Review of Enemy

Enemy (2013)
7/10
Ending messes up all the good impressions 'Enemy' builds throughout the movie.

I'm not a big fan of difficult movies, but I really enjoyed this one. Slow pace, blank space and silence in between, not many lines, visual, and symbolization. All the aspects of the movies I do not like, and even the story is not much to elaborate. All the movie can come up with a doppelganger idea is to switch romantic partners. However, the way Denis Villeneuve builds suspense and thrill of the unknown is still amazing. Rush and pause at the right moment even without much help from music is genius. How Gyllenhaal fills up vacant spaces in-between with pure performance is something to watch. It felt as if I was reading a Kafka book, confusing and abstract but artistic and philosophical at the same time. However, the ending ... I get Villeneuve's ambition to end the movie with something symbolic to complete Kafkaness, but it is weak and adds confusion.
