Baldur's Gate III (2023)
a new benchmark in gaming
BG1 and BG2 are some of my favourite games. I wasn't entirely sure if BG3 would live up to the series but having just finished the game I can say that the game definitely delivered. The bar has definitely been raised and people will compare future RPG games (and games in general) to BG3 for years to come.
The game has plenty of content and it will take an average player hundreds of hours to comb through all of the content. Player choice is robust and seem to have meaningful impact to the overall storyline. Combat is robust, dialogue options are fleshed out and the overall world-building was faithful enough to the source material.
Far Cry 6 (2021)
middling, don't buy at full price
I got the game on sale for twenty dollars. Finished the game at about 34 hours. Overall a competent game but it's middling and soulless. Flat and repetitive gameplay and plot. Very little endgame payoff. Very meh ending. The environment looks quite nice but the world is barely interact-able. It has all sorts of base-building and RPG elements but none of them seemed to really matter at all.
On sale, I think there is enough content there to keep you occupied for some time. Only buy it when it's on discount and don't expect to be blown away. I would have been angry had I bought this game at full price.
The Green Knight (2021)
visually well-executed
I recommend this movie. It's a mature and stylistic take on an old fable that does a lot of things right and will likely age well. It's clearly not to the taste of modern movie audiences (who like their movies to be delivered more literally) but I can easily see this movie developing a cult following and gaining support.
