Magnolia (1999)
Excellent
Magnolia really does rate up there with the best 100 films of all time. Beautifully filmed, acted, and scripted, this is a gem.
Although for some viewers it may seem "boring", if you really take the time out to sit down and watch this as a piece of art, instead of a "quick fix short film" (go watch a comedy instead!), you will appreciate it for what it's worth.
It's just such a shame comments like those of megaman821 are found on this comments database:
"This is one of those movies that people say they like just to look smart, like they can see something deep and wonderful in everything. Thats a load of cr@p."
It truly shows you what kind of people do NOT like this movie. People that can't even piece together a basic little review. Shame on all of you. Excellent film, rent it now. Better still, buy it now!
Zoolander (2001)
Stupid funny is what it is...
Definitely do not go to see this film if you don't like so-called "dumb movies". Although even for these people it has it moments, you most likely will not enjoy it.
If you're looking for a really funny film, to watch and unwind to, definitely watch it. The jokes are brilliant, even though it does slow down in a few parts, but overall the pace is good.
Ben Stiller *is* Zoolander.
The Thirteenth Floor (1999)
Well worth watching
Though it may not be the best, or as good as The Matrix was in delving into this subject, the film is well worth watching. Though it starts off slow, and may get a little tedious in parts, the second half really picks up, and works pretty well. A big messy, and the acting could have been better, but an interesting idea.
Antz (1998)
Kids film, definitely
Although the animation in the film is great (though now surpassed by films like Shrek and Final Fantasy), it will not hold up all the way through, if you are over 12. It's worth watching for a while as it is very well done, but the plot and jokes run a little thin. Great film to rent for the kids, or maybe watch it if it's on TV anyway just for the cast/voice actors (including Sharon Stone, Woody Allen, Sly Stallone).
The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996)
Hmm
Good. If not just for Janeane Garofalo's performance in the film. Drags on in most parts, and it's a little sappy and contrived. A little too "things do end up right in the end" for me. Would have preferred it if the ending was a little more realistic. Still, it's a comedy... Enjoyable nonetheless.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Stunning
This was absolutely one of the best films of the year. Many compared it (before it's release) to Harry Potter, which does not do it justice in the least. Harry Potter is a kids film, it will be forgotten in a years time. The Fellowship of the Ring will live on in our memories for a good long time still.
It should be up in the list along with the likes of Star Wars, the acting was brilliant, the visual effects stunning, and the story a timeless classic. It has done the book justice and I am very glad to see Peter Jackson taking up this task. No Hollywood director could have pulled it off this well. I shudder at the thought of Steven Spielberg, Roland Emmerich or Joel Schumacher would have done to it. Well done Jackson, it really shines through that you are a big Tolkien fan, and you have inspired many to finally pick up the novels and read them for themselves. Well done.
