Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
You're NOT Welcome~
Goshdarn it, where do I even begin?
First of all, say what you will about Paul W. S. Anderson's take on RE but at least he only had the incessant "borrowing" down the line... And they always know how to show you a good time!
Secondly, this movie is downright discombobulated! Not only does it reference the OG two games- but ALSO the remakes. Which means OMFG, total confusion as to what it wants to be...
Finally it is shameless in exploiting every fact of the games. In that it couldn't get much more clickbaity than this. Lauding annoyingly mistimed references every chance it got.
Mind you, those are just my three big grievances. Now the deets!
PROS:
+ Cinematography is sleek and I can see where the budget went. Instead of y'know writing...
+ Loyal to the time period with the countless song choices!
+ Fine, the set pieces were phenomenal. Which is what they were counting on AND absolutely delivered.
CONS:
- Casting is hit-and-miss. Or should I say character development is...
- It may look like RE; but it isn't RE. It takes the chunks and appendages of that beloved franchise but Frankensteins it. "Reference Evil"
- Over-utilised the "sneaking up on you" trope as the sole method to build up "TENSION" way too many times.
- Can see where the remakes worked their way in with the unnecessary potty mouths!
- 2-in-1 film is the major fallacy. The moment they went on with that decision. It was doomed for an apocalypse or is it... extinction?
(not shaming Anderson's movies, just a coincidence ;)
- Pacing is utterly ludicrous and uneven. With it taking its sweet, goddamn ass time in the beginning and then races through to the finish.
In conclusion, I feel like this is good enough, without a shadow of a doubt... Why video games need to remain as such because they cannot be separated. Filmmakers are convinced that movie adaptations of games HAVE to contain in-your-face iconic lines (Which by the way, they made me want to hurl and roll my eyes with each one).
Because after all, that's the only reason why fans would want to watch something right? Not actually taking a stab at original content. So, no... No thank you to Raccoon City~

A Classic Horror Story (2021)
You Better Watch It:
I rolled my eyes, I scoffed at the characters... The overly tired and uninspired premise.
The implausibility of the scenarios- but then I checked myself. It was so terrible and I just wanted so bad for it to go in a different direction!
Only to realize I must have fallen under the same band of viewers who probably condemned it and/or left halfway before the hour mark!
But that was the whole selling point- and it made me just so speechless. It's a commentary on violence, saturation of horror movies and also our stubborn demanding of it...
Take the title of the movie with some hyperbole and you will be fine~
Hidden (2015)
A Family, A Shelter and The Rules
π±First Impressions:
In all honesty, the cover of the film unnecessarily gives out more details than it should. You may have heard of it before in bigger budget films- family is trapped during a post-apocalyptic scenario. But this film did something those would never have dreamed of~
Pros:
π Stellar performances; Alexander is the standout followed by a tie with his on-screen wife and daughter (hear me out). You can almost their familial bond and long-established rapport.
π Some mentioned the daughter as a big minus to
the film enjoyment and I definitely see why- but that's precisely the point. It's about seeing things from a child's perspective and of course actually has to do with a significant aspect of the narrative. Hence the coaxing scenes; which were the best, heartfelt parts.
Cons:
πͺ The camera work was phenomenal but at some point it just spiralled out of control and certain parts the tension was already visible, palpable. But the so-called framing of the scenes actually eased me out more so than drew me in... It felt like artistic, creative angles then proper set up of scares.
πͺ The end; I appreciate the message of the film. It's about hope, isolation (something which bears a resemblance to COVID, imagine if this was out 2020). But the choice of affliction they chose was just a way of adding needless action sequences. It could have been more subtle after all the effort they made to craft a highly anxiety, hair-raising psychological horror.
π Verdict π
One of the gems that sadly has burrowed way too deep for me to only discover it today- literally. Don't let some reviews fool you and ruin your judgement of the girl (seriously). Going in blind is best~ A psychological horror film on par with its more famous counterparts like Birdbox or A Quiet Place. It has subtlety and the small setting only helped its cause for immersion, character development.
Fractured (2019)
A Family, A Trauma and The Mind.
π±First Impressions:
It seemed very promising at first- from the premise, cinematography and then surreal imagery. But the moment it's termed a "psychological thriller", then you know things would get screwed up as they're setting themselves up to something that's been done over and over.... only previous films called dibs and did it better.
Pros:
π Going in, you'll notice a rather odd vibe that you can't quite put your finger on it.... The absolutely creepy framing of the scenes and then accompaniment of piano-string instruments further add to that. I didn't regret watching this just because of that alone.
π Performances as expected of Sam Worthington, playing a confused family man involved in an accident at a construction site. He gets understandably frustrated and lashes out at seemingly incompetent hospital staff over his missing wife and daughter, who he's sure were admitted just hours ago. He was able to convey just about every emotion needed- sad, angry and of course his certainty over his sanity.
π Now I have to commend the film for its efforts because for what it's worth there was a constant conflict between how the film should have ended. Of course, there are more subtle allusions and later reveals that nudge him towards the cliche psychological ending but man was it a ride; the daughter's physical injury, the state of the family and of course the husband's grip on reality.
Cons:
πͺ What we have here story-wise is very sad indeed. It's painful and sometimes the answer isn't what you want to hear. There's blame displacement, emotional projection.. It's so on point.
But instead of using the psychological elements into something revolutionary- it falls into the same trap that many films of the genre did. Not kidding, I saw the film's direction the minute mr. Monroe went to sleep. I would have rather see the film into a bigger conspiracy involving organ donation.
πͺ The end of the film was tasteless for me. One, everything that hospital staff said was true in the end and to have it literally unfold was just an insult to intelligence,
Not to mention, wow where's a mobile phone (for the protagonist and his family) when you need one? Suddenly there are none to call because that would ruin what the film was going for? How about calling his in-laws to verify?? This film is trying too hard to be mysterious. It's just mind-blowing.. Thank you movie!!
π Verdict π
I'll just give it straight- I was immensely disappointed.... You have the setup for a great expose while at the same time throwing in some psychological thriller elements, the haunting atmosphere that lingers from the construction site. It's all very amusing and the mystery starts to stir. But nope throw all that away and have it become a typical movie in the similar sub-genre that plays out the same way.
Answers given to you even before the halfway point then have that be repeated until the end where you're mad at the film and it's just "didn't we tell you so"?
Greenlight (2019)
An Opportunity, A Debut and The Price
π±First Impressions:
What actually goes on behind a horror movie set? With so much realistic looking practical effects to simulate gore and violence, acting that's just perhaps too believable at times... It could maybe be real- all it needs is a greenlight~
Pros:
π The cinematography felt very professional and the use of colors, neon lights paint that dreamlike state by the protagonist that's in line with the movie (about sleep deprivation) characters ironically were trying to shoot.
π The cast boasts particularly strong performances. Protagonist comes off very earnest and understandably freaked at such an insane request. His descent into madness and loss of focus was also very magnetic. Sarah and Nancy were the other standout portrayals~
π There was a considerably low bodycount and I think it's really a testament to the genre. Viewers have become desensitized to violence and so the others deaths (apart from the end) that do happen were shown offscreen. The entire movie is based around the buildup and mulling over whether to take a life or not. That was very shocking! Even though things did not go as planned- the characters all have to cover up a different crime at the end.... This is a very worrying documentary about the film industry. So genuine and haunting.
Cons:
πͺ Camera works come off dull and the actors deliver lines that just felt like a mouthful or their acting chops just couldn't compensate. This is an indie film about an indie film trying to make it big so it was unavoidable and in fact could be intentional...
πͺ Finally, the idea of a movie set being turned into a literal horror film has been done many times. "Scream 3", "Cut" but those are essentially slasher films. This film did something remarkably different but is basically a low budget "Birdman" and the stress, pressures of being involved in the entertainment industry. At least that's how it struck me. Only Birdman had a more profound meaning and message. Whereas Greenlight is just a watered down version but based on typical melodrama of revenge and affairs.
π Verdict π
A rather starry-eyed and more than passable attempt at a more realistic form of horror. Its minimal bodycount and impressive performances by the cast should say that much. However, being an indie film- there were some moments that just dragged too long and dialogue being forced. But overall, a well-done thriller that lingers beyond the credits being dropped.
You Might Be the Killer (2018)
A Camp, A Mask and The Nostalgia
π± First Impressions:
Satirization or going against the meta in the horror genre have been done (almost) to death at this rate. From the "Scream" franchise started in late 90s, to the lesser known "Behind The Mask: Rise of Leslie Vernon" and then probably the most popular one "Cabin in The Woods". But this one is probably the most unique of them all. Ooooh there's also "Final Gir-.
Pros:
π Pacing is good. A lot of back-and-forth but in this one- it actually makes sense. Demonstrating Tlthe mask's amnesiac and the effects of the possession. Then Chuck's deuteragonist role to help Sam remember and her expertise of the horror genre is unlike what I've ever seen before. There's usually a similar character archetype but usually they're caught up in the massacre too
π Oozes of nostalgia whether it be from a poster from Chuck's workplace or brought up during their many conversations of comparisons with other films of the genre to help figure out who the killer is. The setting, killer past and scenario is just one big homage to the good old days!
π Characters. The protagonist and Chuck are probably the best but that's a given, what with them having the most screentime. Then there's Jamie, who stands out from the beginning and reminds me of Taissa Farmiga (who coincidentally was in "Final Girls").
Cons:
πͺ Formulaic; despite being a satire of the slasher genre. It is too heavily dependent on it, with a similar progression as well. Down to the ending, which hints of a sequel too. As a huge fan, it's a very geekout moment- but then I just couldn't help but wonder what happens if they take this highly intriguing premise but totally change where they go/end up with it?
πͺ The title is rather misleading because it's only a mystery for about 25 minutes. Then after that, it's only "who will save the day?" or "who would live?". There's also an issue with directing specifically scenes of Sam resisting the mask which are just too slow burn for me because you know it will happen. Yes it's to show how profound the mask's influence was. But it just became scenes to pad the runtime and stretch out ad-libs by the actor.
πͺ Characters. There are way too many to actually make them memorable or interesting. It just becames painfully clear that they serve only to up the bodycount. After all, what kind of slasher would that be without a fodder for the killer? Even main characters have little to no meaningful character development.
πVerdictπ
A genius slasher-comedy that is aware of the longtime pitfalls in the logic of the genre. This movie thus takes a similar premise but with a twist on figuring who the killer actually is... and starting out at the halfway point. But surprise that mystery only lasted so long and it becomes another generic though well crafted slasher film! Funny, nostalgic whether it be in the gory kills or you know- the whole film and great cast at least of the main characters- You Might be The Killer is definitely one not to miss out on~
Feedback (2019)
A Segment, A Hold-up and The Secrets
π± First Impressions:
I was like wow! A radio station being terrorized, poor sods!! But why? That immediately got my attention. Have never seen any thrillers like this before! Well you wanted feedback, here's some!!!
Pros:
π The wider and overarching message of how celebrities can get away bad things. Much like differential class treatment is still something very true in today's society. It's especially sad that despite their hard work to get the radio hosts to confess (though arguably their methods are questionable and flawed but desperate times...) they still wound up as all they'd talked about. Celebrities get a pass and the normal nobodies are discredited or even blamed.
π The premise is one that's intriguing as well and works well for a thriller. Unique too I might add; a radio talk show being interrupted and given a script to be delivered exactly as the intruders wanted it. There were also some brilliant chase and action sequences. Just high production value all around~ Also that one SICK song in the beginning... :D
π Actors were all very good. The two actors who portray the hosts were brilliant too and really showed like they had a history (no matter how shortlived) in spite of how they actually were not on good terms at the present. Andrew's jokester attitude which progressed to frightened. Then Jarvis' stuck-up and increasingly rebellious personality. The other standout is Claire's psychotic performance, that was also very believable- I think it was also implied that she was an attention hogger who's just using her friend Lucy's predicament and that just makes her all the more terrifying.
Cons:
πͺ I know movies like these exist to terrify us but you cannot excuse the fact that there are logic gaps. Such as the really long technical difficulties and how surely someone would suspect something is up when the listeners are left hanging.
πͺ There's also the part where only Jarvis can hear the intruder's voices- that was very disorienting. Obviously it was trying to imitate and immerse the audience but it was more difficult to hear anything that's being said by both Andrew and the masked guy simultaneously. That gave me a headache for a bit which I guess was the point because of the life-and-death situation as well as tension. But I think it could have been done better. There are also other multiple scenes of them talking over another.
πͺ Finally, there was one moment that was Idk "cheap" for lack of a better word in describing what unfolded. When Andrew is offed and an unconscious Jarvis wakes up- it seemed like it was all a dream. Andrew lying down in the position of how he died was excellent. But then the masks having some CGI nightmare was just unnecessary!! What a waste of their budget. Maybe that was the purpose?? :'O
πVerdictπ
A uncommon thriller taking place in a radio station but is still at the end of the day about getting secrets to surface out. The action bits were few and far between but well worth it! Performances were very good from the good guys and bad guys (although I guess I should use those terms loosely). The ending was one that made me feel distressed because if you think about it- we become complicit in knowing about Jarvis' crime too just like how Julia was.
Compliance (2012)
A Friday, An Incident and The Authority
π± First Impressions:
Based on a true story- I've heard that one before. But usually those taglines were either loosely used or just simply marketing ploys. They did it with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror and etc. Armed with skepticism, I hit play~ But spoilers alert, it was not faked....
Pros:
π It is so effective at a thriller. Don't get me wrong, I still questioned the logic throughout and how the characters could've done things differently for instance saying they've carried out what was asked of them and just pretending to play along. I was infuriated so many times throughout and genuinely frightened of the slowly escalating threats and directives given. All done without any need for showing of gore. The psychological torment is so lasting, practically burnt into my mind. I did not feel so hot and the entire experience didn't sit well with me even well after the movie ended.
π It is a statement of how fear of authority and obedience plays in our society. This correlation just rings true and reminds people of the infamous study by Stanley Milgram that after so many decades things have not changed. The film can be a teachable moment as well and to have as many people to be wary is all that can be done.
π Everyone delivered solid top-notch performances. They just seemed like normal everyday people who do not how to act (poor choice of words) at such a peculiar and shocking turn-of-events. As much as I hate to say it, Pat Healy does a ridiculously good and anger-inducing role, I absolutely despise him and probably won't look at him the same way (jk.....or am I?). The women playing Sandra and of course the most heartbreaking one of all, Becky are also very memorable. As for dialogue, how many times could one say "I didn't do it" especially with a 'cop' who's so manipulative, rude and doesn't listen.
Cons:
πͺ Now the film works but like I've said there will be a lot of repetition in dialogue and how the majority of the film takes place in the fast food joint. This may have been done to stay true and follow the source material as closely as possible. But unfortunately it did become an eyesore and difficult to sit through sometimes. Unless that was what the filmmakers were going for. There could have been some nice little tweaks to make it for translatable in a movie medium.
πͺ Last but not least, the cinematography. There were some very odd and prolonged shots. They were probably included to make a point- for example how short the journey was from the police station to fast food joint. But it just seemed like they were trying to pad the film's runtime. That's just how I felt.
πVerdictπ
In conclusion, an unbelivable and yet it happened thriller that made me feel so many bad things; anxiety, anger, frustration and of course fear. At some point I wanted to cry because I started to picture what I'd do if I was in such a situation. Maybe it's something that you have to be there to fully lose yourself in the scenario. Strong performances and a very important lesson for everyone. Though its slow pace can be quite the chore and headache to sit through- that is if you had the stomach for the contents in the first place.
Housebound (2014)
A Mystery, A Family and The Housebound
π± First Impressions:
The box-art of the film really irks me. Maybe because at first glance it seems like a low-budget thriller that already hints at it being funny more so than scary. But at the same time, there is no deying that it is also creepy with the ghostly figure and grabbing Kylie's shoulder. Horror-comedies usually have issues with balancing the laughter and scares but lets see where it takes us...
Pros:
π The story is rather heartwarming concerning family and loss. Though most of it is overshadowed by the comedic back-and-forth between the family members and scare elements, but these do make sense because of their strained relationship. Then there's also the identity and finding of self. It's about a school dropout who's acting out and only through reconnecting with her family and unfortunately having been through a tragedy is the final push before a self-realization of how good one's got it in life.
π It satirizes many branches of the horror genre. Probing of course the supernatural with the initial "hauntings" then it treads the creepy neighbor territory which is just that- a creepy neighbor. Then it makes it way to psychological horror where Kylie is being deemed as relapsing from not having taken her pills to suppress her DID and bipolar disorder (convincingly so too I almost rage). Before finally owning itself as a slasher film! It gets around all these before reasserting its own identity with a creepy person living within the walls. That to me is why this film is so successful.
π Everyone plays their part convincingly. I didn't recognize anyone from this film before but I would very much love to see them again. Kylie gets the chance to display all the sides of her acting chops and it really shows~ I especially adored the woman who played Miriam but am also partial to Eugene's actor (who plays a small role but still memorable).
Cons:
πͺ Not much to say except as expected it is a horror comedy, so regardless of how best they tried to make it work, there will always be issues where there is just not the right time for a joke (don't get me wrong I still laughed) but it sometimes brought me out of the experience.
πͺ One last thing, during the blackout scene (which was really spectacular btw) it didn't make sense or rather I didn't quite get it. Dennis gets attacked most likely by Eugene (since we do see him and prized invisibility clock when the light was turned on for a split second). But that just goes outside of the latter's established personality. He is a shut in, very passive and he knows more but doesn't intervene. Unless Dennis himself tripped and injured himself, that could be it. That was just a little gap I couldn't quite wrap my head around.
πVerdictπ
In closing, a brilliant horror film that may seem a tad low-budget at times. But don't let that stop you because beneath it is a horror film with a very darn good story and strong performances. It also has quite a few terrific scares when the film lets you on about it being supernatural. Then it explores other angles of the horror genre before concluding as a remarkable slasher with a feel-good end.
The Ward (2010)
A History, A Ghost and The Ward
π± First Impressions:
The last John Carpenter film I saw was 'The Thing' and so you can imagine I was pretty hyped about this despite being a decade old. It seems like a run-of-the-mill supernatural horror film and though usually they are my personal pet peeves; I'll gladly give this a chance because I am trying to embrace all aspects of horror. So follow me and lets go in The Ward~
Pros:
π The guessing game of what "Alice" is keeps you invested. Is she actually a ghost or someone in disguise? Why are things happening the way they are?? Film does a pretty good job of making you doubt yourself for instance, I was very sure that there was most definitely a real ghost as it could only be explained as such. Then I low-key wanted it to be a slasher film. But I forgot the most powerful thing of all- the mind is incredibly complex and this film illustrates that quite nicely.
π I think the film is very brilliant. Perhaps more clever than I'd prefer and it warrants a second viewing- because once you know the twist. You start to fill in the blanks and can even picture how it could all make sense. From the protagonist swap between Alice and Kristen to how all these 'girls' represents certain aspects of Alice's personality. But there springs a few other problems, discussed later.
π The actresses were quite talented too. They could all be scream queens! Obviously the lady playing Kristen is given the most to shine and stretch her acting muscles; the rest given one-dimensional characters to play off. But they nonetheless fit together rather nicely.
Cons:
πͺ Like I said, this film is just genius. But I still saw the twist coming though. Because once you realize that there is no logical explanation as to how the ghost can be everywhere then that's when the film stops being scary or makes conventional sense for that matter. After all the biggest clue is the mental hospital setting so Kristen is there for a reason. The flashback scenes were kind of a dead giveaway that it had more to do with her past and they keep showing glimpses throughout the movie. So I was right about it being a brain thing but just not whose brain it belonged to.
πͺ As for the "horror". They are mostly in the form of jump scares and there's so much of them it's obvious as hell. Heck even the final shot of the film is one cheap one. I can think of a recent film, The Grudge that similarly failed at being scary in every way. I thought the atmosphere was immersive at first, but then there's only so much flickering lights and creepy noises that I can sit through. The same goes for the ghost, who at first glance is terrifying but her face is shown too frequently (and up close) that the shock wears off very quickly. It's only a matter of predicting where and when. There was still a sinister air in the institution at least (that's true of mental hospitals).
πͺ Now lets talk plot- so the entire film is a basically us watching Alice's recovery with MPD/DID. But sometimes, it just doesn't make a lick of sense. It seems she was in the institution to begin with but solely for the sake of tricking the audience- Kristen became the new girl and had to be shown to be readmitted.
Then the therapy sessions, the staff and doctor all know about Alice's mental condition but they still indulge her and her personalities. Could that be one of the "rules" the doctor mentioned during their group therapy? Even the names written in chalk, why bother creating the illusion?? Unless that was also in her head too? I thought it was rather cheap. Although to be fair, these can't be avoided when it comes to these kind of movies- since to show what's happening in one's head is damn hard to do.
πVerdictπ
The Ward is well worth a watch as a good mystery but hold back your cringe-faces when you lay eyes on the supposed ghost. Boasting commendable performances all throughout leading to the credits. The reveal of the truth is shocking but if you're like me you may have figured it out because it just doesn't add up at one point. Be careful you don't end up in The Ward yourself!!
He's Out There (2018)
A Killer, A Storybook and The Kids
π± First Impressions:
Home invasion films have become quite popular as of late. With a sure release each year and they're usually quite good. The earliest one I've seen is "The Strangers"- which I very much enjoyed. I was surprised to finally stumble into this film online which pretty much had little to zero presence or buzz about it. Well brace yourselves because now.. it's out there and in the open!
Pros:
π How did this film do things differently? I got a sense of unease from early on because I couldn't quite figure out what type of horror film this was. It started with an time skip / aftermath depiction, probably somewhere near the end with an axe, car out of commission. So, okay it's a slasher-thriller. But then the story book segues into the narrative. Plus the tea party, luring into the woods... I was confused yet again. Ultimately however it finally meanders into the slasher for real. That was honestly very refreshing, not many film do that (at least not intentionally). I was intrigued and it glued me to the screen.
It was probably a slick move by the director but I really thought the film had ended when the children were captured by John. It showed the present events to be tied in to the opening scene. I didn't pay attention to how much runtime was left so I was already pre-furious before it was revealed that Laura and then her kids were alive about to chopped up and dissected. That got me good! It didn't settle on a lazy ending, though yes John escaped (which actually suggests a more supernatural approach).
π Now the actors. Yvonne Strahovski is in it, who I recognize right away as the femme fatale from Dexter (hahaha, I miss that show!!). She is without a doubt the best part of the film, I honestly would love to see her in another horror movie. Here she plays a mother brilliantly, she's patient, brave but hey she's dealing with two really loud children (I know the reviewers mostly hate them) so anyone can snap because she has to put them first. She nails every emotion that's needed of her and even her action scene near the end is totally memorable; she really shines too!!
As for the children, I was annoyed at them but come on, they're just that "keeds" and trust me if you were in this situation, lets see how your little one would fare. Performance wise I'm conflicted because at times they're very good but other times, they're just doing their best to be loud.
π The story, it was pretty creepy to say the least. I knew the storybook would play a significant role but wow that's unexpected. As to what happened to John, I'm not totally clear on that. The book was his as a child- apparently he's still child-like, which would explain his methods of messing with family by indulging on their curiosities, egging the house and using toys. Presumably he went missing but somehow still stayed around for years- even stalking them. Before finally deciding this year, is his year! It is truly terrifying because this man probably watches you from the woods, entered your house at night or when nobody's home. All the while, everyone is oblivious.. Brrr!!
Cons:
πͺ I thought the film was a bit slow. Not in pacing of the story, but rather the scares. I could count so many times that the characters hear a noise, freeze for maybe a minute and then walks very slowly to investigate. I get that they're being careful and understandably frightened but oh my god.
πͺ The low production value or artistic choice of the film. The film was strangely grey-faded or really high in contrast which gives the picture a washed out look. I actually thought it was the lighting and it seemed better in some scenes but for the entire run of the film, it's staring you in the face. Then the camera works, typically lower budget films have their cinematography to be quite telling and different. It also shows here, sometimes they stick with the mainstream angles we're used to and the rest, they go their own way. When the children were hiding in the closet and waiting for their mum, the screen became blurry and a low framerate-like view took over. There are other instances, but you have to see for yourselves to really know.
πͺ Lastly, the character choices or more like writing behind them. There were some undeniably strange moments that made me go "huh.... owhhhh... HEH!?" For instance, the Laura leaving behind the phone in the car. The husband falling prey to a trick that'd only work on children. There was also a scare where the family portrait had everyone except Laura's face which was weird because this gave me the impression, John loved her in some way... But a few minutes later, he clearly wants to off her. Lastly, Laura luring the John at the end with the music box (blaring away to the wind?). This most certainly shouldn't have work!! This is the only time that I questioned the logic behind a movie in all of my reviews~
πVerdictπ
In summary, "He's Out There" doesn't do anything remarkably new in terms of adding to the home invasion subgenre. What it does do extremely well is having a strong, likeable female protagonist. There's no denying the director definitely part ways with the rest of the genre by including a theme of a children's book and a mentally challenged killer. However, due to some creative directions, the films' picture quality did not escape unscathed also draws further unwanted attention to the films' other shortcomings in character design.
Cube (1997)
A Cube, A Theory and The Numbers.
π± First Impressions:
Stuck in the eponymous Cube, a group of people wake up and stumble into deadly traps. This is maybe one of the earliest to do this kind of concept, 1997 and all. A year before I was born~ Had no idea about this film until a few years ago. If it's anything like "Saw" (by that I mean the first film hopefully) then it should be worth unraveling!
Pros:
π The film never gives a solid answer as to who the organization or individual behind the commissioning of such a contraption is. THAT'S the fun part, theorizing whether it's some rich, sicko with time to kill. Maybe the shady government who uses taxpayer dollars for god knows what. Maybe it's a form of rehabilitation device (that's what I thought of myself, they are dressed as prisoners after all). Then there's their being named after famous prisons. Quite a strange but intriguing use of symbolism here...
π The characters. Everyone for the most part was played extremely well. I don't think they were in any other movies I've ever seen. But I probably just don't recognize them in their PRIME (anyone?!). A-anyways, they come off stilted initially but come on- ever heard of 1st impressions? Then eventually they get to know one another (perhaps even too much) and they reveal their true personalities that they've locked away inside. Quentin and Holloway have their most inner demons explored. With Alderson and Rennes, the least. My personal favorite is Leaven, she's innocent, pretty and intelligent. Look at me voicing out biases!!
π The crux behind the effectiveness of Cube as a thriller is how it capitalizes on the lack of gore. You'd think being in this cube where lethal traps are ready to rip them apart within seconds would be the popular, silent killer. But nope, it's the trapped human beings themselves. Quentin offs and injures badly pretty much everyone. This was done both physically and psychologically.
Before you know it; fright, paranoia and anger sets in, getting the best of the poor souls. It's a very real fear that has always existed but usually kept in check. The stress of trying to figure out whether each room is safe and on top of that being locked in with strangers could make anyone lose it.
Cons:
πͺ The Cube has many room *snorts* for theorizing but that ultimately leads nowhere because that's just that. Possibilities. If you think about it- the group had made many mistakes in their attempts at deciphering the numbers in between each rooms before realizing that it was actually sadistically easy... If you apply that logic then the answer could just be very simple too. But I guess we won't know until I watch the sequel/prequel.
πͺ The characters are bright and useful in their own ways but I just thought there were some obvious parts of the film that should'vd been like "wait a minute"'. When Leaven says the numbers are coordinates- I thought okay that's cool, damn.... Then I thought shouldn't the numbers be in running order then? BUT the numbers appeared to be randomized. That's when I pieced it all together. Coupled with the noise at irregular intervals. The entire structure is constantly shifting!! I just thought it was obvious by then, but alas the film needed this to set it's pacing and be more dramatic.
πͺ I know it's a sci-fi and riddle solving movie. But honestly when they kept spouting numbers, it nearly put me well to sleep. Mind you, I've absolutely adore slow, boring movies. Maybe it's just the numbers bit, I admit they do turn me off immensely fast. I am fine with the basics, but once you add in permutations, cartesian... (probably depends on which education system your country adopts but damn I got a headache). Just a partial con. One highly personal to me. XD
πVerdictπ
Cube is obviously an indie film but one that knows exactlt what it is and doesn't overshoot the mark. Being minimalistic in its approach to the premise and set designs. Boasting serviceable characters whose occasionally awkward delivery never takes you out of their predicament. However, its barebones story is very noticeable and there is no solution to that puzzle. That is where the sequel and prequel would come in, I guess.
Jackals (2017)
A Family, A Brainwash and The Cult
π± First Impressions:
The first thing I could think of, "You're Next" and "Torment". What with the animal masks, weapon-wielding and attacking a family. I just got pure nostalgia and had to watch it right away. Even for all I know, that's where the similarities ended... Yes, it did. A tragic end indeed!!
Pros:
π The premise is one that's not explored as much~ It's similar to the "helping a friend with his sobriety" such as in The Evil Dead remake and another film I can't recall right now. It's a painful sight to see a family member changed until they can barely recognize him.. Their heartfelt but ultimately futile attempts to undo the brainwash.
π The actors were believable for the most part and Deborah Unger's idk maybe 100th film (exaggerated) that involves a cult!? These include a couple that's drifted apart, a hotheaded brother that bullied Justin and his girlfriend who has a baby girl. Quite varied and their backstory was solid, but the dialogue doesn't do them any favors because of many repetitions in lines. ALTHOUGH, that's probably out of frustration because both parties keep trying to get their points across but neither are listening one another.
The cinematography was also very well done. It was a somewhat low-budget film but it doesn't really show, there were really melancholic moments and framing that just intensified how f****ed the family was. But they were still pleasant to look at.
π The family's resourcefulness when it comes to weapons was a welcome sight. Because usually only one would be kinda smart in these type of films. That of course doesn't last very long because (reasons) I will get into, later in the cons. Seeing them defend themselves in a time where there were no smart devices of any kind was a bliss we don't see anymore in horror films made after the turn of the century. They did put up a good fight nonetheless especially the dad.
Cons:
πͺ The characters' personalities are the eventual cause of their demise. So Campbell gets caught because of his plan to sneak away and boastfulness of his speed. His fate is left unknown though. Then the mom (who had quite a lot to drink) but ultimately couldn't think straight seeing her other son about to, presumably meet his end. Throughout the film, she consoles both of her children to no avail, in fact the second time was what gave the cult a free hostage.
Then the dad who cannot make the same mistake again, having broken up the family before who fights to his last breath. Justin, of course returns to his cult- the leader accepts him back. Samantha and Zoey's fates are left unknown. It's so tragic because of the tough choices and unpredictability. But the minute they decide to split up was already a big headsmacking moment...
πͺ The ending, so yeah apparently everyone gets offed. I know right? At least it appears that way, they don't show it but the car at the end could have been the cult's- of course the cult member who appears behind Sam doesn't help make matters better either. Which is a huge shame they went with this maybe the budget had finished up or something, everything else up to that point was gold. Yeah, it was already hinted at by Justin himself during their reverse brainwash sessions. Plus, the 20+ vs 6 people, that's just plain cold...
πͺ The first scene we see, I don't really get the point of that. Was it just a found footage intro to the cult that Justin is in? Couldn't there have been a better of way of breaking them in. I felt it was way off, because showing the gore was way too early (if that even makes sense, being a slasher film and all). Yeah, it tells the audience the cult has their members kill their family... and also collect hair because I don't know witchcraft or rituals that we never see.
Better yet, just start the film with Justin being 'kidnapped' by the cult deprogrammer and have the audience think "OMG, poor Justin" at first but then "Owh, you cheeky director you...". But what do I know, I ain't a director or film genius for that matter. I... n-never will be.
πVerdictπ
Anyways, I loved the film- 80% of it anyways. The utter hopelessness of the family in bringing back their son was the icing of the sad cake. One that I very much longed that they'd prevail somehow no matter how unrealistic my wishful thinking was. Some tense moments and there was a high quality of production overall. In spite of it all, it still becomes another slasher film that led nowhere.
Eden Lake (2008)
A Couple, A Retreat and The Teens
π± First Impressions:
What I have seen time and time again are films where people go to a recreational space (that's about to be closed down or built on) that lo and behold, tragedy strikes. I have never seen however, a horror movie where teens were the menace (except the ones with drama and bullying set in a high school). So I figured, it's not going to be that bad- or rather how much worse could it get!?
Pros:
π It started with minute uneasiness about parenting concerns and then kept a sustained level of dread from when the couple first meets the teen gang up until the latter terrorizes them. Before racking up that tension into torture porn territory. You will never feel safe watching this film and I almost broke down emotionally, these teens are something else!!
π The actors playing the couple are by no means groundbreaking but still phenomenal. During the good times, they are playful and happy. Then as the situations became more dangerous and threatening, they grew fearful and scared... Despite Steve showing some stern behaviour- I believe that's more of a facade, one that did not work against these rotten apples. Jen is more calm and patient, but even she has their limits.
π Plot-wise was nothing special. The death before properly proposing has been seen many times before. What I found it most intriguing andvvery ironic was that Jen who is a nursery teacher that has to deal with the fact that educating children can only go so far and I bet had she lived; she would very much consider a career change. The rest of the socialisation process still relies on the household environment and the parents' nurturing or lack thereof. It's a fear that I one day would have to face as well (should the opportunity arise).
l
Cons:
πͺ The ending is total brutality! Like I've said countless times before, good should prevail or at least have a bittersweet ending. Not one where the baddies prevail by a landslide. The first house that Jen runs into after hijacking the siblings of one of the teenagers is also the soiree of the teens' parents- who also hang together, what a coincidence!!
So what the film is conveying that there is no justice when it comes to teen violence and crime; whose parents help to cover up after a brief exchange of thoughts. Which is a very bad and lazy message to send... Why should they get a pass?
πͺ One last thing the portrayal of teenagers, from the working class no less- as demented and chaos bringing bunch (though there were some exceptions) is an overgeneralisation. I noticed that critics have also brought this up because this film caused a controversy of sorts by trying to convey the 'Broken Britain' and rising worries over teen criminality. I do agree to an extent, but the biggest issue I felt again was partly because of the ending which then involved the parents aiding and abetting instead of doing the right thing.
πVerdictπ
Eden Lake could have been more than just a solid thriller and enduring moral about the consequences of parenting as well as a lack of monitoring. Instead it encounters the pitfalls of having too much violence over substance. The resolution of the narrative is rushed and it makes everything the couple suffered through pointless just to illustrate some wildly innacurate stereotypes of middle class teens and that is all that will mostly be remembered.
Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead (2008)
A Breakdown, An Exchange and The Swearing
π± First Impressions:
If you've seen my review on the first Joy Ride film- you would know I've held it in high regards for the memorable characters and immensely frightening story, which built the layers of tension first and only showing the gore later on near the end (even then body count was only 1; which is rare for a horror film). Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead- being a sequel and all, I didn't expect much if anything... But man was I in for a surprise, even though it was short-lived.
Pros:
π Leading cast is deceptively terrible- which is what turned me off a bit in the beginning. But as the plot gives them more situations and expressions to act out, grew more likeable. Their characters may not have been fleshed out that well; married couple, sister of the bride and an online date who is not who he said he was. But it could've been much worse~ Nick Zano (who I've seen in Cougar Town and The Final Destination) was probably the best alongside the lady who played Melissa.
π The plot this time around is centered on the trucker Rusty Nail who still takes things too personally and also returning is his vendetta (what differs is instead another actor was used to portray him in the sequel...). This time we do learn more about him, one of his many dwellings and that his total body count may be more than initially hinted from the first movie. He also loves to give women nicknames; the cleverly fitting 'Goldilocks' suitable with the current scenario. It's as unnerving as he is merciless.
Cons:
πͺ Characters.. Okay so the entire premise of the film is that the group got stranded and stole Rusty Nail's car. But along the way, said owner decided to tail them and provoked (perhaps unintentionally) by almost side swiping them with his truck. This prompted both Kayla and Nick to rudely gesture and run their mouths afoul... This is later mirrored in their initial punishments. That was pretty sick I admit.
So, if you think about it- these two characters were precisely the cause to the predicament the group was in. It's just such a big fat coincidence then- imagine how the film would have continued if they didn't exist or had they been nicer, though I'm sure Rusty Nail would still find a way to torment them.
πͺ Now as a thriller, all that really stayed with me was the excessive violence. No more psychological torture as was the first or clever traps. Within the first 3 min alone, a head is decapitated compared to the first which showed a jaw being ripped but off screen. Here everything is proudly displayed... I know obviously the filmmakers cannot do a side-by-side retread of the original but they changed way too much.... It's just like "The Collector" vs "The Collection". Or even "Alien" and "Aliens"- okay the latter one is an unfair comparison.
πͺ I think I mentioned this before in one of my other reviews. I firmly believe the baddies should die in the end. I know, shoot me. That's why I still haven't watched the Wrong Turn sequels... Because, 5/6 I dunno 7 sequels maybe mean they keep living!! Anyways, the ending in the first one (which had alternate endings where Rusty Nail dies) but they stuck with the one that had him switch the bodies. That was a clever twist.
Here he falls off a f-ing cliff... Like seriously? Then he gets second degree burn marks. Wow, I'm appalled. Suddenly you're like an evil presence? My point is it should have ended with the Joy Ride 2. But alas, the exploitation and beating of inferior in quality sequels must continue.
πVerdictπ
In summary, Joy Ride 2 was a sequel in name only- yeah Rusty Nail is there but he's just having too much fun in this one. The tone took a complete 180 relying on sheer violence and brutality. This is no surprise since I had 2 paragraphs for each of the cons and only 2 pros. So yeah, it's not gonna be good. But I really saw some squandered potential (must have been the heatstroke). The main cast was okay but the writing was forced. The strip-search scene was probably the only noteworthy scene as it really gets under your skin. ;)
The Hunt (2020)
A Rumor, A Victim And The Internet
π± First Impressions:
It goes without saying that a film centred on "strangers waking up and being hunted" is like the new trope of the horror genre. The only difference lies in why they were brought there. So I actually went in with little to no expectations and just looking for some entertainment. Political controversy aside, it's a mighty heck of a good time.
Pros:
π I love the comedy-horror; often times those thriller films do not really go together because one will typically outshine the other. But here it is pulled off with flying colors because of the choice in casting. Actresses playing Crystal and Athena were absolutely made for their respective parts. I laughed more times than I could count!! Their line delivery were on point too.
π The wacky change in hero/heroine in just the first 20 min alone subverted all expectations! I had a really fun time trying to guess what'd happen next though once I got what the film was doing. Even there is an element of blindsiding to the story- admit it when you first saw the group chat, you thought they planned it from the get go too~ That was a twist I wasn't anticipating either.
π There is a clever commentary somewhere about the political situation in the States. I don't really follow much but I can see the clear divide between Conservatives and Liberals, rich and poor, educated and illiterate... Also the whole premise of the film is a testament of the blatant effects of how things end up blown out of proportions on the Internet and how they have very devastating real life effects.
Cons:
πͺ This ain't really a con- but there is a lot to theorize. One, could the Hunt actually be real? I know they said that it's only as real as the manor conspiracy believers made it out to be.. Therefore, they willed it and were actually hoping for it to be true. But why would they joke about such a thing then. It really bothers me, hahahah! Then you have the "Don" being one of them (which is most likely just a psychological trick to get them both on edge) and the whole "Crystal" being one of two women similar in name only. It's a headscratcher alright but I need answers (I need things to laid out for me)...
πͺ Now a real con. The plot of the film is actually quite petty- like the whole point of the film was to prove to people that unadulterated comments especially in the eyes of the public can have repercussions. How do they do that- by actually bringing to reality the one thing that they were trying to disprove to begin with... Near the end, it was even pointed out and ridiculed too by Crystal. Then, the whole clever political, racial and class statements the film was attempting to raise awareness can be said to be flawed or lose their punch as well because of the presentation in it being a comedy and all. Just pointing that out, but I'm just here to pass the time though, doesn't really bother me~
πVerdictπ
I was blown away by the sheer, devilish cleverness in the film's story and direction. The two leading ladies are phenomenal and of course the catfight at the end is the highlight!! The twist of the film was unthought of but for good reasons because of how it is basically a self-fulfilling prophecy that the writers conjured as they hit a dead end. Though, it's laced with actual political satire and undertones of the US- they simply become passing elements to the film's action and jokes that the latter easily overshadows.
Joy Ride (2001)
A Trucker, A Motel and The Prank
π± First Impressions:
From the picture- I thought killer car (obviously that made no sense because the driver would be responsible). Then I realized I do not really watch any car-horror movies in the genre. Plus it stars the late Paul Walker so it should quite a trip down memory lane~
Pros:
π Older movies really put effort in the character development. Seriously, usually horror movies would be at the lower end because people are only interested in blood and gore~ But in this we got terrific actors and explore the relationship of two brothers who have drifted apart. Then one involving a childhood friend and possible love interest. It never blossoms into anything though... that would've been the trifecta!
π The prank gone wrong or blown out of proportions is really at this point a cliche. We got it in a lot of horror movies; 'Sorority Row', Carrie and even the lesser known 'Scarehouse'. The same with this one! It still works wonders tho- probably because it's a 2001 film. Man I wish I had watched it back then when it was released.
π It was terrifying despite it becoming kinda illogical (the trucker is so capable and is indisposed to set all these up). The movie spent a lot of time building up the tension, some truly scary set pieces; cornfields, first motel the brothers were in... Gore wise- we don't actually see anything till the end. That's psychological torment done right!
Cons:
πͺ It was predictable- called out pretty much every twist few minutes before they were about to happen. The Mastercard return, the radio in the trunk and even the switch at the end (but I was slightly off with the latter). Predictability is not a terrible thing but it certainly ruined the scares a bit.
πͺ Ending... As far as endings go, I absolutely hate ones where all the good guys die. I know I'm such a sucker for happy endings and that they survived, which brings me to my other horror pet peeve endings, the BAD GUY LIVES! It's just this film established such fantastic characters and the sequels want nothing to do with it except having the same villain 'Rusty Nail'. Probably not even the same actor portraying him too.... Oh what could have been.
πVerdictπ
Joy Ride marked the start of my new favorite horror franchise (but I am pretty sure the sequels bombed bad being direct-to-video works). It had memorable characters, properly crafted backstory and actors that had the acting chops to bring it to life!! Most importantly the thriller played with suspense and slow burn horror greatly (villain being only a voice and shadow for so long) in the beginning before stepping on the gas and making it a brutal drive halfway up until the end.
Revenge (2017)
A Rape, A Cover-up and The Revenge.
π± First Impressions:
It just goes to show that words do not always capture the scene- from the synopsis and reviews I read, it is basically 'I Spit on Your Grave' (which I have not watched). Instead of a movie capitalising on the sexual exploitation, rape and trauma of the female protagonist, it is instead about how that experience can evolve a victim.
Pros:
π The cinematography and symbolism behind the film is on point. From the initial meeting between Jen and Richard's friends which is captured through an apple being consumed by an ant. Then with Jen's death and resurrection, even to the image of a Phoenix being burnt onto her skin! It's subtle yet it signifies a massive transformation within Jen's character.
π Matilda's acting range is very broad~ She played the vivacious party girl in the beginning who is living the life of a mistress. But then grows increasingly scared when Stan misinterprets her flirtations as 'making a move' and near insane after being raped.
π The whole story is just balls to the wall. It explores an all too well known matter of woman being around men. But it twists that through how the men eventually become the hunted instead despite being adept hunters themselves. The whole movie plays out like an actual hunt- except between humans. The only animal we see is a corpse shot by Richard in the midst of tracking Jen down or through the hallucinations when she ingests the hallucinogens.
Cons:
πͺ As amazing as the story was, a part of me just couldn't comprehend how Jen could've survived (though admittedly the word is barely). It's almost as if there was divine intervention because she seemed very dead and a certain spirit of revenge has possessed her. Perhaps that's why she no longer utters a word after being kicked off the cliff and this goes on until the credits roll... Makes you think doesn't it?
πͺ The films portrays men as scum and it brings the issue of "women asking for it" what with the manner of acting by Jen or how she dresses. Even Richard brings this up; about she's 'irresistible' when an inmensely upset Jen wants to go home. The film could have done so much more instead of giving (obviously what the audience wants) with the eye candy of actors playing Jen and Richard respectively. At least the film doesn't discriminate by only subjecting Jen to the male gaze~ OMG I'm blabbing....
πVerdictπ
To conclude, Revenge is an insanely tense and action packed delivering sought entertainment for close to 2 hours long. Though arguable not the first in the sub-genre of revenge rape; Last House on The Left, I Spit on Your Grave... it does enough to stand out from its peers in many things- setting, story and of course kills! Though I would have loved it more if the men were punished for their crimes because death is just an easy way out..
Living Death (2006)
An Affair, An Attempt and The Retribution
π± First Impressions:
I had a hankering for older horror-thriller flicks and wouldn't you guess it!? Found another one, the plot description alone ensnared me and I was wondering why nobody talked about it more. Surely, there must be a reason, so I went in moderate expectations. Fortunately I did because this film will upset your stomach as well as hit the sweet spots!
Pros:
π The opening of the film was perfect. The setting up of Victor's character and the exploration of his open relationship with his wife (who surprises him midway through a deadly escapade). Intense because we the audience know all too well about what is about to happen with the first onscreen character in a horror movie... But it didn't! She was only crippled- which segues quite nicely to the lawyer~
π The cinematography was somewhat low-budget but it was quite refreshing to see. Especially from the "dead" Victor's POV which is in line with what the audience is told about the neurotoxin used to murder him. The anticipation of when he will rise up again- course obviously he will, is exhilarating despite its predictable nature!
π The story is nothing original but it was the first that attempted to kill using a non-lethal poison. The oversight and lack of knowledge in the method of murder is a very human thing to do. It is exactly the repercussions from this, which is very terrifying. After all the thought alone in murdering someone is already a mental load but to have that person come back and they're unprepared? Mindblown....
Cons:
πͺ The actors as a whole were not terrible, but I thought the guy portraying Victor was best. He brought out the cynical and psychopath sides very well! Also he looks very familiar, I'll do more research! The rest were just average but still belivable... just!
πͺ Now characters- I don't usually point this out because some will naturally shine more than others but not in this one. Nobody (from the main cast, one of the 'good guys') was likeable or rational. Roman the lawyer keeps hiding secrets from the recently widowed (though not for long) who would have benefitted by having more time to discuss what to do next. Elizabeth on the other hand, is understandably paranoid and suspects Roman is cheating even plotting to off her next. They are all self-centered and it made me question who I should be rooting for...
πͺ The ending came off pretty lazy. Which a shame because it did very well in the beginning, then a little bit after Victor is resurrected. But by the end, back to the infamous torture device- which becomes overused. Victor even says it himself, sometimes the psychology torment from threatening to use the device is sufficient to instill fear. But the film never did anything remotely as clever as that. Lawyer dies and wife finally decides to retaliate. The pregnant Catherine at the end, what even is that?
πVerdictπ
Points for the effort behind this microbudget thriller film. The plot is one to remember and a teachable moment to everyone ;). It also brought us one of the most underrated baddies in the early 2000s. But unfortunately, the film hit its peak about 3/4 of the way through due to poor character writing and a questionable ending. Therefore it is easy to see why this film was eventually forgotten... :'(
The Last House on the Left (2009)
An Escape, A House and The Encounters
π± First Impressions:
I had some reservation when it came to this film- for maybe years, because of the plot summary (terrified me very much and I watched a lot of horror movies). I also had a preview of its contents in the parental guidance section which is why I sort of knew what to expect. I finally watched it; exactly everything I pictured it to be and I was right in it being a brutal hour and a half.
Pros:
π The insanely off-putting plot but at the same time, satisfying conclusion (more than I should have been). It's every parent's fear when it comes to their daughters or son (no judgement). There is a persistent theme of parenthood here in how the crook wants to mold himself within his son and that's frightening to me.
π Everyone was brilliantly cast! The villains, menacing and threatening. The protagonists were really likeable despite being the usual teens with a penchant for mischief. Though initially helpless, they all had a lot of fight left in them.
π About 80% of the film is intense and blood-pumping. It was genuinely terrifying as it all appears overwhelmingly hopeless. That is until you see the film has only reached the halfway point, before things start to look up but could still go either way.
Cons:
πͺ Just thinking out loud- but it would have been much more mind blowing if the parents weren't shown or introduced until after Mary assaulted. Then, the wanted criminals show up at a complete strangers' house only to be revealed as the parents of the girl they presumed to be left for dead. Because with how the film actually played out- as soon as the two parties met and we know who each of them were, it was only a matter of time as we all know it's coming.
πͺ One more thing, I get the whole "do unto them" but the morality is seriously questioned here and thrown entirely out the window. Daughter gets assaulted and shot but survives. Parents go on a rampage and murders all three crooks... It's quite the payback but then who is actually the bad guy(s) then? This is all very much hypothetical as the gang obviously would have killed them one way or another but we'll never know could we?
πVerdictπ
The Last House to The Left is a very plausible and scarring viewing experience for just about anyone but families especially. What the film does and shows to the audience can only be an assault to the senses! Despite being a remake of a much earlier work, it made enough changes to be a solid, bloodcurdling thriller.
Vertigo (1958)
A Phobia, A Plot and The Haunting
π± First Impressions:
The first ever work I saw of Alfred Hitchcock was Psycho- revolutionary as a slasher but I grew hungrier for more his thriller masterpieces. Then I saw Dial M for Murder and finally Vertigo. Though I had my doubts initially, this has arguably become one of my absolute favorites by the legend.
Pros:
π The ensemble cast. It goes without saying of course that the director knows how to pick them! But I must absolutely commend the range of protagonists Scottie and Madeliene/Judy who essentially play two different characters each or rather the impression that they are.
π The first time watching it (even sometimes when rewatching it), I could not foresee the shocker of an ending. The over-the-top albeit ingenious of a murder scheme is absolutely entertaining and I can only blame myself for falling in love with the characters... getting too attached.
π The cinematography is beautiful; throughout it's runtime there comes the occasionally rare moment portraying a ephemeral quality; much akin to that of a ghost's or the otherwordliness (in keeping with the theme after all). It stays with you. Even the act of describing and then later on showing the dream sequences are terrifying.
Cons:
πͺ There was that one part in the film where I thought the reveal was rather quick and sudden- we had just gotten to know Kim Novak's second character, Judy. I mean obviously they are played by the one and only actress but there could have been a much longer psychological game to play juggling between the two women. Is it just a striking resemblance? Doesn't it say more about the character of Scottie, seemingly unable to move on after changing Judy's appearance only to find out it was all worthless.
πͺ Midge's character never saw an ending or resolution. At least with Madeleine's husband, it's explained that he has left after having perfectly executed the deed with his late wife. I thought she was phenomenal! Pining after Scottie, she was the only one there to help him after his mental breakdown. It's not really a vexing issue but one I just felt sorry for- perhaps that was the goal.
πVerdictπ
One of the most iconic thrillers that played with audience's expectation start to finish. Usually I am quite good at guessing how the endings would go to slashers, thrillers or even horror movies in general. But when it comes to Alfred Hitchcock's portfolio, I always seem to miss the mark. The endings always endure in the back of your mind long after the viewing and that's something we have yet to see in a modern thriller.
Rear Window (1954)
A Dilemma, A Voyeur and The Murder
π± First Impressions:
So I had just gotten the Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection on Blu-Ray yesterday; and so won't be able to review this from the exact 1954 version. Which is a shame, because films such as these deserve to be seen in the form they were meant to be delivered. That said, it's probably one of my most enjoyable works (which does not say much since every new film of Hitchcock's exceeds the last) since Vertigo!
Pros:
π It explores and details the very human nature of people to snoop and stare- often without the knowledge of the subject. It is especially riveting when you realize that the film makes YOU out to also be basically a peeping tom!!
π The character development is insane! Obviously James Stewart and Grace Kelly steal the show but every resident in the flat gets their tale told (rather shown) and you learn more about each seemingly mundane life... You can get the exact picture of how they play out even though their voices are not properly heard (not clearly anyways).
π A darn good thriller indeed. It keeps the audience guessing and I love how there are always rebuttals to every thought or idea voiced out by the leads. Are they just coincidences? Isn't it too obvious?? Perhaps that's the genius behind it all!!
Cons:
πͺ Just some minor issues- if I were a snoop, I would do it with the shades drawn and just a small gap for space which only one of my eyeballs will peer through. Several times whereby the protagonists were worried they'd get caught but all they did was turn off the lights or lean back.
It could be because filming it through my suggestion would be much harder and inconceivable from a technical standpoint. AND you never see Jeff's apartment window in full view from Thorwald's perspective so there's that! Perhaps in some way, Jeff does want to get caught~
πͺ As a thriller it never goes off the rails. Blood and gore are offscreen which leaves a lot to the imagination. It does work very well but a part of me (just a teensy bit) wanted more creepiness.
πͺ The film discourages the notion of there being a murder halfway in and other times, the protagonists revel, excitable because it all seems even more plausible. So at point, it could only be a zero sum game.
Who am I to even question this classic? I'll just say it anyways- imagine if they had gone in a different direction. Instead of a murder being discovered, something else far more disturbing or unpredictable happens.
πVerdictπ
Rear Window presents a simple even premise banal premise but evolves it into one that's inviting with its talented and prominent leading casts. It captures perfectly the frightening and primal paranoia of us suspecting our neighbors- allI while our everyday lives go on uninterrupted. On a side note, I shudder upon hearing and finding out that a remake was done! There are some logic gripes that I have with the original but they never hindered during my experience of the film.
Villains (2019)
A Couple, A Dream and The Setback
π± First Impressions:
The home invasion and stumbling into darker secrets that the home owners are harboring has been done to death; Don't Breathe, Bad Samaritan and etc. So you can imagine I went in with little expectations- however the comedic elements did strike me as odd and I was highly curious as to how that would work with horror-thriller. Turns out, they complement each other quite nicely!!
Pros:
π All the actors are just terrific. Able to pull off pretty much any tone and mood the scene required! The villains are especially memorable and sympathetic... to a certain extent.
π One of the few horror movies that challenged the usual tropes; a.k.a. the black cop lives!
π I never put this as a pro on its own... But, that ending- I felt like it couldn't have been topped in any other way. The characters of Jules and Gloria summed up perfectly from what unfolds~
Cons:
πͺ Sometimes, the shift between funny and serious can be rather abrupt (but it's a style)- you start to think that things could never go south.
πͺ The crazy-lady and a fake baby dynamic was predictable during the first and only scene that the "baby" was present but that was probably the intent of film.
πͺ Some attempts at character development but Sweetiepie poses to be the biggest gap here. Being just a random girl that George and Gloria kidnapped. It does emphasize the terror of stranger danger though...
πVerdictπ
'Villains' sets the table for a dramatic and lighthearted atmosphere. Though not particularly scary as one (just me?) may have hoped. The outcome being surprisingly engaging and the characters; good guys, villains alike are fleshed out and shine brighlty. There should be more horror-comedies but that would just quickly drain its appeal, wouldn't it?
The Butterfly Room (2012)
A Girl, An Obsession and The Butterflies
π± First Impressions:
From the synopsis I thought it'd play out from the victim's perspective when she befriends the old lady for the first time. I was genuinely surprised that Ann instead was the main star.
Pros:
π Actress who plays Ann is very brilliant- she immediately exudes all the characteristics that make her character to be 'off' the moment we see her. It does not wear off until the credits roll...
π The story is well written and I could feel immense sympathy for the main character / antagonist. Who is mentally unstable yet emotionally (and financially) manipulated by the girls that ironically she eventually preys on.
π There are some very unusual kills in the movie. A constant air of creepiness and threat that never unsettles because you know never know what might happen next.
Cons:
πͺ I had some reservations about the way the movie jumps back and forth between the past and present. Sometimes it does so without indication (which is great) but others it blatantlys uses a 'rewind' effect which just spells it out for the audience.
πͺ The plot while quite original- I could actually see coming; a whole hour away when it came to the fate of the first girl. Yes, it's still shocking when it is eventually revealed but I thought it could have been handled better.
πͺ The child actors and actresses sometime just ruin the scenes. That's not to say they don't shine either! They have their moments especially the actress who plays Alice who is probably the oldest among the children so it's understandable. Nothing too distracting though~
πVerdictπ
I thoroughly enjoyed the unnerving and at the same time melancholic story of Ann. The pride and effort she takes in maintaining her collection is frightening. The only issue I had were some qualms about the direction and creative decisions. Overall, a solid thriller with a memorably developed antagonist who just for all we know needed some therapy and pills. It's so sad.
Stage Fright (2014)
A Singer, A Musical and The Past
π± First Impressions:
Honestly, musicals actually bore me to death (sorry, too soon?). I've never watched the classic "Phantom of The Opera" so I am very new to this musical-horror genre. I've only seen it parodied on American Dad~ With a pitchy start, it is the bits of gore that keeps me glued to the screen. Though I admit the lyrics do stay with me and I found myself singing along at one point... ;)
Pros:
π Actress playing Camilla is just alluring with quite the set of pipes and acting chops to boot.
π I really liked the heavy contrast between rock-and-roll (bad) and the musical theatre (good).
π A lot of references to other films in the slasher genre~
Cons:
πͺ The singing parts get draggy (especially in the beginning) though that's to be expected being in the title and all.
πͺ I have seen this sort of tragedy-behind-curtains but audience think it's part of the show thing done many times (but it's still done well!)
πͺ Why did the killer kill all the others? I get that maybe it's to sabotage the show and ruin that other antagonist who he has a beef with. But it just makes him demented and I don't sympathize with him as much.
πVerdictπ
I liked it more than I thought I would. Movies dealing with musical theatre is always tough because sometimes acting and singing may overshadow one of the other. But suffice to say, everything balanced out. I think horror-slasher fan and music lovers alike will enjoy it very much!!
