Home Video and Blockbuster Era Movies I've Watched (including my mini-reviews)

by hywel82 | created - 25 Mar 2016 | updated - 4 weeks ago | Public

What I've watched since 2015, including my mini-reviews in the comments of every list item. What will you find in this list? Movies, direct-to-video movies, TV movies and feature-length pilot episodes for un-commissioned TV series. This list has ended up being mostly genre B-movies with a few mainstream Hollywood movies. Almost every list item is the first time I've seen it. What dates/eras does it span? From the proto-blockbusters of the late 60's, via the home video era to the last few 80's style movies made around the turn of the Millennium. Although mostly in chronological order of watch date, I keep sequels grouped together. Even those sequels beyond the scope of this list because I'm thorough.

Director: Albert Band | Stars: Don Michael Paul, Barbara Crampton, James Staley, Lisa Rinna

Votes: 1,597

17/11/17 A sci-fi B-movie sequel to 'Robot Jox' (1989), again by Charles Band's production company. It took me a long time to discover that this sequel existed. This one was produced by Charles Band and directed by his father, Albert. The robot effects are stop-motion models and minitures. They look dated, but I like how they look, and the whole movie looks fairly good for an early 90's B-movie. But there's only one big robot fight in the movie. And not enough action to compensate for the disjointed, incoherent plotlines. Overall, has some entertainment value, but not as much as the first one.

Votes: 7,867

22/11/20 Direct-to-video Hellraiser sequel by Gary J. Tunnicliffe and with another new actor in the Pinhead role. I expected to dislike this but was surprised how enjoyable it turned out to be. The first quarter was excessively gross and gory though. After that it becomes a better detective story with a premise similar to Se7en (1995) and with a good plot-twist at the end. Overall better than I expected.

22/04/16 Written and directed by George Lucas, this is slow and sparse but good looking. More 'Logan's Run' (1976) than 'Star Wars' (1977). I saw the 2004 re-release with stupid CGI.

54. Electronic Labyrinth THX 1138 4EB (1967)

23/04/16 After watching his feature 'THX 1138' (1971), I wanted to watch Lucas' original film school project. Pretty good for a 60's film school project, but still weird.

23/04/16 Written & directed by George Lucas. Slow but free-wheeling rock-n-roll era movie. I didn't care for it, but it has charm. Good chillout movie. I watched a post-1978 re-release.

56. More American Graffiti (1979)

PG | 110 min | Comedy, Drama, War

Told in four different New Year's Eves in the mid 1960s, John, Terry, Debbie, Steve and Laurie deal with adulthood, the Vietnam war, peace rallies, and relationships.

Director: Bill Norton | Stars: Candy Clark, Bo Hopkins, Ron Howard, Paul Le Mat

Votes: 5,076 | Gross: $15.01M

29/04/16 Unnecessary sequel. Follows the characters into the flower power era. Four different stories in one. Free-wheeling and a good chillout movie like it's predacessor. Not as bad as the reviews say, but hard to recommend.

57. The Car (1977)

30/04/16 Jaws with a car instead of a shark. So bad it's good. Very dated, I think it looks more 60's than mid-70's. Watch it ironically.

01/05/16 Saw a few mins. when it was on the Horror Channel last year and wanted to watch it properly. At last another hidden gem! Pre-'Mad Max' (1979) driving around a post-apocalyptic wasteland in a huge vehicle. Terrible special effects but great story.

05/05/16 Couldn't remember if I'd seen this before. This turned out to be the first time I'd watched it. Great idea but not as thrilling as it could have been. Story meanders too much and pacing is 70's. Good overall.

13/05/16 I watched the Director's Cut version with the comic book trasitions and prologue. Grungy late-70's New York looks great. It's got lots of problems, but I enjoyed it. This could become a new guilty-pleasure movie.

14/05/16 Apart from the cars and fashions, this could be a 60's film, it is that dated. Still a very good crime thriller with good chases. It just should have been made shortly after 'Bullitt' (1968).

65. Apocalypse Now (1979)

19/05/16 I watched the Redux version. At 3 hours, 15 minutes long, it's twice as long as most movies on this list. It has lots of great, memorable bits. The story also slowly meanders for too long. Worth re-watching.

20/05/16 A haunted-ship story. Had the potential to be spookier than it was. The style was also dated and looked more like a mid-70's film.

21/05/16 Great sci-fi idea. Not quite a classic but definitely a hidden gem. Aged well apart from the special effects. All the aircraft carrier and jet plane action also help, giving a lot of it a 'Top Gun' (1986) feel.

22/05/16 This comedy has some good moments. Also not the family movie it could have been. Same producers as 'Back To The Future' (1985). Overall, pretty good.

Director: Noel Nosseck | Stars: Harry Hamlin, Joseph Bottoms, Deborah Van Valkenburgh, Richard Cox

Votes: 572 | Gross: $1.79M

23/06/16 Another B-movie Car-movie. This dated drama lacks the action I want from a car movie. It's hard to find (I watched a VHS-rip found online), but don't bother hunting for it unless you're really into LA street racing.

75. Southern Comfort (1981)

Director: Walter Hill | Stars: Keith Carradine, Powers Boothe, Fred Ward, Franklyn Seales

24/06/16 I like the killer hillbilly theme. This has Louisiana Cajuns, not canibals or mutants, so more like Deliverence (1972). Worth watching and underrated.

76. Smokey Bites the Dust (1981)

PG | 87 min | Action, Comedy, Romance

This movie follows the rivalry between a small-town southern sheriff and a small-town teenaged thief who steals cars and destroys them with the sheriff's daughter by his side.

Director: Charles B. Griffith | Stars: Jimmy McNichol, Janet Julian, Walter Barnes, Patrick Campbell

Votes: 366

25/06/16 Shameless cash-in on 'Smokey and the Bandit (1977)'. This Roger Corman B-movie is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. But it's got enough car chases and stunts (mostly re-used stock footage) to nearly be ironically fun.

77. Moving Violations (1985)

PG-13 | 90 min | Comedy

26/06/16 Watched by mistake. I was aiming for 'Moving Violation' (1976) instead. 'Moving Violations' (1985) is basically 'Police Academy' (1984) but at a traffic school. Below average.

78. Moving Violation (1976)

Votes: 418

30/06/16 This is the right 'Moving Violation(s)'! Interesting to see the source of the stock footage for 'Smokey Bites the Dust' (1981). Quite good for a Roger Corman carspoitation B-movie. This also has drama. Overall, a fairly good movie.

79. Thunder and Lightning (1977)

01/07/16 Interesting to see the source of the stock footage for 'Smokey Bites the Dust' (1981). This Roger Corman B-movie is a bit like Burt Reynolds hick-flicks 'White Lightning' (1973) and 'Gator' (1976) but more poorly made. On the upper end of average for fun.

80. Moonshine County Express (1977)

PG | 95 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

Director: Gus Trikonis | Stars: John Saxon, Susan Howard, William Conrad, Morgan Woodward

Votes: 495

02/07/16 Another moonshine-runner, Hicksploitation B-movie. More drama and fewer car chases than I'd like. Dated but still entertaining. Hard to find.

81. A Small Town in Texas (1976)

PG | 96 min | Action, Adventure, Crime

A crooked sheriff in a small Southern town frames an ex-convict in a drug bust and takes his girlfriend.

Director: Jack Starrett | Stars: Timothy Bottoms, Susan George, Bo Hopkins, Morgan Woodward

08/07/16 Slow paced crime drama punctuated by occasional car chases and stunts. Needed more car chases and stunts. Not bad for a B-movie, but I can't recommend it.

09/07/16 A Roger Corman, post-apocalyptic, futuristic B-movie. Awful dialogue, Classic 'Doctor Who' level of special effects make for a very dated 70's style of sci-fi. It does have lots of action, chases, stunts, fights and explosions. Hard to find and almost so bad it's good.

83. Stingray (1978)

10/07/16 Hard to find Road-Movie/B-movie. Low production values and strange mix of violence and comedy. Doesn't know if it wants to be a family friendly comedy or a crime thriller. Has some good moments so not bad overall.

84. Smokey and the Bandit (1977)

15/07/16 Watched this dozens on times on television. One of my all-time favourite movies. If you only watch one hick-flick carsploitation road-movie, make it this one. Good to finally watch the original version without the swearing edited out for television.

16/07/16 Watched this a few times on television. Apart from the big finale, this is pretty bad. Good to finally watch the original version without the swearing edited out for television. This is a flimsy children's film with swearing.

17/07/16 This is why I re-watched the first two. To get to the notorious 2nd sequel which I don't think I've watched before. It has some fairly good stunts but they don't make up for all the problems. Nothing about the plot or story makes any sense. One of the worst films on this list.

30/07/16 Strange flower-power era carsploitation road-movie drama. Story doesn't make much sense and it has no proper ending. Has some charm but not enough entertainment value, chases and stunts for me to recommend.

88. White Line Fever (1975)

Votes: 214,636 | Gross: $57.23M

13/08/16 Watched before but only a TV version in the late 90s. This time I watched the extended version. The music and musician cameos went over my head. I was watching for the comedy and the carsplotation. The comedy holds up fairly well, just a little dated. The car chases are pretty good. Too much swearing to be family friendly. Overall, memorable and still a lot of fun.

90. Blues Brothers 2000 (1998)

Votes: 39,981 | Gross: $72.18M

25/08/16 Watched it before on TV back in the 1990's. Another illegal trans-American road-race movie similar to 'Cannonball!' (1976) and 'The Gumball Rally' (1976). This has lots of stunts and chases and also funnier than the ealier movies. A bit dated, but still lots of fun. One of the better Hal Needham/Burt Reynolds carsploitation movies.

93. Speed Zone (1989)

PG | 94 min | Action, Comedy, Sport

Votes: 3,700 | Gross: $3.08M

28/08/16 Can't remember if I've ever watched this on TV. Hard to find; the best version I could find was ~4 mins. less than duration stated on IMDB. Different director and mostly different cast. Great actors but awful script and generally badly made film. The last of the 70s and 80s car chase films. Overall, below average.

94. The Cars That Ate Paris (1974)

29/08/16 Hard to find the full version instead of the reduced US cut. Best I could find was a 1 hour 27 min. version, ~4 mins short of the IMDB stated duration. This was more surreal and art-house than I expected. Good to see Bruce Spence and hints of 'Mad Max' themes. Overall, too weird to be entertaining and enjoyable.

09/09/16 Watched it years ago on TV. This time I watched the most complete version available, the uncut UK theatrical version. One of the first and few car-chase/carploitation road movies that everyone should watch. Cool, but dated and very much of the flower power era.

96. Vanishing Point (1997 TV Movie)

PG-13 | 91 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

Votes: 3,061

16/02/18 TV Movie remake of 'Vanish Point' (1971). My expectations were low. Being a TV movie, the scale and production values are lower. They also changed the plotlines and introduced more conventional drama. At least they used the right cars and had reasonable car action sequences. It also tries to keep the spirit of the original. Overall, it's an unnecessary remake but with enough car action and the right tone to be okay if you enjoy car movies.

15/09/16 Titled 'Cold Sweat' in English. Watched because someone on IMDB mentioned it had a good car chase. I watched the most complete version (93 mins.) available. One good car chase, but it doesn't make up for this very dated action crime thriller.
