The Baltimore drug scene, as seen through the eyes of drug dealers and law enforcement.

Stars: Dominic West, Lance Reddick, Sonja Sohn, Wendell Pierce

Votes: 377,474

In the highly coveted and divisive position, Greatest of All Time (GOAT). As a criminology student during its initial airing, I liked the in-depth portrayals of conditions procedures outcomes(which was like extra credit to my studies). David Simon’s seminal work in the re-mix of journalism and storytelling—also the start of my healthy relationship with HBO.

2. The Sopranos (1999–2007)

New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano deals with personal and professional issues in his home and business life that affect his mental state, leading him to seek professional psychiatric counseling.

Stars: James Gandolfini, Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco, Michael Imperioli

Votes: 471,240

You can’t mention HBO without this groundbreaking show coming to mind. Despite the genre and subject matter, quite reflective of the American zeitgeist of the times.

3. Band of Brothers (2001)

TV-MA | 59 min | Drama, History, War

The story of Easy Company of the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division and their mission in World War II Europe, from Operation Overlord to V-J Day.

Stars: Scott Grimes, Damian Lewis, Ron Livingston, Shane Taylor

Votes: 527,227

This was #1 on my list for some time, it’s only ranked lower now because of the limited mini series status. A lot more shows had more ample opportunity to “flex their chops.” Let's see how the spiritual sequel, 'Masters of the Air,' fares later this year.

4. Chernobyl (2019)

TV-MA | 41 min | Drama, History, Thriller

In April 1986, the city of Chernobyl in the Soviet Union suffers one of the worst nuclear disasters in the history of mankind. Consequently, many heroes put their lives on the line in the following days, weeks and months.

Stars: Jessie Buckley, Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Adam Nagaitis

Votes: 865,229

This show was a darling during its awards season for a reason, sweeping 2019 like Soviet newswires on the actual disaster.

5. Shōgun (2024)

TV-MA | Adventure, Drama, History

When a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village, Lord Yoshii Toranaga discovers secrets that could tip the scales of power and devastate his enemies.

Stars: Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Yûki Kedôin

Votes: 96,231

This fictionalized historical drama recreates Sengoku Japan as the Tokugawa Shogunate comes into power. Rare that a show breaks into my top 10 within just watching the first half of a season--it's that good.

6. Fargo (2014–2024)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

Various chronicles of deception, intrigue, and murder in and around frozen Minnesota. All of these tales mysteriously lead back one way or another to Fargo, North Dakota.

The Roy family is known for controlling the biggest media and entertainment company in the world. However, their world changes when their father steps down from the company.

Stars: Nicholas Braun, Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Peter Friedman

Votes: 272,922

Prior to this show, Jesse Armstrong, was notorious mostly in English humor and political comedies. ‘Sucession’ takes all that wonderful experience and turns it on the fictional Roys of 1% America.

8. Mad Men (2007–2015)

TV-MA | 45 min | Drama

A drama about one of New York's most prestigious ad agencies at the beginning of the 1960s, focusing on one of the firm's most mysterious but extremely talented ad executives, Donald Draper.

Stars: Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, January Jones

Votes: 260,517

‘The Sopranos’ alumni, Matt Weiner’s stories of mid-century America through an oughts lens was another groundbreaking show. This and TWD really put AMC television on viewers’ radars.

9. Black Mirror (2011– )

TV-MA | 60 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

This multi-genre anthology will make you fear and love technology.

10. Peaky Blinders (2013–2022)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama

A gangster family epic set in 1900s England, centering on a gang who sew razor blades in the peaks of their caps, and their fierce boss Tommy Shelby.

Stars: Cillian Murphy, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Helen McCrory

Votes: 649,719

Steven Knight’s early 20th century England made TV history, both literally and figuratively. The theme song alone carries the show into memory.

11. Gomorrah (2014–2021)

TV-MA | 45 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

Ciro disregards tradition in his attempt to become the next boss of his crime syndicate. The internal power struggle puts him and his entire family's life at risk.

Stars: Salvatore Esposito, Marco D'Amore, Ivana Lotito, Cristiana Dell'Anna

Votes: 44,449

You might notice a strong affinity for crime dramas in my top picks, but Roberto Saviano’s Gomorra really does shine light on Europe and its deep criminal institutions. Some of the drama may be over-the-top, but what is expected of a real-er Italian ‘The Sopranos.’

12. The Boys (2019– )

TV-MA | 60 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

A group of vigilantes set out to take down corrupt superheroes who abuse their superpowers.

Stars: Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty

This parody of the super-heroes journey would anger Joseph Campbell but we love it for that and the not-so-subtle satirical social commentary.

13. Gen V (2023– )

TV-MA | 50 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

From the world of "The Boys" comes "Gen V," which explores the first generation of superheroes to know that their super powers are from Compound V. These heroes put their physical and moral boundaries to the test competing for the school's top ranking.

Stars: Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, Wes Chatham, Shohreh Aghdashloo

Votes: 172,266

I got onto the bandwagon late, starting with the show then to the books. This Amazon Prime exclusive brought hard sci-fi to American audiences, but the story still had momentum to become a global cult favorite. Sadly, they ended the show early even though they only covered the first 6 books in the series.

15. Atlanta (2016–2022)

TV-MA | 30 min | Comedy, Drama, Music

Earn and his cousin, Alfred, try to make their way in the world through Atlanta's rap scene. Along the way they come face-to-face with social and economic issues touching on race, relationships, poverty, status and parenthood.

Stars: Donald Glover, Brian Tyree Henry, LaKeith Stanfield, Zazie Beetz

Votes: 88,024

They took the original film comedy and ran with it. One of my favorite sit-back and laugh shows. Who knew about Kiwi humor and didn’t put more to get it out in the World earlier…?!

17. People Just Do Nothing (2014–2018)

TV-MA | 30 min | Comedy, Music

A mockumentary series about a group of failed MCs from West London and their passion for pirate radio.

Stars: Allan Mustafa, Hugo Chegwin, Asim Chaudhry, Steve Stamp

Votes: 8,145

Take the British humor of ‘Peep Show’ and combine the workplace satire of ‘The Office’ and ‘The IT Crowd’ mixed within hip-hop culture, it may not hold mass appeal, but I love the irony projected in the show.

18. Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000)

TV-14 | 45 min | Comedy, Drama

A high school mathlete starts hanging out with a group of burnouts while her younger brother navigates his freshman year.

A platform that launched the careers of so many greats in modern comedy, disappointingly canceled in its first season.

19. Arrested Development (2003–2019)

One of the best on American public access, lots of comedic careers in television gained notoriety from here.

A suspended lawyer is forced to enroll in a community college with an eccentric staff and student body.

Stars: Camille Cottin, Thibault de Montalembert, Grégory Montel, Liliane Rovère

Votes: 16,727

A very smart workplace comedy about a French talent agency. One of my favorite sit-back and read subtitles shows. It makes me mad that it was repackaged by Netflix.

A group of young offenders doing community service gets struck by lightning during a storm and start to develop superpowers.

Stars: Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Joe Gilgun, Iwan Rheon, Lauren Socha

Stars: Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Betsy Brandt

Votes: 2,136,229

To close out the all powerful triumvirate at AMC, many consider Walter White’s villain's journey one of the GOATs. I have qualms with this show just because viewers somehow confuse Walt as the hero of the story, when it is FAR FAR from it.

30. Better Call Saul (2015–2022)

TV-MA | 45 min | Crime, Drama

The trials and tribulations of criminal lawyer Jimmy McGill in the years leading up to his fateful run-in with Walter White and Jesse Pinkman.

Stars: Bob Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn, Jonathan Banks, Patrick Fabian

Votes: 647,323

I actually prefer Saul Goodman’s villain's redemption journey over ‘Breaking Bad,’ but we wouldn’t have one without other. It sits at a lower rank just because it’s a spin-off show.

An Atlantic City politician plays both sides of the law by conspiring with gangsters during the Prohibition era.

Anya Taylor-Joy in a Scott Frank production about Chess—capital C. I’ll be upset if you don’t “take-away” a love of the actor.

At the intersection of the near future and the reimagined past, waits a world in which every human appetite can be indulged without consequence.

Stars: Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris, Thandiwe Newton

Votes: 532,815

A Nolan and his wife at the helm, this future sci-fi dystopia made the common man question the nature of their reality. I’m upset they canceled this story a season early. Hopefully we get closure with a re-order or a movie.

After a series of events, the lives of a security operative and an assassin become inextricably linked.

Stars: Jodie Comer, Sandra Oh, Fiona Shaw, Kim Bodnia

Votes: 134,940

A nostalgic spy-vs-spy remake, with an original story of a sociopathetic assassin of late Soviet origin against a lovable MI-5 investigator. Had a very strong first few seasons with a lackluster finale is still worthwhile watch. Hard not to fall in love with Villainelle’s quirks and attitude.

Votes: 2,284,280

Considered the greatest contemporary fantasy television series, this HBO favorite, really drew the viewer in with its politicking, sex and violence, but ended with a very controversial finale. The production creatives behind the show therefore are loved and hated by its audience.

Votes: 375,852

I consider this implement of G.R.R.Martin’s fantasy ‘Game of Thrones’ world, a far better everything. The way it invokes emotion and sympathy for its main pro-antagonists and develops the lore is a flashback to classic GoT glory.

A down-to-earth account of the lives of both illustrious and ordinary Romans set in the last days of the Roman Republic.

I would say, a return to form but really more of a magnus opus for AMC and TWD universe, epic in scale with sharp concise storytelling fitted with plentiful nods to questions accrued in 2 decades of a franchise.

Comedian Dave Chappelle hosts this sketch-comedy show that parodies many of the nuances of race and culture.

Stars: Dave Chappelle, Donnell Rawlings, Rudy Rush, Charlie Murphy

Votes: 71,768
