Last of the Summer Wine (1973)
Abysmal
This is awful awful awful. It was just some northerners sliding down a hill on a tea tray. This was horrific on a Sunday night - what a way to ruin the end of the week. Miserable theme tune, terrible jokes (where there any?) and awful "Nora Batty". I'm struggling to explain how much I hated this programme, it crushed my very soul. Again, 4 channels made for some appalling television. How this ran for so many episodes is beyond me. Anyway, I have to fill up the rest of the review. Miserable. Terrible. One of the worst programmes ever made. It was a truly depressing programme, but at least it wasn't Lovejoy.
The Darling Buds of May (1991)
Awful
This was awful. The misery of this on a Sunday evening still haunts me to this day. Utter misery. I cannot believe that anyone ever wanted to watch this. Presumably it was only watched because there was a miserable four channels so there was nothing else to watch. "Gentle" comedy it was not. It was just Derek Jason going "perfick" and then worrying about a cow. Hopefully this will never grace the TV schedules again, although apparently it was redone as "The Larkins" for which the mind boggles. Please no, no more stuff like this. British TV at its worst. There was no "golden age" of British TV in the 90s.
Make It at Market (2023)
Hilariously brilliant
We love this show. It is absolutely hilarious. Most people take about 5 hours to make something that could be made in a factory for much less, so nobody will want to pay that (£15 for a spoon anyone). That maybe isn't the spirit of the programme but I do wonder how anybody makes any money is beyond me. Perfect relaxing programme - perfect to wind down at the end of the day. It is very formulaic, which is what makes it very soothing. Some of the things they make are quite interesting, but the usual joy is the "how much" element of the programme. Thoroughly recommended - almost nothing happens!!!
Infinite (2021)
Definitely entertaining - just leave your brain behind
This movie obviously has a ludicrous premise that people can get re-incarnated. So if you just accept that it's for a few logical holes then you'll get on fine. Decent action scenes with explosions (how I personally rate action films) galore.
It's totally enjoyable hokum, and I don't really understand the bad reviews. It doesn't have a particularly cerebral central premise but don't let that bother you.
It's perfectly entertaining nonsense, so give it a go. It deserves much more than its 5.5 rating. I've seen much worse films with higher ratings.
I don't understand people who complain and plot and characterisation in action films - are you really there for that?
Bullet Train (2022)
Wow. Don't waste two hours of your life like I did
Now I like dumb action movies. I'm not a stickler for good plot. But this film is tedious beyond belief, which you can tell after about 10 minutes. There are no "goodies" so you don't care who lives or dies. There are so many plot holes (like who doesn't keep a suitcase with $10m next to them but just puts in the holding area). Its clearly trying to be "funny" but it's all really obvious.
This is one of the worst films I've seen in a really long time. I really should have switched off after 20 minutes.
It's really irksome that other people seem to like this film - I cannot see any plus sides.
Extraction 2 (2023)
This draaaaaaaaaaaaaged
So, based on the premise that I really like action films and that I'm not that concerned if the plot if wafer-thin or doesn't make much sense, this film bored me beyond belief. After 30 minutes I wasn't convinced and wished I'd pressed stop on Netflix. There just isn't that much good v evil in the film - the henchmen are evil (sort of), but Chris Hemsworth just feels like he's there for the cash - does he really care if they escape? Its extremely slow moving, despite having a few action scenes. I found my mind wandering, and at times I just fast forwarded the most tedious parts. This really didn't work as a film and I'd avoid if you can.
The Gray Man (2022)
Great action, incoherent plot
Now, I like a ridiculous action film and am usually happy to go with the flow with the plot. The action scenes were good, but the plot was all over the shop. Was Ryan Gosling a goodie or a baddy? Did we care about the niece? What was in it for Chris Evans? I started off quite liking it, but by the end I didn't really care what happened to the characters. Its unfortunate as I think there's a good film struggling to get out there. I'd usually roll with the punches on a popcorn action film, but the last third really let it down and I was slightly wishing the time away. By all means make a film ridiculous, but at least have some coherent plot.
PS: Chris Evans DOES NOT SUIT A MOUSTACHE.
Straight Talk (1992)
Dolly at her finest
This is classic Dolly Parton nonsense, but wonderful for it. After leaving her loser partner she ends up being an unqualified radio psychologist. And hilarity ensues! The story is pure hokum but if you like Dolly Parton you'll find this a great film. It doesn't look like it's made in the early 90s - think big hair and power dressing, much more 80s. The acting isn't going to win any awards, but you probably aren't watching it for that. They probably could have made more of the songs. "Light of a clear blue morning" is a banger of a tune and should feature more heavily. I've seen the film at least twice now!
Dorosute no hate de bokura (2020)
Fantastic low-budget sci-fi
A brilliant concept (a TV that can see two minutes into the future) that's built on, twisted and leaves you always entertained. A short movie that really shows that you that a face paced movie can be just the ticket, far better than a 3 hour slog. Joyous.
Geostorm (2017)
This deserves way more than the current level
This is a blockbuster disaster film with epic explosions, absurd nonsense plots and wild weather. If you were expecting high art you've come to the wrong place. It's got great special effects and action scenes. Bravo!
Bargain-Loving Brits in the Sun (2016)
Brilliant. I can't tell you for why.
This is one of my favourite programs on TV. I find it utterly compelling even though it's just people scraping a living in Spain! Everyone seems to love it there.
6 Underground (2019)
Boom! Another action scene
If you're looking for a thousand explosions and a million bad guys getting shot then look no further. All the people whining about lack of plot or acting ability - ignore them. It's an action film plain and simple!
Replicas (2018)
Extraordinary !
So. This film absolutely falls into the "so bad it's good". Without spoilers there are some ENORMOUS PLOT HOLES that left me shouting at the screen. However, it was definitely enjoyable garbage. You can gauge whether you will enjoy from about 5 minutes.
True History of the Kelly Gang (2019)
Great looking film, compelling story
I was a bit sceptical about the film after the trailer and the reviews on here. However, this film is beautifully shot and keeps you hooked until the very end. The acting is fantastic, especially Ned Kelly. I do not understand how people could find this confusing or incoherent - its really quite easy to follow!
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
Better than the Avengers
I really don't get all the negativity here. So a few things:
1) So the lead can't really act. Well, she won't be getting an Oscar but there's not a lot to play with when you're a mutant.
2) Length - this is FAR better paced that the overly-long Avengers: Endgame. The action starts within minutes and keeps going throughout the film.
3) Plot: Citizen Kane it isn't but its about as plausible as other super-hero films. Basis of these: they all have superpowers - it isn't going to be very realistic.
4) Special FX: Much more fun than other films - looked great on the big screen.
Don't believe the anti-hype!
Hurricane Bianca (2016)
High camp fun
If you like a film with a makeover, a sassy drag queen who plots to overthrow the hierarchy, and a bit part from Ru Paul then this is the film for you.
We watched this on a Saturday night and its perfect mindless fun. The plot is ridiculously wafer thin but that's part of the charm. Yes its clichéd and it won't win any Oscars but give it a watch.
Ignore the haters who say the acting is bad and this is unwatchable, if you like Bianco Del Rio then you'll enjoy this film. Don't expect Citizen Kane.
Its worth it for the denouement alone.
