The Movies That Made Us: Die Hard (2019)
A fine making-of doc
I have only seen the diehard episode so far and I thought it was great. Seems like what other reviewer's are negatively saying about this series is what I like about it. The narration. I think he does a good job of making what could otherwise just be a boring documentary very fun. This one had lots of humor in it and I'm looking forward to seeing if the other episodes in the series do the same.
Cirque du Soleil: Solstrom (2003)
Fantastical and fantastic!
This is art. This is entertainment. This is quality television. This show's page here on IMDb does not show any nominations or awards, but I imagine it must've won something. The show is too good not to. So far the only place I have found this is on YouTube. It is mind boggling to think of all the hard work that went into this series. Appreciate it and love it as I did.
The Great: Meatballs at the Dacha (2020)
Best episode of the season for me
Aside from the laugh out loud moments, we get two heartfelt performances from Elle Fanning and Phoebe Fox. I can think of few shows that combine humor and gut wrenching moments so wonderfully. And for that reason, some people just don't get this show.
Watch this episode. Listen to the song as the end credits roll. And tell me there is a better 50 minutes of television in this crazy 2020 of ours.
The Fighter (2010)
This movie will give you a headache
Not enough boxing and too much Melissa Leo. Can we be done with her now? Anytime there is a role that requires a so-called strong woman, we end up getting a shouting Melissa Leo. Her Massachusetts accent is something you will be wishing to unhear. And, folks... I'M FROM MASSACHUSETTS! So for all you actresses out there who are hoping to win an Oscar, just be an annoying loudmouth and your dream will come true.
If you still feel the need to watch this movie just make sure to take some aspirin prior to viewing.
Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010)
Watching it a second time!
It's so good I'm watching it all over again. 10 years later it's still holds up. Amid all the glorious violence I had forgotten just how surprisingly emotional this series was.
If you have not seen it, watch it!
For fans of Gladiator, Xena, Hercules, and works by Sam Raimi. You need not have seen the original 1960 film Spartacus to enjoy the series as they are not related.
Warning - every episode contains nudity and explicit sex scenes. You have been warned.
And don't forget to watch the 6 episodes of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, which aired between seasons one and two, but could be watched after this series. This was basically a holdover for the fans while it was hoped for and assumed by everyone involved that Andy Whitfield's return would be eminent.
Sadly, Andy Whitfield was taken from us a year and a half after the final episode aired. If you like Andy and enjoyed his performance make sure to check out the documentary Be Here Now. RIP Andy Whitfield.
Hanna: Safe (2020)
Season two off to a good start
Season two off to a good start despite last minute script rewrites evidenced by some obvious ADR. I felt season one had a good mix of action and drama, suspense and character development. Hope season two builds on this and doesn't fall prey to the sophomore slump.
The Great (2020)
Fabulous!
Discovering this show has been a joy. It combines two of my loves: Period pieces and dark comedies. Everyone involved has done a marvelous job. Sets, the costumes, the cast, production... all top notch. I am thoroughly enjoying it, right down to the song selections that play during the end credits. I'm so sad that all 10 episodes have gone by so quickly. I don't know if there will be more. I hope so. Love it!
-Update 7/3/20- Hulu has renewed it for a second season! Yay!!!
Princess Diana: Where Now? A Woman Alone (1996)
Shameful propaganda 😠
Released a year before her death, this documentary seems to ridicule Diana in a way that is disgusting to me. The paparazzi giving interviews in this documentary accuse her of manipulating the media for her own selfish ends. Ridiculous!!
How foolish and ashamed they must have felt less than a year later when they themselves would be responsible for ending the life of this amazing human being.
It's a good documentary of the time from her divorce up until just before her death. Just be prepared to be out raged while watching it.
The Tudors: Something for You (2010)
Beautifully shot, written, acted, and directed.
It's been five years now since this show bid us farewell and it still finds ways to move me.
I've as of yet not grown tired of re-watching this wonderful, thought provoking series and feel I shall never do.
I just finished this episode and *SAD SPOILER* the scene with Henry and his son had never effected me this way, but I was moved to tears when the young prince shared a delicate moment with his father the king. He will never know his mother. Henry weeps as his precious son shows him the locket with his mothers angelic face within.
There were so many tender moments between all of the characters that we have grown to love, even the ones we might despise. Brilliant!
The performances, costumes, and score were all on full display here in one of the series' finest episodes.
