The Rookie (2018)
Engaging and Entertaining
If you are looking for a show to watch that is Drama, funny, keeps you engaged episode after episode, then I highly recommend The Rookie.
I have not been a Nathan Fillion fan for long bu after I finished watching his series "Castle", and saw he had a new one, I had to watch. I was hooked from the first episode.
When I started watching, I didn't realize till a few episodes in that Melissa O'Neil was from another show I had watched previously, "Dark Matter". She was a strong female lead there ,and has not disappointed here.
The rest of the cast is phenomenal. Eric Winter is great as Tim Bradford, and does "Tim Tests" for the rookies which can get pretty crazy. Alyssa Diaz is awesome, and Richard Jones is Awesome as the commander.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
Passable, but not great.
I went into this movie with a somewhat hopefulness that it would be enjoyable, and some parts were, while other parts really were just a drag. I don't know about anyone else, but the little girl just bothered me, just like she did in Godzilla vs Kong. Her constantly looking like she's about to cry got old really quick. And then to find out she's the Expected Savior from Skull Island foretold in ancient carvings. OMG how many times is this boring trope gonna be used.
Bernie was honestly a useless character. After he figured out it was a distress signal, he provided no useful information or development of the story. He was intended as comic relief, and just wasn't funny.
Oh, and how convenient that the abandoned project that would "extra Arm" Kong just happened to be in the hollow world all this time. YAWN.
One big plus about the movie though, no Millie Bobbie Brown.
Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part One (2024)
Not Crisis on Infinite Earths you know
I grew up reading DC comics, and in my heyday of collecting, was reading about 30 different titles a month. During that time, one of the biggest DC Universe changes was a limited series titled Crisis on Infinite Earths. At the time, it had been determined the DC Universe was getting too big, so they created this storyline to help them make drastic changes across multiple storylines and compartmentalize the universe.
And it was AMAZING.
It was one of my favorite story lines, and when I heard about this Crisis on Infinite Earths movie trilogy, I was excited. But I clearly shouldn't have been.
After receiving & watching the first movie, I quickly realized, this is not my CoIE. It is a crisis based in the current animated movie timeline. And even the special features segment "Crisis Primer" basically says these 10 or so movies play into the connection and lead up to Crisis.
So without knowing this, although I've seen a few of them, I have not seen all of them, so Crisis makes absolutely no sense.
At least when the CW did their "version" of Crisis, it followed the basic premise of the original Comic series. But this, other than throwing in the Anti-matter wave and the Monitor, and a few select characters, it doesn't look like Crisis at all.
I'm going to try to watch the "prequel/primer" movies and see if my opinion changes, but right now, i'm pretty disappointed.
The Beekeeper (2024)
Thoroughly enjoyable action movie
I saw an early review of this movie before it's release and the person doing the critique said "January/February is where studios put movies that they are sending out to die. They are not award winners, and are not summer blockbusters".
I have to disagree wholeheartedly with that assessment. Sure it won't win awards, but if you are a fan of John Wick movies, or a fan of Jason Statham, you will enjoy this movie to the max. When it started, this movie could have gone a whole different directions. But the story is good, the action is exciting and inventive. Jason Statham is as always a bad ass. Josh Hutcherson plays someone you will love to hate. And Jeremy Irons, always love his movies.
65 (2023)
After Earth Meets Jurassic Park
This movie should have not been called 65. It literally should have been called "Ripoff", or "Cliche". So much of this movie has been done so often it was boring.
First you have the crashed ship where all the people in cryosleep, save one, die due to an accident that either destroys their part of the ship, or causes it to detach from the rest during the crash.
Then you have the "Hero" who speaks only English having to work with/save someone who doesn't so they can't communicate.
Then we have the trope of the child who is 9 yrs old, and smarter than the hero, better at things than the hero, blah blah bla.
Then you throw them into Jurassic Park where the little girl saves Adam Driver at least 3-4 times.
And all of this under the premise that they are on earth at the time of the asteroid that destroys the dinosaurs.
And like Jurassic Park, whether unwittingly or not, the T-Rex saves the day by righting the upside down ship, which allows it to take off and escape
All I can say is i'm glad i didn't pay money to see this.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
Not all that
I honestly could not tell what this movie was trying to be. And they shoved so much into it story wise, it was too much, and then to conclude on a cliffhanger?
To be totally honest, for the first 30 minutes for the Gwen part, I was bored. The animation was terrible, and was story just was bland.
Then the different worlds were literally like, pick an author, time period, or subject, and we'll make a world/universe out of it. Shakespeare world, Jurassic World, Cowboy word, and they all have a Spiderman.
Then there's the whole Canon thing. It was just too much.
Overall the animation was just too all over the place. The story was non-sensical in so many areas. I actually only became interested when he got to the "Spider HQ", and the chase. But got really quickly annoyed when he ends up in the wrong universe, and it ends on a cliffhanger. I really would rather have my 2 1/2 hrs back.
What We Do in the Shadows (2019)
Way better than the movie its based on
A few years ago, my wife wanted me to watch the movie starring Taika Watiti called What We do in the Shadows about 3 vampires living together in the same house. While there were some parts that were funny, overall, I was not a fan of the movie at all. Watched it twice, nope.
When the commercials for the Series came out, I was skeptical. But after watching the first episode, I was in love with this show. The characters are hilarious, the banter between them is funny, and the plots are hilarious. It has become a massive favorite of my wife and I. We have watched every episode almost 100 times each.
Justified (2010)
Can't believe I waited this long
I am a big fan of Timothy Olyphant. I loved in in Hitman. But I had never watched Justified until about 4 months ago. And I got interested in it after watching a Youtube clip from the show.
This show is amazing. Great Characters, great acting, and story lines that will take you by surprise. And scenes that you will not be expecting and be totally shocked, surprised and laugh out loud at. A great series about a man just trying to do the right thing which gets harder as the lines blur.
Prey (2022)
Boring and Predictable
So many people are saying this is a "return to greatness" for the franchise.
No. Not even close.
This was by far the most boring and predictable entry in the franchise. The female lead was uninteresting. The village had the stereotypical "Jerks" making fun of her wanting to be a hunter. She got her butt kicked by a Moutain lion, a Bear, and a bunch of French hunters, but was able to defeat a well-trained hunter from a deadly species? I can suspend belief, but this was ridiculous.
And the one attempt at nostalgia makes no sense. At the end, she supposedly gives the Chief the same gun as was given to Danny Glover in Predator 2. So how exactly did this gun get from the Chief, or the girl, BACK to the Predators because it is them that give it to Danny Glover? Massive plot hole.
By far, the best part of the movie was the dog.
Travelers (2016)
One of the best series out today
I just finished watching season 2 of this series. It is absolutely phenomenal.
I've been a fan of Eric McCormack in a few other series (Lonesome Dove, Perception), but his performance in this series is outstanding. The remaining cast of MacKenzie Porter, Nesta Cooper, Jared Abrahamson, and Reilly Dolman really round out the cast of Travelers.
I can't wait for Season three.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Never thought there could be a worse ST than Shatner's Opus (ST:V), but here it is
I have been a fan of Star Trek since the early 70's when I watched TOS as a young boy. And over the years & in all its incarnations, while I have disliked characters or stories from time to time, I have never had an overall dislike for any version of the property...Until now.
Star Trek:Discovery should be renamed Disappointment or Disaster. While most new shows take time to find their footing, or their history, Star Trek has a very rich history, over 700+ episodes, and 9 movies set in the Alpha Universe, not to mention other source materials, yet Discovery decided to say "Screw it, we'll do our own thing."
This series is reportedly takes place only 10 years before Kirk, Spock, & the original series crew. That being the case, How do they have technology that Kirk's crew never had? Yes, I know TOS was filmed in the late 60's and this series in 2017, but come on. And if this is supposed to take place in the Alpha universe, why does so much of the technology look like the Kelvin universe?
Issues with the technology variance:
- First issue, the first 5 min of the show, the Captain & first officer do what? VIOLATE THE PRIME DIRECTIVE. The race on the desert planet is facing a storm that will last 89 years. She mentions drilling accident. Why is Starfleet drilling on a planet they have no relations with the people, and almost destroy them? And without interference that wouldn't be needed if they hadn't been there ein the first place. (Oh, and don't get me started on how implausible it is to walk a perfect ST emblem in the sand, and it stay visible in a sand storm)
- The space suit Michael uses 16 minutes in. It is more like the Kelvin universe suit than either the TOS or Enterprise suit. Way more advanced than the TOS suit, so what happened later? And what happened to the 19 min time limit to lethal exposure. She was out there more than 20 min, but just 5 min in sickbay and she's fine. CRAP!!
- The whole "Michael in the brig" scene would never have happened. This type of Forcefield technology wasn't even available in TNG, over 120 years later.
- Shuttlecraft flying through a shield was not available till TNG. The original enterprise depressurized the deck. Why go back from this technology if not depressurizing was possible? WTH?
-Hologram Communications? The first hologram communication wasn't seen until DS9, and then they didn't look like a hologram, they looked like they were in the room.
- What's with this "Sideways" transporter? Enterprise had a straight up top to bottom Transporter which was supposedly 80 years before this.
- The crap with Sarek and Michael, and he "shared" his Katra with her, and can telepathically communicate over light-years distance?
- The bridge, on the bottom of the saucer? Come on.
And what is up with the Klingons? These don't look like people, even of another race. They look like they are wearing plastic helmets in the shape of the face. Nothing moves except slight movement in the cheeks when they talk. And T'Kouvma's voice? sounds like he could barely speak English, let alone Klingon. Its very unbelievable
As for the acting, I've been a fan of Michelle Yeoh for many years. But her performance in Discovery was flat and uninteresting. But as bad as hers was, it was nothing compared to the utmost horrible performance of Sonequa Martin-Green. Flat, dry, un-engaging,and just outright boring. And this is the performance they're hoping will sustain the series?
With bad performances I've seen so far, and the just total departure from Star Trek Lore & even science, this show is doomed to fail with Star Trek fans, which it needs to survive. Right now, Orville is much closer to Star Trek than this ever will be.
NCIS: New Orleans (2014)
Hoping it gets better
I am a big fan of N.C.I.S. Didn't get into it till the 4th season, but now have every season on DVD and watch them regularly as well as episodes that air on USA. I'm also an on/off again N.C.I.S. LA fan. When I heard about N.C.I.S. New Orleans, I had high expectations of the show.
I know series have to build characters and usually start weak, and I have hopes that as the series continues things will get better, but there are several things about this series that bother me, and are very distracting.
1st) Scott Bakula's accent. Granted, this is New Orleans, but there is no reason for him to have this accent. While it is not as thick as Lucas Black's, it is unnecessary. 2nd) Scott's character. He/his character is old enough that he should to some degree be like Gibbs. He's too congenial, and the constant cooking for his team is too much. 3rd) Lucas Black's accent. OMG this guys voice drives me crazy. His accent reminds me of a comment Jeff Foxworthy made in one of his bits. "people hear this accent they want to deduct 50 IQ points. This guy sounds like such a hick, I can't take him seriously. 4th) Granted, this is supposed to be different team and dynamic than the other two shows. The interactions during investigations seems about right but the off duty Creole cooking, drinking together, etc. seems over the top, and not the type of activity a leader of a team would do with his team. 5th) We get we are in New Orleans. Enough with the food, and forcing the culture down our throat.
I hope they improve, but so far the show has been mediocre to weak. Hope they figure this out quick.
Urban Tarzan (2013)
Oh My God!!!!!!!!!
I watched two episodes of this show tonight because my son and wife thought it was good. I watched this and was physically in pain trying to sit through 2 30 minute episodes.
They call this a reality show. Jerry Springer is more believable that this load of garbage, and we all know that Jerry is fake. The lion episode where they are moving on the lion and the cops come screaming in? Where the tiger escapes onto the golf course and SixFeet and Roid? If this was a real magic act, why do they not have a website? What true act in LA does not have a website? The most ridiculous was the rabid coyote that goes into the house through the doggies door, and they break in the house. The owner comes home freaking out. They try to explain they saved the pet, and are there with the neighbor, and the woman starts screaming at them.
Yes there are stupid people out there that are about as bright at the people on this show. But the acting in this show is so unbelievable, and being on SPIKE, they aren't much for intelligent TV.
Get Smart (2008)
86 and 99 are back
Whether you watched the show during its original run, caught it in reruns over the years like I did, or you are a very recent fan of the series like my 9 year old son who watches all the seasons and original movies repeatedly, you will laugh hysterically at this movie. Just about every agent and character from the original series is here, from Agent 13 who gets stuffed in the oddest places to Fang, Max's dog from season one. The dialog, the gags, and the characters are pure Get Smart. I do not believe anyone could have come into Don Adams shoe phone better than Steve Carell. He perfectly carries off the almost debonair, yet not as clever as he thinks he is Agent 86. Anne Hathaway (who looks breathtaking in black leather) was awesome as Agent 99, completely playing the seasoned agent to Max's bumbling. Alan Arkin, Dwayne Johnson, and Terrance Stamp round out a great cast. I just hope though in the next movie we see more Hymie, one of my all time favorite characters. My family and I have been waiting over a year since the first trailer was shown for this movie, and it was well worth the wait. We will be seeing it many times over.
