Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
Strange Accolades
It's bizarre that this is getting so much critical acclaim. Zero character interest and a tissue paper thin AI villain concept. Dialogue is basically wall to wall corn worthy of Tommy Wiseau. Example: One character is baffled at TC suggesting he would risk his life on her behalf and offer her a permanent spot on his clandestine team, where trust is presumably critical. Her distrust is quite reasonable, one would think, as the two have only crossed paths briefly twice up to that point. "You don't even know me," she says. "What difference," TC replies, in deadly earnest, "does that make?" Well, a pretty big one, Tom! Awful except for the stunts that weren't green screened. Tom looks way too old for special ops. The guy can still sprint, though. Good for him.
Star Trek: Voyager: The Q and the Grey (1996)
Q sucks.
Q is the worst. Q stories are the worst. Q shouldn't exist. Q is bad writing. Q sucks.
Star Trek: Voyager: Resistance (1995)
The first truly transcendent episode of Voyager
Of all the episodes prior to this one in the first two seasons, this is the closest to classic Star Wars that Voyager comes in visual style, story elements, and emotional heft. The guest performance by Joel Grey as the broken and deluded Caylem is an unforgettable gem, and Kate rises expertly to the occasion presented by the script and Grey's beautiful work. In fact, the entire cast elevates their game; Tim Russ and Roxann Dawson share an excellent scene as prisoners, and Robert Beltran steps gamely into the captain's chair aboard Voyager. Alan Scarfe is also excellent in his guest role as Augris, the Mokra bossman. (Neelix, the Doctor, and Kes are all gratefully set aside for an episode.) Winriche Kolbe's direction is superbly cinematic. It's a beauty of an episode and for me a perfect 10/10, even though it contains none of the philosophy 101 fun of so many other episodes. It's a simple tale that feels like it takes place a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away.
