Catwoman: Hunted (2022)
Great Music and Animation, but that's it
The writing felt all over the place, lacks any twists or turns and just plays out in a very generic and formulaic way. No character arcs or anything of the sort to be found here, which is disappointing.
When I heard Yutaka Yamada was composing the score for this, I was really expecting this movie to go all in on a thrilling and unpredictable heist story along the lines of Great Pretender (which Yamada also did the score for) so this being the end result ended up being very disappointing for me.
High Guardian Spice (2021)
Bland, but has room to grow
Controversies aside, the series isn't particularly impressive, but shows potential if given room to grow
The characters are pretty generic, nothing particularly special or unique.
The animation isn't that bad. While I'm not a big fan of the artstyle it doesn't feel like an attack on my senses, and there are some instances where the animation actually feels well done.
The script feels like it was written by an AI that was forced to watch Little Witch Academia, She-Ra and The Owl House, but lacks any of their charm or emotional backbone.
One of my biggest issues I have with the series personally is the tonal whiplash. Despite it's cute exterior, the series has a surprising amount of swearing and bloody violence, much of which feels gratuitous. On top of that the series really drags its feet until the second half, and even then the series can't seem to decide if it wants to be a mature epic or a cutesy adventure.
In conclusion:
Does the series deserve all the hate? No, and I'm willing to bet most of the people here haven't seen the series at all.
Should it get a second season? Depends on whether or not the writers can decide what the series should be, and if they can sharpen up the scripts.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021)
False Advertising, blown out of proportion
First off, I'm gonna go ahead and say that the trailers and Kevin Smith's PR were not at all what the series presents in it's entirety, and that is something that shouldn't be overlooked.
The animation is pretty solid, but it's Powerhouse so we already knew it was gonna be good. As for the story, some decisions made might not have been the best, but I wouldn't go as far as to call it bad. Here's to hoping Part 2 corrects some of the transgressions of what we have been shown.
Batwoman (2019)
Wasted Potential, no Subtlety, but not a total loss
Before I begin I would like to say that many of the reviews I have seen can be somewhat harsh, but that isn't to say that I disagree with what many users are saying.
I believe Batwoman has the potential to be good. I have been disappointed by the series thus far as it attempts to use LGBT representation and it's Empowerment message as a supplement for actual character depth and plot, and lacks any nuance to say otherwise. I believe that representation is very important in modern media, and that when done properly has a level of nuance and subtlety to it where fans notice it, but it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. I also believe that Female Empowerment is a message that should be
presented, but once agaim with a level of nuance where the audience figures it out for themselves instead of treating its audience like children. I've seen kids shows with better representation and female empowerment messages that come off with more nuance while still getting the point across, so I know it can be done with the proper care.
After watching the series from the beginning up until now, or more particularly after the Crisis crossover, I believe I have seen a shift in the series, it's starting to present more proper character development and plot.
Batwoman had a terrible start, but I think that with more fine-tuned writing, the series can strike a balance between it's LGBT representation and a proper narrative. I hope that the writers and producers behind Batwoman can correct their course before the show ends up off air.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018)
Not Your Parents' She-Ra
I'd been hesitant about writing a review for this show but with the 4th season under my belt I think I've finally got it.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is a bold reboot of the 1980s cartoon.
The plot takes some time to kick into high gear, but when it does it is more than enough to carry the story on its own. However the show's best aspect is the characters. Both the heroes and villains are diverse in background, and complex in character and it's amazing to see.
The animation serves it's purpose well, nothing amazing but not bad by any means.
In summary this show is way better than it has any right to be, and a more than worthy successor to the original cartoon
Canal Street (2018)
Not Good
Canal Street is not a very good movie. The narrative is incoherent due to countless plot holes to maie the story even possible. The radio segments bring very little to an already exhausted film. The ending feels rushed to the point it's confusing. The cinematography throughout feels awkward, and it feels more like a straight-to-video film versus a theatrical release.
