Django (2022)
Pretentious
Not sure reviews focusing on the mishmash of accents really the point as I imagine accents would have been mongrel mix of immigrant ones back then. Not sure personal comments re Noomi Rapace were necessary either. I was unaware of previous versions so had no expectations but after 2 episodes felt this was trying too hard to have gravitas. The acting stilted with lots of pregnant pauses, knowing stares and as ever liberal use of flashbacks with most of the action in darkness presumably to avoid continuity issues and the need to dress sets.
So it passes the time while playing video games, as a bit too tedious to give full attention to. Hardly the searing new drama the ads proclaim.
Alan Partridge Live: Stratagem (2022)
Audience exploitation- just a wage for Coogan
Couldn't have been more bored if I tried - no idea what prompted audience laughter certainly not the content on stage. A very cheap money spinner for Coogan with no merit at all. Tedious slide shows, phone calls picking on ghdd Ed audience, and dance routines - a real mishmash with no theme or narrative thread. While one understands it is supposed to be a parody of a dim and socially unaware character it is just not funny. Rather like someone making an unpleasant remark and claiming " I was only joking " this show was a weak and cynical excuse simply to provide a paycheck for Coogan. Do not waste your time.
Dark (2017)
Someone has to point out the Emperor is naked
I have no idea why there are so many 10/10 reviews. Did no one listen to the script, suffer the ponderous direction or the cheap repetition. Of course time travel, an easy plot device, lends itself to repetition but the endless thousand mile stares and meaningless aphorisms backed by portentous soundtrack, the constantly repeated - everything must be played out exactly as it was to end the cycle - life is a labyrinth - you have to trust me - I have to tell you something - were beyond tedious. I persevered for the 3 series hoping it would resolve but after the first few episodes of series 1 and the last of the third the rest was pretentious padding. Casting of the lookalikes was excellent and of course the script may have lost some nuance in translation but please let's have some sensible reviews not just fandom.
The Responder (2022)
More Police Academy than gritty drama
Freeman has only one method pause turn head gurn pause then say line. No wonder Ian McKellen didn't rate him in LofR No idea why he is raved over. But worse still The story is farcical as though it was a spoof with the writers thinking what else can we add for s laugh let's make his partner tortured by her boyfriend. Watched the last couple of episodes on fast forward as didn't want to waste any more time. 5 episodes 4 too many.
Wolfe (2021)
Lamentable
This is the first time I have been moved to comment but this was dire. The writing and acting woeful and the suspension of disbelief required to believe the protagonist is a charismatic professor too much. The scenes around the mortuary and crime scenes are just ridiculous. I was really disappointed after all the hype but will not waste any more time.
