. Aside from veteran stars like Winona Ryder, the show was the first leading role for many of its cast members, especially the younger kids. Part of what made the show work so well was the fact that all those young kids were supremely-talented. The Netflix hit asks a lot from its stars — lots of action, lots of emotion — and every member of the ever-growing ensemble is up to the task, which makes for a fun watch.
It's also a useful launching pad for further stardom. The series tends to take breaks between seasons — three years passed between Seasons 3 and 4 — leaving the cast free to pursue other acting opportunities. This raises their profiles, providing them a solid base from which to hopefully continue their careers after "Stranger Things" comes to an end with its fifth season. Unsurprisingly, a lot...

"I was trying to steal him back! There's a difference." Hulu has revealed the official trailer for a romantic comedy film titled Rosaline, a new twist on Shakespeare's classic Romeo & Juliet. This sounds fun and best of all - it's from the screenwriters of 500 Days of Summer and The Fault in Our Stars, and made by the director of Yes God Yes, all of which are outstanding films. Rosaline is a comedic retelling of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," told from the point of view of Romeo's jilted ex, Rosaline, the woman that Romeo first claims to love before he falls for Juliet. She gets jealous and "schemes to foil the famous romance and win back her guy." The film stars Kaitlyn Dever as Rosaline, along with Bradley Whitford, Minnie Driver, Christopher McDonald, Sean Teale, Henry Hunter Hall, and Nico Hiraga; plus Isabela Merced & Kyle Allen as Juliet & Romeo. This looks quite fun,...

The tale of the young, star-crossed lovers known as "Romeo & Juliet" has been told and retold for centuries, but Hulu and 20th Century Studios have a whole new perspective to bring to the table. In a comedic twist on William Shakespeare's classic romantic tragedy, the tale of "Romeo & Juliet" is being retold through the lens of Rosaline, the gal Romeo was exclusively dating before he ran into Juliet at a party and completely turned his entire life (and family) upside down. Rosaline is devastated when she learns that her boyfriend has left her for someone new, and goes on a mission to break the two of them up and win back the man of her dreams.
"Rosaline" looks to be taking the anachronistic approach of Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet" and inverting it, with classic period garb and set dressings injected with contemporary language and sensibilities.

Another month, another slew of movies and TV shows take their final bow before leaving Netflix for different digital pastures. Usually, these exits come as the result of an expiring licensing agreement and indicate the project will end up on a different service or on VOD, but this month has one program exiting that may end up being catapulted into the virtual void. With the spooky season well underway and horror taking the front seat, don't forget about some of these other goodies you keep telling yourself you'll get around to watching because they might not be there when you're ready. Here are some of the best shows and movies leaving Netflix in October of 2022.

Natalia Dyer is starring alongside Rachel Keller and Danny Ramirez in “Chestnut,” a queer love triangle drama that marks the feature film debut of director Jac Cron. Shot on location and named for the epicenter of queer culture in Philadelphia, Chestnut, the film quietly wrapped production this month. It’s eyeing an early 2022 festival premiere.
Dyer stars as a recent graduate who becomes unexpectedly entangled in a relationship with a man and a woman during an aimless summer after college, with Keller and Ramirez forming the other corners of the love triangle. The film also stars Chella Man (HBO Max’s “Titans”) and Caleb Eberhardt, and features a score

Two millennials in New York City form a friends-with-benefits contract … what could possibly go wrong?
The first trailer for “Dating and New York,” the movie version of the TikTok trend “two best friends in a room … they might kiss,” explores the trials and tribulations of romantic relationships in the age of read receipts.
The modern love story follows the perpetually single Milo (Jaboukie Young-White) and Wendy (Francesca Reale), who match on a dating app. Rather than ghosting each other or settling into a relationship, the two form a written agreement to hook up without feelings, one that will test the resolve of their otherwise seemingly perfect dynamic.
“This is going to end poorly for you,” Milo’s friend tells him.
For Wendy and Milo, their fate is decided when one of them catches real feelings, and they must figure out how to remain friends, knowing they love one another, or...

In “Dating & New York,” the film’s central romance isn’t your grandparents’ — or even your parents’ — standard meet cute.
The main characters, single, 20-something New Yorkers Milo (Jaboukie Young-White) and Wendy (Francesca Reale), don’t bump into each other at a bookstore or in the produce section of Trader Joe’s. No, the eventual will-they-or-won’t-they couple become acquainted on a dating app.
“There are so many new rules to the game of modern dating,” says the film’s 30-year-old director Jonah Feingold, who lives in Brooklyn. “Even back when our parents were meeting, it seemed very wholesome, simple. You sat next to each other on an airplane, you were neighbors, you met in law school.”
That’s not the way that many millennials are getting to know one another. A Stanford University study found that nearly half of heterosexual couples met their romantic partner online. It’s...

Actress Natalia Dyer, who is currently seen in the film "Yes, God, Yes", feels religion is a beautiful thing but it is also important to take a step back from it at times.
"While I believe religion is beautiful, I think it's also important to sometimes take a step back from it to ponder and question what you've learnt and what you think you know. Because without keeping that curiosity and the questioning alive, you invariably kind of lose yourself - who you really are."
"So I think it's just about keeping an open mind and letting people make mistakes and giving people the space to explore and to learn from mistakes and to have conversations," she added.
"Yes, God, Yes" is about around a teenager's journey through learning the Catholic views on premarital sex and sexual curiosities, heightened by pop culture influences.

Filmmaker Karen Maine reveals the online success of her short film "Yes, God, Yes" prompted her to turn it into a fullfledged film.
"Yes, God, Yes" received 2.9 million views and also won Best Short at the St. Louis International Film Festival upon being premiered in 2017 as a Vimeo Staff Pick. It was after the success of the short that Maine along with producers Katie Cordeal and Colleen Hammond went ahead to make it into a full-length feature film.
Starring Natalia Dyer in the lead, the film is based on a Catholic teenager in the early '00s who, after an innocent AOL chat that turns racy, discovers masturbation and struggles to suppress her urges in the face of eternal damnation.
Maine said: "I had written the short film for 'Yes, God, Yes' in 2014, and the plan had always been to get someone else to direct it because I didn't have directing experience.

Netflix continues to dominate the streaming industry during the Halloween season by adding a lot of new titles each and every day. And the latest batch of movies and original series, releasing this coming week, certainly don’t look like they’ll disappoint.
Courtesy of the Covid-19 pandemic, the entertainment industry is currently in shambles. While a few directors, like Tenet‘s Christopher Nolan, push to reopen theaters with the necessary health precautions, dire circumstances have made this an impossibility for a lot of communities around the world. Luckily, streaming services have proven to be a great substitute for many people. Though in fairness, even before the global outbreak, these platforms were slowly turning into a preference in countless households.
I mean, imagine a juggernaut like Netflix, whose library of content spans several thousand movies, TV series, and documentaries, which you can access from the comfort of your sofa. Obviously,...

Let’s talk about sex (and movies).

With less than three weeks before U.S. theaters reopen August 21, major studios have slowed their PVOD releases. With the promise of reopening comes a shot at a profitable theatrical life, but the PVOD revolution continued apace with Liongate’s “The Secret: Dare to Dream.” It immediately reached as high as #1 on VOD charts on Friday.
The film is the very definition of a high-concept presale: A self-help book published in 2006, “The Secret” was an Oprah Winfrey Club title that sold 30 million copies. Directed by Andy Tennant (“Hitch”), it stars Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas. Gravitas Ventures and Roadside Attractions acquired it last November, and planned an April theatrical release. After the theaters closed, it moved to Roadside partner Lionsgate, which has a dedicated VOD division. It opened July 31 on PVOD at $19.99.
On FandangoNow, it landed immediately as #1 and holds the slot for the full week, despite having only three days of release.

Obvious Teen: Maine Finds Nostalgia in a Hopeless Place
Of the many aspects particular to the late 1990s and early 2000s, where cell phones were in the evolutionary transition from advanced pagers to the devices which would rule our lives and when AOL chatrooms provided many people of a certain age with their introduction to sexuality, there’s a lot which hasn’t been astutely conveyed on film in this timeframe outside of nostalgic homage.
Karen Maine, co-writer of Gillian Robespierre’s Obvious Child (2014), makes her directorial debut with Yes, God, Yes, based on a previous short film which is also a semi-autobiographical take on growing up a Catholic schoolgirl in the early 00s of the conservative Midwest.…...

Amazon Studios brings the story of Marie Curie to the screen with Radioactive starring Oscar-nominated actress Rosamund Pike as the pioneering scientist.
Directed by Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis) and written by Jack Thorne, Radioactive is based on the 2010 graphic novel Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout by Lauren Redniss. The film adaptation follows Curie’s life and the legacy of scientific breakthroughs. At the same time, the story tells the darker consequences that came about after her amazing work.
Curie married fellow scientist Pierre Curie (Sam Riley) who went on to raise two daughters and change the face of science forever by jointly winning the Nobel for the discovery of radium in 1903. After the death of her husband, Curie continues her research and invites scandal when she has an affair with another prominent scientist, Paul Langevin (Aneurin Barnard). However, it is Marie’s commitment to science which prevails,...

While there’s no new season of Stranger Things this summer, a selection of supporting stars from the ensemble are taking the lead in new features this year. Arriving this week is Yes, God, Yes, starring Natalia Dyer, and in a few weeks, the Joe Keery-led thriller Spree will be getting a release.
Directed by Eugene Kotlyarenko, it follows a social media-obsessed livestreamer who has quite a dark side, as seen in the first red band trailer. Our friend Nick Allen said in his Sundance review, “As Keery’s performance is progressively devilish but always recognizable, Spree brilliantly shows influencer culture for the totally demented lifestyle that it is. “
See the trailer below for the film also starring Sasheer Zamata, Mischa Barton, John DeLuca, Josh Ovalle, Lala Kent, Frankie Grande with Kyle Mooney and David Arquette.

Offering a title with the exclamatory promise of “Yes, God, Yes” and opening with the (partial) definition of tossed salad, the feature directorial debut from “Obvious Child” writer Karen Maine isn’t short on foreplay. But where her Sundance breakout offered spiky truths wrapped in candid laughs, this SXSW winner is more content to play it safe. A sex comedy that carries what might be the gentlest R-rating in recent memory, “Yes, God, Yes” is a mostly routine romp through a well-worn genre that fails to ignite a climactic spark.
In the classrooms of a nondescript, ordinary Midwest Catholic high school, Father Murphy’s (Timothy Simons) cringe-worthy assertion that men are like microwaves and women are like conventional ovens is what passes for sex education.

Vertical Entertainment is proud to present Yes, God, Yes, the semi-autobiographical debut from filmmaker Karen Maine, co-writer of Obvious Child. Yes, God, Yes is a fresh, fun look at what solo explorations of sexuality can look like for a girl in the Midwest. Featuring a talented roster of young actors and comedy veterans, toplined by the enormously appealing Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things), the film premiered at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival, where it was awarded a Special Jury Prize for Best Ensemble. Vertical Entertainment will premiere the film in Virtual Cinemas and select drive-ins on Friday, July 24, and the film will launch on digital and VOD platforms on Tuesday, July 28.
In the Midwest in the early 00s, sixteen-year-old Alice (Natalia Dyer) has always been a good Catholic girl. But when an AOL chat turns racy, she discovers masturbation and becomes guilt-ridden. Seeking redemption, she attends a mysterious religious retreat to try and suppress her urges,...

"His spirit moved each of you to sign up for this retreat." Vertical Entertainment has released a second, full-length trailer for the coming-of-age, sexual awakening comedy called Yes, God, Yes, which originally premiered at the SXSW Film Festival last year. This semi-autobiographical film is described as "a fresh, fun look at what solo explorations of sexuality can look like for a girl in the Midwest." Alice, a devout Catholic teen in the early 2000s, discovers her sexuality and the pleasures of masturbation, and struggles to suppress her new urges in the face of eternal damnation. Starring Natalia Dyer (from "Stranger Things") as Alice, joined by Timothy Simons, Susan Blackwell, Alisha Boe, Donna Lynne Champlin, plus Wolfgang Novogratz. Out of all the indie sex comedies coming up this year, this looks like the best one. Kinky and smart, and also a fun guide for rejecting the ridiculousness of religion. This might actually be worth a watch.

Although we may be past the heyday of studio sex comedies, and comedies in general when it comes to Hollywood output, the indie film world is picking up the slack and next month will bring a highly-acclaimed one. Stranger Things star Natalia Dyer is breaking out of the family-friendly Netflix mold for Yes, God, Yes. Directed by Karen Maine (co-writer of Obvious Child), the semi-autobiographical debut explores sexuality for one girl growing up in the Midwest. Following a premiere at last year’s SXSW, where it won a Special Jury Prize for Best Ensemble, the first full trailer has arrived.
John Fink said in our SXSW review, “Similar to last year’s inclusive comedy Blockers–which proved teen girls deserve their own kind of high school sex comedy like the boys have enjoyed for years–Yes, God, Yes continues to evolve the genre while remaining completely grounded in its complexities and contradictions.

This morning Vertical Entertainment reports a company VOD record for the release of Bron Studios Josh Trank Tom Hardy gangster pic Capone with a 10-day gross of $2.5M-plus.
Capone was released on May 12 via on-demand platforms including, but not limited to, iTunes, where it soared to #1 on the charts within its first 3 days of release. VOD figures aren’t always readily reported, but perhaps with more movies going to the platform during Covid-19, distributors will make them more transparent. Reports last had Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour at close to $100M off Pvod, but Warner Bros. never reported anything last weekend on their in-home release of Scoob which was available both for 48-hour rental and digital purchase.
To give you some idea of the momentum of Capone: The pic’s first 10 days rep close to 40% of what Radius’ Bong Joon Ho 2014 movie Snowpiercer made over its first...

If you grew up a follower of the Catholic faith, you know all about shame and guilt. Coded right into the DNA of the religion is the knowledge that God is watching you and that you’re bound to break one of the many, many rules that you should live your life by. Yes, God even saw you when you discovered Internet porn for the first time, which is chronicled in the new film, “Yes, God, Yes.”
