This one changed me...
I did not have high expectations for this movie but I really enjoyed it and actually cried at the end... And more importantly, I have thought about the movie each day since I saw it. I have 4 kids and after watching this movie, I realized that you don't need a magic remote to 'fast forward' thru your life.
We do it each day - when we put off the kids to watch t.v. or dread the family reunion because we could be doing better things... when we choose to sit at the computer instead of playing that game of monopoly or we let the kids 'do their own thing' when, in fact, we are only letting them because they are leaving us alone :) I saw this from a totally "parental" perspective and that is how I interpreted it... it was sad and I can honestly say that this movie sort of changed me a bit. Yeah, we all need peace and quiet away from kids, spouse & family but life goes by amazingly fast and before you know it, the kids are driving, old friends are retiring and parents or family members are gone forever. And all you are left with are pictures and good memories, if you are lucky, or that dull ache in your gut if you're not. Pain because of all the time you could have spent or letters you could have written or games you could have played.
It's not often you find a movie that really makes you take a closer look at your life, let alone want to change it.
Cold Case (2003)
Best Show on T.V.
I didn't get into Cold Case until half way through the first season but I LOVE it! It has quickly become my first choice when I turn on the TiVo - surpassing all the Law & Orders and Without a Trace..... I found the use of music to bring you back to whatever era the crime was committed to be terribly effective and the last few minutes of each episode are haunting.
My favorite "effect" ( not sure what to call it ) is when they are talking to a family member or suspect currently but briefly flash to what they looked like at the time of the crime - it helps to keep track of all the characters. Lily Rush's acting is, at times, stiff but improves as the series progresses - almost as if she is getting more comfortable with herself......
The episode "Fly Away" was the best. The first scene is a mother and 7 year old daughter crashing thru a high window and landing on the sidewalk - it was so scary and haunting that I couldn't watch it a second time around and I kept thinking about it for days later. ( I do that often with this show - how many times does that happen watching TV these days? )
In short, I think this series is excellent and will continue to watch avidly :)
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
Surprisingly good...... it makes you think.
This movie haunted me for days after watching it... I will not give away anything but just think about changing certain things in your life and how they would have a ripple effect on everything..... perhaps you decided to go on a vacation or pick up a hitchiker or what if your parents had stayed together? How would these things change the outcome of your life? The type of person you ended up becoming... would you have gone a different way, chosen a different path or career and what about the people you would or wouldn't meet because of this change?
This movie gets me thinking how one completely unrelated thing could affect others and how anyone could go good or bad depending on circumstances.
And Ashton did a good job - pick him apart all you want, I have seen big name actors do worse than he did. I was very impressed. Definitely worth seeing more than once since it is one of those movies that you will notice new things each time you see it.
