What Happens When Your Children Have No Social Life
boblipton9 July 2016
Clara Kimball Young is the eponymous Lonely Princess of the movie. She is tired of sitting all day reading, with only the chattering Doris Thompson to relieve her solitude. So when an American millionaire shows up, they fall in love.

Vitagraph sprang for a working holiday for their leading dramatic actor, Maurice Costello, and this movie was shot at least partially in Venice; a medium shot of the actor in a gondola with the Bridge of Sighs is used a couple of times. Although there is some nice acting in this -- Miss Thompson is quite amusing -- the principal attraction of this movie for its American audience was the location shots of Venice.

If you wish to take a look at this movie, a good copy of it is available for viewing on the Eye Institute site on Youtube.

It is rather wise, humorous and calmly pleasing

A picture full of artistic views taken in Venice. The simple story goes very well in this setting and may be said to belong with "Marjory Daw" in the artistic school of American magazine stories. There is no punch to it; it is rather wise, humorous and calmly pleasing. In such a film, photography is of primary importance and has been well managed; many of the scenes are lovely and all romantic and in good atmosphere. W.A. Tremayne is the author and Maurice Costello the producer. With Clara Kimball Young he plays the lending role. W.V. Ranous, as the Italian prince, father of the girl, does some perfect character work. - The Moving Picture World, September 20, 1913
