Doctor Who: The Devil's Chord (2024)
'The Devil's Chord' strikes flat
Pretty horrible episode overall. I can't remember the last time I was this surprised by the lack of quality of Doctor Who in a long, long time. Even Chibnall's era was better than this. There's many reviews that talk about their budget skyrocketing because Disney has signed on and I suspect that might've been a good reason as to the plummeting quality.
In addition, they ran the mannerisms of the antagonist into the ground. It felt so forced and overdone that it robbed any essence of natural fun to be had out of existence.
I'm really hoping the next few episodes will be better as 'Space Babies' and this were both massive wastes of time.
Overall, this episode has been a stellar low point for the series in a way that shocked me. The absolute lack of honoring their own rules, breaking them in the same episodes, not to mention how horrid they make the value of 'music' into a weapon. (Seriously, floating notes? What is this? Amateur hour?)
It's all enough to make me seriously want to stop watching, but I felt the same way during Chibnall's first season (although not to this point. It didn't actively push me away, was just boring) so I will carry on and hope for the best.
Hopefully RTD can come back to his roots and remember what make his seasons some of the greatest writing DW had. He really needs to step away and get some perspective.
The Amazing Digital Circus (2023)
Terrible. Absurdist Gen Z humor
I wouldn't waste your time on this. It's absurdist humor that you typically find gen z people doing online nowadays. I could barely sit through the entire thing. Chuckled at a couple of the jokes but by and large it's a combination of shock, absurdist humor and dark themes. The art style is horrid to look at and is overall just not worth anyone's time.
In addition, I suspect that the fanbase will be to blame for a large portion of the population disliking this show. I've already seen that dumb clown posted everywhere online. It was finally the reason why I bothered to give the show a shot but I got what I expected I suppose.
There are better shows out there to spend your time on.
On My Block (2018)
Terrible. Teenage Angst/Highschool Drama story
Pretty standard, run-of-the-mill teenage drama/high school angst in a gang filled neighborhood. There's shows that have done it far better and with far less cringe. If you are turned away by simplistic plot points, teenage romances, horny high schoolers, bad acting, characters that are hard to care about or anything else that comes from the CW (y'know, all those teenage angst shows that erupted from 'Arrow'.) then stay the hell away from this show.
The only character that isn't constantly cringe is the grandmother. She's the most down to earth character and is rather enjoyable but not enough to save this travesty of a show.
It's horrid.
Misfits (2009)
Worst show I've seen in a long while
Just horrible. Outright horrible. I do NOT get why this show gets such rave reviews. It's been on my watch list for a while now and I finally got into it.
What I found was a bunch of incredibly stupid teens who have sex more than think. They have wonderous powers but don't ever use them in ways that would make sense. They constantly screw up but the world around them never seems to catch up.
There's multiple episodes in which I found myself asking one of three questions:
Why aren't the police doing anything about what is going on in the series? (i.e. People getting shot, ran over, exploded, etc.)
Why don't the characters have the most basic shred of common sense? They constantly make decisions that are idiotic, at best, and at worst, actively sabotage themselves. Even for teenagers, they're surprisingly stupid.
Lastly but not least: Why the hell is there SO much sex in the show? I don't mind sex in a show, but the vast majority of scenes don't add anything to the experience. They don't add to the story. They don't do anything other than inject baseline hardcore porn into an otherwise mediocre show.
Stay away from this one. There are MUCH better 'superpower' shows out there. MUCH better.
Community: Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (2011)
Good Job Netflix
This is by far one of the best episodes of this series. It not only is a self-contained episode that anyone could watch by itself, but it has a great morale and all the characters exemplify themselves to a wonderful extent.
Apparently Netflix, in their infintie wisdom of pandering to the whiniest majority decided to remove this episode due to the character Chang who is cosplaying as a DROW. Drow do not look like any species/race of human. Their skin is almost lumiscent with a sheen unlike any normal person would have.
The ultimate irony here though? There's another episode 'Physical Education' (S01E17) in which Abed is in WHITEFACE. This isn't a matter where the character is cosplaying a fictional race. No, Abed is straight up portraying the role of as the credits call him "White Abed".
How is this acceptable? Why is this not seen as a massive double standard? Specially considering Chang is NOT in blackface.
Star Trek: Voyager: Nemesis (1997)
Thinly Veiled Propaganda . . . against propaganda
All in all, this episode was a painful one and so far the only episode of Voyager I've come to review/write about due to my experience. There are some fantastic episodes in all the seasons and I was looking forward to this season's episodes after the stellar beginnings however this one left me with a sour taste in my mouth.
It effectively uses pseudoscience and leaps of faith on the audience's part in order to skip many unanswered questions. The episode's moral is simple: Hate is taught, not something you're born with.
However, the way that it is taught to the characters in this episode are vague and confusing. They attempt to tell you with simple, very idiotic explanations as to how this is achieved however what you EXPERIENCE and what they said happen don't seem to match.
In the end, I understand what they were driving at here however just because it's science FICTION doesn't mean you can have swiss-cheese plot lines and holes in your concept wide enough to drive trucks through.
The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
Wow
This is the first 10/10 I've given a movie and I'd give it to the trilogy as well. This is a must see for anyone. It is by far the best trilogy of any movie I have seen in my lifetime, and that includes Star Wars, LoTR, and many other series that blew me out of the water.
The ending was nothing like I expected, and I expected quite a few to be honest. The lines are perfect, the action is always there and it keeps you (LITERALLY) on the edge of your seat.
I had the misfortune to watch this movie at 3 in the morning.
I am a sound sleeper as well.
I could not sleep at all that night. I was full of adrenaline for the entire night and hair on end over the series.
Idiocracy (2006)
Spot on premise, poor delivery.
Don't get me wrong, it was a decent movie overall. But the big selling point in my opinion was the premise of the movie. It's near terrifying to see in the opening minutes of the movie are dead on, saying that our future is deemed stupid and ignorant because of the fact that Darwin's principle law is found to be ineffective under the conditions for the human race. The narrator sums it up nicely. So the movie should be suggested for the premise, not for the actual movie because it was not the greatest I've seen. Not horrible though.
The problem was that it seems the movie had no work done on it after FOX gave it the heave-ho and thusly it came out as more of an independent work: Good idea, horrible plot line. Luke Wilson plays a decent character, although he sells it short in many ways. The other supporting characters are no one that anyone has heard of, but they play their separate parts with their own kind of grace, though that's not the word that would be best for these roles.
In the end, I'd recommend this movie to shock people into thinking differently for our futures, rather than for a laugh. There are better ways to garner a laugh from a movie.
