Silent Hill (2006)
It's actually pretty good
I guess this is the best video game adaptation I have seen. And not just that, it's a good, scary movie.
Silent Hill, the game was about atmosphere, combining settings and music to keep you guessing where the "boooo" was going to come from. And the movie delivers. Fog, ash, sounds, the changes between the two worlds are all faithful to the game, and , coupled with the monsters from the game ( Pyramid Head just rules), will make the Silent Hill fan very happy.
What about the rest of the movie-goers? I guess it should keep them entertained, because it doesn't require playing the games to understand the plot, it keeps you guessing and for the gore fan, we have that too. The movie, like the game, will suck you in, and scare you.
There are two things I'm not too sure about. One is the ending, which is a nice twist from the general happy-ending, but it really doesn't work for me. The child, Sharon, returns with her Mom, but also merges with Alessa, anguish, vengeance, trauma incarnate, and stays the same? The other one is the acting, which is above average on the whole, but Sean Bean deserved a greater part, Holden was pretty awful, and Radha Mitchell wasn't stellar. Jodelle Ferland and Alex Kirge were pretty good though.
Oh, I forgot, good old fashioned stupidity in one scene: Laurie Holden's character is facing a few cultists, she has a gun on them, and then puts it down and fights them hand to hand. Who the hell does she think she is, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan? On the whole, a good effort though. 8/10
I Am Legend (2007)
Things I liked, things I hated
OK, eagerly anticipated film, lets see what you got.
Things I liked: -the fx, really staggering -the setting, deserted New York was just mind-blowing -Will Smith does one of his best performances to date. I think you really should see the film just because of him
Things I hated: -the infected aren't as scary as they should be -some scientific inaccuracies : measles is not a retrovirus -the ending in the original and source material is a lot better -the alternate ending, Neville lives, seems catered to teenage girls who hated that Will Smith had to die.
In all, 7/10. My recommendation, see it. It is a good effort. But 28 Days Later is a lot better
Star Trek: Voyager (1995)
A train wreck
I'm sorry to say Voyager was a very poor effort. It certainly had the right premise: a Federation starship stranded, no way home, a crew at odds. Very well. And then it all went downhill.
Firstly, they did not keep to the plot, or the premise. In the end, it was TNG in the Delta Quadrant, nothing else.
Secondly, this tries to mash TNG and TOS together and just ends up being ridiculous. So, lets see: The doctor could just be a hologram of McCoy, Janeway is Picard with breasts, Tuvok is Spocks retarded brother, B'Elana is a spoiled, conflicted version of a mash-up between Worf and Scotty, Harry Kim is Hikaru Sulu, Chakotay is even more useless than Riker.
Thirdly, the writing was horrible. The treknobable was even worse than TNG.
Well, maybe it does have some redeeming features. The Borg as the main villain saved the show, Seven of Nine, and of course, barring Enterprise, this trek is the best looking trek.
In all, a 6/10.
AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007)
The first one was a lot better
And that says a lot because the first one was bad. But this one is worse. There is no character development, the acting is horrible, direction and choreography of the fights is a lot worse than the first one. Oh, and plot holes. Lots of them.
You want my advice, don't go see it. It is an insult to the two franchises. AvP should have been Freddy vs Jason, Superman vs Batman. But it is not. And I hope that if they change the guys who made the film, we should finally have a real AvP movie.
If you really want to see it, download it, don't pay a theatre entry or the price of a DVD
War of the Worlds (2005)
Things I liked, things I hated
OK, let's just jump in.
Things I liked:
- CGI was great. And that's about it really.
Things I hated:
-Acting was just plain awful. You would have expected more from Tim Robbins and Dakota Fanning. But nothing. It was just screaming and wooden acting.
-The story is ridiculous. Did retards do the screenplay? I swear, it is just cheesy, from start to finish, they don't keep track of the plot, they set up ridiculous scenes. Coupled with the acting, this is horrible.
-Tom Cruise. OK, I just hate him, but here he was just bad. Anhd he was the leading man. And I guess that really killed this movie, which I guess a lot of people wanted to see because of the Cruise-Spielberg pairing.
-The ending. first the movie had no pace. It just ran for the first 20 min, and then it just ran out of steam. Then it died, in the most ridiculous ending I ever saw in a movie. What kills the Martians? Bacteria. Yes, they get sick when they get to Earth. Are they serious? A race of advanced aliens couldn't find a way to inoculate themselves from native bacteria. Again, screenplay written by retards,or people with the IQ of a thawed pea. Conclusion: I expected more from Spielberg. The guy who brought us Schindler's List, Jurrassic Parc and Minority Report(which wasn't all that great, but a good effort) should have done a lot better than this. So, don't watch it. It is awful. I guess the guy who came up with Xenu must have written the screenplay. At any rate, I gave it a 3 because of the CGI, nothing else.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993)
I don't really care who gets upset about this : DS9 is the best star trek
OK, I'm a huge Star Trek fan, and I loved TNG. But DS9 is hands on the best. I was sick of the wooden, 2d characters in the original and tng that were just in awe of the captain, sick of Picard's let's talk when people are shooting at me, sick of the lack of action and the human centered crews.I got everything I wanted in DS9.
First, the characters. They are all well written, developed, and wonderfully dark. Everyone either has a secret or does something wrong, nobody is perfect. And the children aren't annoying, Nog or Jake never made me want to bust the TV the way Wesley did. Of course, the captain was important, and Avery Brooks does a good job, even if he over-acts, much in the way Shatner did. My personal favorite: Garak, the Obsidian Order Cardassian, exiled on the station, full of secrets, hidden talents and charm. His lines are always good, sometimes brilliant, and funny when they have to. Let's not forget the villain, Dukat, by far the best villain on Star Trek.
Next, the setting. To me, a starship exploring was a way to get a good series without having to develop characters. You don't change characters, you just change scenery. LAzy. A STATION will force you too get creative to advance a show and keep people watching.
The aliens have a bigger role in this. TNG didn't feature so many aliens, it was very human centered. Troi was basically human, and Data wanted to be. But ds9has truly memorable characters, from Garak and Dukat to Quark and Odo, to the Jem'hadars Ikat'ika and Remata'Klan and Weyoun the Vorta. And there is no message humans are special, frankly, they are not the smartest, fastest or strongest in the galaxy, and they have a dark side to them :"let me tell you about hew-moons...". And Worf is in DS9 the meanest person in the Alpha Quadrant, not the voice of a more aggressive stance in TNG.
Finally, this is a show with real action. Space battles, a huge war, explosions, people die, star ships are ripped to shreds, and the Defiant, the meanest ship in the galaxy. OK, sounds like Babylon 5, and I guess it is, but that is what makes it great. No shame in emulating a great show.
In essence, it i the only Star Trek to work without Roddenberry because it is nothing like Roddenberry. I think he would have frowned at this idea, because he had a vision of a happy-go-lucky show, squeaky clean characters and the like. Nothing wrong with that, but he made it work, and honest to God Enterprise seasons 1 and2 and that train wreck Voyager proved that it wouldn't work. DS9 was different and brilliant, better because it finally had the guts to change the perspective on a great universe. It kept the franchise alive, allowed voyager to exist, enterprise and two Tng films to be made. Now if they want to revive this franchise, they should take it in a different direction, just like ds9 did.
Battlefield Earth (2000)
Bleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
My reviews usually have two parts, things I liked, things I hated. Okay, this is special, so i will use a new format. Here it is. Things I hated: -no plot -no brains behind the directing -a total ripoff, aliens look like klingons -editing was crap -alien writing is from predator -everything is cheesy -they use plot devices that are just plain ridiculous Things that made me puke my guts out: -it's a L ron hubbard novel, so there goes my breakfast -clichees, lots of them, full of them, my lunch is just on my carpet -special effects no comment, my dinner just flew out my mouth -a harrier works after a thousand years, are you kidding me my pancreas I just puked it out -the acting, My liver is staring at my from the sink -and travolta all the insides I had left just began moving up my through, screaming: You brain-dead idiot and came out my mouth and ran in every direction So, to avoid such a traumatic experience, please burn all copies of this movie, for our children's sake.
The Punisher (2004)
Things I liked, things I hated about it
OK, lets get started: Things I liked: -Thomas Jane gives a good all round performance on this one, his best I think.Kinda like Christofer Lambert in the first Immortal movie. -It's a nice throwback to the action movies of the '70's,with lots of action, blood and bullets flying everywhere. -it stays faithful to the comics in atmosphere, it is dark, like the source material, something different from the family friendly spandex superheroes. Those who said it was too dark:watch Winnie the Pooh and shut up, it was just like it was suppose to be. A big thumbs up on this one. -Rebbeca Romjin gives a good performance, as does the whole cast. Good work from the casting director. Things I hated: Not many, just one actually: -The dialog wasn't that well written, it does have it's good lines, but some are just corny All in all, it is one of the best comic book adaptations you will find out there, so if you're sick of classic superhero types, like Superman or Spiderman, watch The Punisher. You'll love it
