1. Driven to Abstraction (2019)

TV-PG | 84 min | Documentary, Crime

Driven to Abstraction unravels a mutating tale of self-delusion, greed, and fraud-- the $80 million forgery scandal that rocked the art world and brought down Knoedler, New York City's ... See full summary »

Director: Daria Price | Stars: Andy Chen, Gregory Clarick, Patricia Cohen, Aaron Crowell

Votes: 40

Watched via: Amazon Prime Date: 01.01.22 RE-watchability: 3*** (out of 5) Commentary: A film that begins awkwardly and ends awkwardly as it tries to tell a complete story while leaving out the whole "start at the beginning" part. That's so overrated anyway. Everyone knows the best way to tell a story is to begin with the most interesting part and weave in the sorted details of both the back story and the eventual ending. No matter how hard it is for some viewers to keep up with.

This is still a solid doc about a (all too common) scam in the art world (which seems to have a new one every week). It delivers the goods with the story and interviews but manages to annoy with the structure of said story. (i.e. start at the beginning).

2. Coyote Lake (2019)

TV-MA | 93 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

40 Metascore

Ester and her overbearing mother run a small bed-and-breakfast near the US/Mexico border. Two unwanted guests arrive, threatening everyone's safety. But the two women hide a secret that may prove the most dangerous of all.

Director: Sara Seligman | Stars: Camila Mendes, Adriana Barraza, Andres Velez, Manny Perez

Votes: 1,409

Watched via: Amazon Prime Date: 01.02.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: A slow paced thriller that gives the characters a bit of time to develop before throwing the ending at you is a nice change of pace. This one does exactly that. Now while I'll admit I had the ending figured out from the moment I read the synopsis but I did not know how they'd pull it off. It all made perfect sense. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by this thriller.

3. Events Transpiring Before, During, and After a High School Basketball Game (2020)

75 min | Comedy

Students, coaches, and players interact at a high school on the evening of a basketball game.

Director: Ted Stenson | Stars: Andrew Phung, Paul Cowling, Jay Morberg, Reamonn Joshee

Votes: 108

Watched via: Tubi Date: 01.03.22 RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5) Commentary: If Superstore were a movie about high school basketball then this would be it. The title is obnoxiously long but the film is not. It's basically a bunch of interconnected (but still seperate) stories playing out simultaneously during a basketball game. Much like Superstore it's filled with silly sight gags that matter nothing to any of the overall plot(s). But add to your enjoyment because of the silliness.

It's one of those films that is so subtle with the humor that much of it you'll laugh about later. Like the lady with the knitting who "films" the game on her old RCA VHS camcorder that never seems to follow the action. It's even funnier now that I think about it again.

I see that the rating for it is just a 5.8 (as of this writing) which surprises me but also doesn't. Subtle humor such as in this film is not everyone's cup of tea. I liked it. But many others may think it boring. And I can see that argument. But I'd happily watch it again. Good stuff. Entertaining AF.

4. The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

G | 85 min | Comedy, Drama, Family

64 Metascore

The Muppets present their own touching rendition of Charles Dickens' classic tale.

Director: Brian Henson | Stars: Michael Caine, Dave Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Jerry Nelson

Votes: 70,667 | Gross: $27.28M

Watched via: Digital Copy Date: 01.04.22 RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5) Commentary: I've always truly loved the Muppet movies starting with the 'Muppets Take Manhattan' in the mid 1990's. This one is a fantastic addition to that legacy. A timeless tale told in a new way with just enough changes to make it fresh. Both the human talent and the Puppeteers deserve kudos for a job well done. It's both hilarious and heart warming. Of course I'll watch ANYTHING with Gonzo and Rizzo as the stars. They crack me up just looking at them. So yes I LOVED it.

5. The Lie (2018)

R | 97 min | Drama, Thriller

45 Metascore

A father and daughter are on their way to dance camp when they spot the girl's best friend on the side of the road. When they stop to offer the friend a ride, their good intentions soon result in terrible consequences.

Director: Veena Sud | Stars: Peter Sarsgaard, Mireille Enos, Joey King, Cas Anvar

Votes: 20,328

Watched via: Amazon Prime Date: 01.05.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: you watch this movie and the thing that kept popping into my head was why are they not using flashbacks to illustrate the fight between the girls that led to one of their deaths? turns out the answer was simple, REALLY fucked up and hilarious. I'm not gonna ruin it for you (surprisingly). Though that was merely a backdrop to the crazy parents slowly but surely losing their minds as they try desperately to cover their daughters awful crime(s). I think it deserves better than the current IMDb rating (5.8) but not by much. I enjoyed it but I can see how many people wouldn't.

6. West by Orphan Train (2014)

Director: Colleen Krantz | Stars: Bo Barker, Kailey Johnson, Brandon Miller, Nathan Miller

Votes: 106

Watched via: Amazon Prime Date: 01.05.22 RE-watchability: 3.5**** (out of 5) Commentary: This "feature" barely qualifies to even be on this list as it's under an hour long (but only by a minute or so). But it's so well done that it leaves you craving more. It's too bad the production couldn't have added 30 minutes to the runtime and include more of the stories that were merely mentioned in passing or the ones that, no doubt, had to be left on the cutting room floor. I'd be up to hear those. Excellent film anyway.

7. Lucy and Desi: A Home Movie (1993 TV Movie)

108 min | Documentary, Comedy, Music

Home life of Desi & Lucy Arnaz, from beginning to end, actually, including clips of their early lives & family members.

Stars: Lucie Arnaz, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Desi Arnaz Jr.

Votes: 262

Watched via: Amazon Prime Date: 01.05.22 RE-watchability: 3.5**** (out of 5) Commentary: A stellar look at what really happened behind the scenes of TV's most iconic classic sitcom. Hosted by the real life children and told through the lens of home movies never before seen by the public. This is good stuff. Yes the most of the stories are well known but the kids commentary on the subjects is definitely new and worth the price of admission alone.

8. Cryptopia: Bitcoin, Blockchains and the Future of the Internet (2020)

Not Rated | 86 min | Documentary

Five years after his first documentary, award-winning producer/director Torsten Hoffmann revisits Bitcoin and sets out to explore the evolution of the blockchain industry and its new promise. Can this technology, designed to operate independent of trust and within a decentralized network, really provide a robust alternative to the Internet as we know it?

Directors: Torsten Hoffmann, Michael Watchulonis | Stars: Andreas M. Antonopoulos, Vitalik Buterin, Torsten Hoffmann, Robert Kahn

Votes: 1,353

Watched via: Amazon Prime Date: 01.06.22 RE-watchability: 1.5* (out of 5) Commentary: My god what a boring mess of a film. It resembles a poorly made educational film you'd see in college that tries to explain a topic but fails because by the time it's over you're asleep. I'm not even sure how I made it through, to be honest, it's that boring. I figured, judging by the synopsis, that I'd learned something new. Nope. Too bored to really pay attention after the first 45 minutes.

9. Explant (2021)

86 min | Documentary

Breast Implant sickness. She has her 30 year old implants removed. No bra needed now.

Director: Jeremy Simmons | Stars: David Case, Michelle Visage

Votes: 113

Watched via: Paramount+ Date: 01.07.22 RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5) Commentary: An engrossing doc about a debate that has raged (off and on) over the years. Are breast implants safe? The film plays out as it's central character decides to have hers removed (i.e. explant). We then learn the history of the product. The film seems to desperately want a full-on condemnation of the practice but can never uncover enough evidence to do so. The closing interview with Dr. Rose is so illuminating as he reveals yes he believes some women do have adverse effects from implants. But among the thousands of women he's performed surgery on only a hand full have reported serious medical issues that can be directly attributed to the implants themselves. Very interesting. But none too surprising. Excellent doc.

10. The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story (2018)

102 min | Documentary

A documentary film about the Nickelodeon Network, telling the story of its humble origins deep into the SNICK years.

Directors: Scott Barber, Adam Sweeney | Stars: Jason Alisharan, Drake Bell, Michael Bower, Danny Cooksey

Votes: 1,425

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.08.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: A rose colored glasses look back at the founding of the company that made slime cool. The stars and the power players that made it all happen are here to fill in the details about the series that changed our world. Too bad they never touch upon any of the more interesting details of the stories. Like why was Salute Your Shorts cancelled after only 26 episodes? And what about the involvement of one Dan Schneider? Among many other topics (loses half a * for that). This doc left a lot to be desired. But it's still well produced and serves as a video love letter to both the people who created the magic and the ones who simply loved it.

11. And We Go Green (2019)

99 min | Documentary, Sport

55 Metascore

Professional drivers on the international Formula E circuit - like Formula One, but with eco-friendly electric cars - race for victory across 10 cities in this white-knuckle documentary.

Directors: Fisher Stevens, Malcolm Venville | Stars: Alejandro Agag, Jules Bianchi, Sam Bird, Orlando Bloom

Votes: 233

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.09.22 RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5) Commentary: I'm addicted to documentaries. Just the truth. But I'm especially in love with ones like this that let me visit a world I've always been intensely curious about but never had the time to fully explore. Getting to know the drivers and the stories that make the races more interesting. This doc did that, and more, and told the history of the world's first all electric racing series. It earns every point of that 6.8 (as of this writing) IMDb rating. Recommended.

12. This Mountain Life (2018)

76 min | Documentary, Adventure

Few venture into true mountain wilderness. A riveting portrait of human passion set high in the peaks of British Columbia, Canada.

Director: Grant Baldwin | Stars: Simon Beck, Martina Halik, Tania Halik, Barry Blanchard

Votes: 382

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.10.22 RE-watchability: 2** (out of 5) Commentary: Here's a doc that had tons of promise but pissed it away in it's silly quest to cram as many stories into a 90 minute runtime as possible. Instead they should have focused solely on the mother/daughter hiking adventure and what they went through. That would have made for an interesting movie. But what we got was clips of the ladies as they struggled across the forbidden wasteland in between unrelated stories of people living in remote locations (can anyone explain what the fuck that nun story was all about?). I was looking forward to this one but after watching it I hve to admit I was rather let down. While the story telling is good it's the fact that we never got enough of any of the stories to satisfy my taste. Stick to the base story about the ladies hiking and it would have been much more enjoyable. For me.

13. Batman & Bill (2017)

TV-14 | 93 min | Documentary, Animation, Mystery

Documentary about the uncredited co-creator of Batman, Bill Finger.

Directors: Don Argott, Sheena M. Joyce | Stars: Thomas Andrae, Jerry Bails, Otto Binder, Benjamin Zaido Cruz

Votes: 2,273

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.12.22 RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5) Commentary: A doc that recounts the incredibly true tale of who actually co-created The Batman way back when. The film cleverly lays out the story in a pretty straight forward fashion that kept me on the edge of my seat. It will you too. It's well deserving of it's currently fantastic IMDb rating (8.0 as of this writing) and probably should be a bit higher. Check this gem out.

14. Free to Run (2016)

Director: Pierre Morath | Stars: Denis Alcade, Neil Amdur, Gaby Andersen-Schiess, Gloria Averbuch

Votes: 388

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.13.22 RE-watchability: 3*** (out of 5) Commentary: A solid, if unspectacular, entry into the sub-genre of sports history docs. Well made but the constant jumping from one side of the story (from men to women) resulted in large parts of the sports history being left out. While they did cover the most famous name of all, Steve Prefontaine, he wasn't mentioned at all for the first half of the film, though his story was told eventually. Several other stories were built up to be important before being concluded with a passing comment later in the film (this is very frustrating to say the least). Still it's an enjoyable, though largely incomplete portrait of the history of running.

15. Changing the Game (2019)

TV-14 | 88 min | Documentary, Drama, Sport

77 Metascore

Transgender high school athletes from across the country compete at the top of their fields, while also challenging the boundaries and perceptions of fairness and discrimination.

Director: Michael Barnett | Stars: Mack Beggs, Sarah Rose Huckman, Terry Miller, Ngozi Nnaji

Votes: 285

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.13.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: A movie about a trending national topic that's because a passion case for right wing homophobes who like to brag about how much their hurting trans kids by passing these soon to be obsolete laws banning them from playing sports. It's an eye opening inside look at a world most have never been. It's also not a black and white issue. This doc makes that very evident. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

16. Amy Winehouse: The Final Goodbye (2016 TV Movie)

Director: Maureen Goldthorpe | Star: Vicky Letch

Votes: 81

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.14.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: The only thing I knew about Amy Winehouse before watching this was she died young due to a drug overdose and she had once been a huge star. This cheaply made film resembles an extended TMZ episode but is actually a pretty darn good film. It's too bad the budget was so low they couldn't afford to have former family and friends speak on the tragedies that lead to Amy's untimely end. Still enjoyable and informative.

Votes: 219

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.14.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: An interesting doc that was basically shot in the span of five days. Documenting the preparations for one of the few ballet shows ever directed by a woman (yes it's ANOTHER industry dominated by white males). It's a show intended to highlight where ballet is going. A mixture of dance styles with traditional ballet as the backdrop. I enjoyed it as I knew next to nothing about the industry before this and after I felt like I was much more knowledgeable. A good film, like this, will do that.

18. The Mole Agent (2020)

Not Rated | 84 min | Documentary

69 Metascore

A private investigator in Chile hires someone to work as a mole at a retirement home where a client of his suspects the caretakers of elder abuse.

Director: Maite Alberdi | Stars: Sergio Chamy, Romulo Aitken, Marta Olivares, Berta Ureta

Votes: 9,506

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.15.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: For me this was a long awaited watch as I only became aware of this film (like most others) when it received a nomination for Best Doc Feature at the 2021 Oscars. It's definitely a most unusual doc that some might say is scripted because it's THAT good. It's also an odd feature as it's about an older man (mid 80's) voluntarily entering into a retirement home to try and unearth evidence of alleged abuse. The fact that he finds none is really not relevant as the movie is much more about the characters the man encounters. It's a touching portrait of people who've been mostly forgotten by their families (that's typically why people place relatives in nursing homes) and yearning for love and companionship. The current IMDb rating (7.6) is accurate and it's definitely worthy of the Oscar nom it received. Great stuff.

19. Bad Reputation (2018)

R | 93 min | Documentary, Biography, Music

66 Metascore

Documentary about rock star Joan Jett.

Director: Kevin Kerslake | Stars: Joan Jett, David Bowie, Evelyn McDonnell, Don Bolles

Votes: 1,449 | Gross: $0.15M

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.16.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: 95% of the fans of Joan Jett probably will not know the extent of the impact of her career. I certainly didn't till I watched this doc. My main exposure to her music was through the movie, the Runaways (which is excellent), but now having watched this I can include myself amongst her fans. She has my mad respect. This was also an excellent with some insightful commentary and great stories about the stuff that goes on behind the scenes. Watch The Runaways and then watch this for the REAL story.

20. The Waiting Room (III) (2012)

Not Rated | 81 min | Documentary

84 Metascore

Go behind the doors of an American public hospital struggling to care for a community of largely uninsured patients.

Director: Peter Nicks | Star: Sean Bennett

Votes: 903 | Gross: $0.24M

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.17.22 RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5) Commentary: Remember the old series on TLC called, "Untold Stories of the E.R."? If that series became a movie and didn't use actors and scripts this movie would be it. Following the daily trials of an understaffed, woefully under funded emergency room at a major urban hospital. The stories are gripping and the people featured are fascinating. This film ain't rocket science but sure is a nice slice of life.

21. Sex Appeal (2022)

TV-MA | 90 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

Avery, a teenager with a tendency towards perfectionism, enlists her friend Larson to help her prepare for her first time with her long-distance boyfriend.

Director: Talia Osteen | Stars: Mika Abdalla, Jake Short, Fortune Feimster, Margaret Cho

Votes: 3,182

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.18.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: Another teen "sex" comedy that wants us to feel all romantic about the two leads when it's rather obvious the two have little chemistry. Still, despite a rather accurate IMDb rating, this was a fun film for the first hour or so. Then it became a game of will they or what they and that got old. It's like he's in love with her but when she falls in love with him then he's suddenly NOT in love with her anymore. Then she realizes she doesn't love him after all. What? While it has it's hilarious moments the story ultimately falls apart at the end due to unimaginative writing. Should have been soooo much better.

22. Enemies of the State (2020)

103 min | Documentary

74 Metascore

An American family becomes entangled in a bizarre web of secrets and lies when their hacker son is targeted by the U.S. government, making them all ENEMIES OF THE STATE.

Director: Sonia Kennebeck | Stars: Joel Widman, Stuart Anderson, Nemo Baletic, Angela Barbosa

Votes: 784

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.29.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: Here is a story not about a man named Jed but about a family that lies through their teeth to protect their idiot son. He was allegedly an early member of the legendary group, Anonymous, and ran a server for the whistleblowers to upload files onto. Or did he. The family claims they were being harassed by the U.S. government because of a USB memory stick and the secrets with in it. Problem is, like most conspiracy theories you need actual evidence to prove any allegations and they never have that. (though if you're a Trumper or visitor to gateway pundit you don't need that you just predicting it'll be true until it blows up in your face. Then you pretend it never happened). The is well made, better than most fictional dramas, and should be seen just because it's that entertaining. Recommended.

23. Vice Versa: Chyna (2021)

90 min | Documentary

The rise and fall of wrestler Joanie Chyna Laurer, whose life was cut short in 2016. Her contributions to the WWE business and her pioneering work and her gripping tale of the "comeback" starting in 2015.

Directors: Marah Strauch, Erik Angra | Stars: Anthony Anzaldo, Gerry Blais, Chyna, Masahiro Chôno

Votes: 321

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.20.22 RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5) Commentary: Not every superstar on a downward spiral can be saved like Scott Hall or Jake Roberts. Some had been on a perpetual downhill slide for two decades and refused help from all takers. Like Chyna. Who typically then blamed the person for her own failings and cut them out of her life. This film is so sad but illuminating as to what ended up happening to one of the greatest female wrestlers ever. The movie itself contains shocking revelations about both Chyna and the producers. And relives one of the dumbest moments in wrestling history when Triple Big Nose (HHH) claims that because he's a father now (I feel sorry for that kid) he can't see Chyna being elected to the WWE Hall of Fame BECAUSE his kid might find out Chyna did porn. Yet they just elected a guy (undeserving) that used to play a PIMP on their TV with real whores following him to the ring. The stupidity, jealousy (of HHH/Stephanie) is astounding and pathetic.

It's still a fine doc that serves as a reminder about the ravages of mental illness and constant drug abuse. We miss you, Chyna. FUCK YOU HHH.

24. The Filth and the Fury (2000)

R | 108 min | Documentary, Biography, Music

82 Metascore

A film about the career of the notorious punk rock band, the Sex Pistols.

Director: Julien Temple | Stars: Paul Cook, Steve Jones, John Lydon, Glen Matlock

Votes: 6,206 | Gross: $0.61M

Watched via: DVD (Samsung) Date: 01.20.22 RE-watchability: 1.5* (out of 5) Commentary: A doc with no narrator can sometimes be a good thing but not in this case. The story of the infamous Sex Pistols punk rock band is told by the band members themselves and boy is it hard to follow. This is a tough watch due to the sometimes indecipherable accents, seemingly unrelated detours that feature home video footage of the band rambling incoherently. And the most annoying thing had to be the surviving band members appearing in black outs for some reason. Are they that ashamed? Pretty sure this is a straight donate.

25. Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (2022)

PG | 87 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

46 Metascore

After one experiment, Johnny turns into a monster and everyone else becomes human. Now it has to be seen whether they will be able to reverse this experiment.

Directors: Derek Drymon, Jennifer Kluska | Stars: Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kathryn Hahn, Jim Gaffigan

Votes: 39,061

Watched via: Amazon Prime Date: 01.21.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: I expected more from an Amazon Studios production than this. It was still a fun movie with a story that I enjoyed but there was plenty missing. Most glaringly, the voice cast, with exception of Selena Gomez, is all new and sub par (and Gomez wasn't all that great). Still it was nice to see the old gang back together for another fun filled adventure. I'm not sure if a 5th outing is a good idea at this point but if they make it I will likely watch.

26. For Ahkeem (2017)

Not Rated | 90 min | Documentary

75 Metascore

Watched via: Hulu Date: 01.22.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: A personal journey of a young girl trying desperately to overcome her surroundings, a unexpected pregnancy and crime all around her to graduate high school. It's a darn good doc that explores what life is like for inner city youth in St. Louis during the Michael Brown case. Though I found the ending a bit contrived and hard to believe it was still nice to see anyway.

27. Giant Little Ones (2018)

R | 93 min | Drama

67 Metascore

Two popular teen boys, best friends since childhood, discover their lives, families, and girlfriends dramatically upended after an unexpected incident occurs on the night of a 17th birthday party.

Director: Keith Behrman | Stars: Josh Wiggins, Darren Mann, Taylor Hickson, Maria Bello

Votes: 9,786 | Gross: $0.18M

Watched via: Amazon Prime Date: 01.24.22 RE-watchability: 2.5** (out of 5) Commentary: Another movie that loses it's way about halfway through when the initial tension of are they gay or not runs it's course. The writers spend an exorbitant of time obsessing over a stolen bike and in the end it makes little to know difference to the plot (not does any of it make a lick of sense). Personally I enjoyed the first 50 minutes or an hour of it and then the stupidity started. The ending was especially silly. I won't be adding this one to my permanent collection and cannot recommend it.

28. Rumble (2021)

PG | 95 min | Animation, Comedy, Family

Votes: 8,780

Watched via: Amazon Prime Date: 01.24.22 RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5) Commentary: A wrestling based animated film that has a pretty solid story, some gorgeous animation and lots of LOL moments. you can't really go wrong with watching this one with the kiddos. Or, like me, watching it because it kept popping in your suggestions. Recommended.

29. Peter and the Farm (2016)

Unrated | 91 min | Documentary, Biography

80 Metascore

A documentary on Peter Dunning, the proprietor of Mile Hill Farm in Vermont who has isolated himself away from his family and often suggests to the filmmakers to make his own suicide a narrative device.

Director: Tony Stone | Star: Peter Dunning

Votes: 885 | Gross: $0.02M

Watched via: Amazon Prime Date: 01.25.22 RE-watchability: 1.5* (out of 5) Commentary: So halfway through this doc we find out why it was made: Peter has a drinkin' problem and wants to kill his crazy self and invites a film crew to document it all. Yeah that's what a sane person would do. Most of the rest of the film is Peter yammering on and on about topics unrelated to anything else in the film. We are left to surmize that Peter's three wives and kids left because of the drinking but this is never confirmed as the kids/wives are mentioned only a few times with no elaboration to explain anything. UGH. I'd rather pretend I never watched.

I enjoyed it even though it did give me the feeling I was watching an episode of Nick News from the early 2000's instead of a film. The film surely didn't win any awards but it does present the story in a pleasing tone with some insightful interviews. Ones that are surprisingly frank at times. Enjoyable despite some small drawbacks.

Watched via: HDD (Digital Copy) Date: 01.27.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: A darn good silent film about a couple running from the law and other bad guys. The love story is pretty under played and pops up out of nowhere (there is no sexual tension between the leads) but it actually does work pretty well once the focus is placed on it. The ending took a little bit for me to wrap my mind around but I came to the conclusion that it was probably the one that made the most sense for the plot. If you like silent films check this one out.

Watched via: HDD (Digital Copy) Date: 01.28.22 RE-watchability: 4.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: A truly funny teen out-all-night flick starring a bunch of unknowns. But boy you wouldn't know it by watching. Good enough to make the movie interesting, endless one-liners (almost all of which are funny), relatable characters that actually grow a little during the journey and a satisfying ending (that's not even a little bit of a surprise). The first half of the film is especially funny as Nina (the hilarious Izzy Weaver) steals most every scene while drunk. And yes the second half does slow down a little with Nina being hungover it allowed for all the characters to get some screen time. I am not complaining.

I went into this movie with the simple hope of it being good because it's been a while since I saw a movie like this. And I was rewarded with a hilarious, heartfelt and ultimately very satisfying movie that will be added (immediately) to my re-watch list. Good stuff. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This is one of those films. Pay no attention to the IMDb rating (sometimes people just don't get it) this movie is far better than it suggests. The main love story is sweet, while being hilarious and filled with twists and turns. The two leads are magnificent (as is the little sister). And the ending is pretty perfect. Go see it now.

Yes the man behind this damn fine film started out on youtube and this is his first full length presentation. Damn fine job too. Picked a great topic, conducted some really good interviews (many of the most important players) and told the complete story. You can't really ask for more from a rookie director/filmmaker. It's a very enjoyable tale that's made all the better if you followed the young man on youtube before hand and knew he had mad talent. 2 thumbs WAY up.

This feature is so good because it has the interviews with the people who called the shots. And it not only shows the rise but the historic fall that came quickly there after. A fantastic film that is entertaining from the first moment to the closing credits. I love films where about history so this one was right up my alley.

While that may never come to be it's still fantastic to have this new romp to enjoy. It's your usual Tom and Jerry beat each others brains out, then team to take on the baddie and end up helping someone out plot. Followed by a Happy ending. And that's exactly what you have here. And it's glorious. When you have a winning formula like this (or in Scooby-Doo!) you don't mess with it. Because people like ME will take all of it we can get. Loved it.

Watched via: HDD (Digital Copy) Date: 02.04.22 RE-watchability: 3*** (out of 5) Commentary: I really do think that John Hughes thought he could continue this series, and it's unrivaled success at the box office, with an all new cast if he were the writer. Sadly, he was wrong. While the new lead is funny at times he lacks that magic that made the original films so great. About the only thing that was truly funny about this was the final moments and what he did to the baddies. Some of this stuff rivaled the originals. But overall this outing was just missing that special spark. It felt flat for most of the film. I still enjoyed it but I can't say it's gonna be on my re-watch list anytime soon.

This movies producers picked a nice mix of seniors to feature from the lady who thinks life is now a party to the drifter trying to land a rich wife to the lady who wishes she could just go home. It's riveting to watch. It's nicely paced and very well edited so that it keeps you drawn into the story from the beginning to the end. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'd actually never heard of most of the artists featured (surprising I know) and there's a good reason why...several of them aren't very good. Still it's fun to watch their battles to become respected and try to achieve financial success in this crowded field. Regardless of my opinion on rap in general this is still a pretty darn good doc. Check it out.

Commentary: The plot twist near the end may catch some (not a lot) by surprise but other than that this is about as ho hum of a murder mystery as you can possibly get. Has the feel of a BBC TV movie from the 1970's with less production values. The script is decent but nothing to write home about and the overall quality is meh! Middle of the road all the way. Worth a pickup at DT but not much more.

Commentary: This is one of those movies that make you re-think the idea of ever buying another DVD/Blu-ray from DT. It was that horrible and that boring. The main plot makes no sense is never fleshed out (how exactly is this couple planning to scam anyone?) nor is it explained until the devil shows and rapes the female lead (and of course the writer/director is a man...with a rape fetish). I'm not at all surprised. Sadly that was one of the few moments of interest in this otherwise sleep inducing snore fest that should be burned at the fucking stake. Avoid like Covid.

Watched via: DramaCity Date: 02.11.22 RE-watchability: 2.5** (out of 5) Commentary: A drama from South korea that is as curious as it is interesting. The stars of the film spend way more time talking about random topics than actually trying to take pictures of the "end of the world" (which was never really explained). I can't say I'd watch it again, or want to own it but it was certainly worth a one time watch. Strange movie.

Who ran out on his family not once but numerous times. And then when financial success was on the doorstep (despite his stupidity) he chooses to run away for...reasons! The film itself is very entertaining, well acted, smartly written and well directed. Doesn't feel like it's 2 and a half hours long. A really enjoyable biopic that tells the life story of a man who was an idiot.

Votes: 29

Watched via: DVD Date: 02.13.22 RE-watchability: 1* (out of 5) Note: Bought at the Dollar Tree. Commentary: Even a large allowance for the fact that this was a first film for almost everyone involved does not excuse the horrific shit show I just watched. Not a single actor in this film was convincing. Though Julie Tronchin (Summer) was probably the best (not exactly a compliment) that's a really low bar. The on screen performances were only the most visible problem.

The flick is devoid of actual laughs, the sound is hilariously bad, the editing is even worse and the hockey action is unconvincing. It's just a really bad film. Worse than many student films.

Highlight: One of the worst moments (and there was plenty) was the scene between the American and Canadian coach where they decide to become a joint unit to play Sweden (stupid plot twist). The American coach lists 3 U.S. states (Utah, west Virginia & Rhode Island) and the idiot Canadian coach claims they don't really exist even though the American coach was portrayed as the stupid one. Jeez.

Votes: 856

Watched via: DVD Date: 02.13.22 RE-watchability: 1* (out of 5) Note: Bought on Ebay. Commentary: One of the final films of the career of Shirley Temple is this winner which actually starred Clifton Webb. While Temple is not at her comedic best (she does seem a bit bored) she's turns in an enjoyable performance that plays perfect counter part to the outright silliness of Clifton Webb's Mr. Belvedere. He's basically a one man show for much of the early part of the film and we are rewarded for watching him. He's simply hilarious and makes everyone around him so much better (even an old pro like Temple). Enjoyable from the opening credits to the closing scene.

Note: I do believe this is the one and only time in Temple's career that she played a mother.

Votes: 306

Watched via: DVD Date: 02.14.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Note: Bought at the Dollar Tree. Commentary: You'd think at first glance this might be a Hallmark film with it's title and setting but surprisingly it's not. There's no cheesy romance between two WHITE c-list actors, nor is their a cozy all WHITE small town as the setting. This film does have a romance but it's not nearly as cheesy as the ones in those other movies. And this one shines particularly when Brian Dennehy and Fred Dalton are on-screen. It's much better than the current IMDb (4.4) rating suggests. Great to see Ashley Johnson in a leading role for a change.

Votes: 2,616

Watched via: HDD (Digital Copy) Date: 02.15.22 RE-watchability: 5***** (out of 5) Commentary: This movie is as close to perfect as you can get. A beautiful coming-of-age love story that actually focuses on the slow bond that forms between the teenagers and we get to watch as they actually fall in love. It's so not what I expected. And was so much better than I had any right to expect. The leads are magnetic, their chemistry is palpable and the climax of the film, while a bit contrived (and doesn't really resolve anything) was still the perfect ending. A happy ending.

So if you're one of those fans of lesbian cinema that has to have the usual subplot that spends a 3rd of the runtime building up the villain only to see him or her walk away scott free in the end you're out of luck. This one was smart enough to realize you don't need drivel like that.

Watched via: DVD Date: 02.15.22 RE-watchability: 2.5** (out of 5) Note: Bought at the Dollar Tree. Commentary: I typically enjoy vignette movies like this but this one just seemed to keep dragging on without anything being resolved. I can't say it was exactly a waste of time watching but I also can't say it was time well spent. Actually it was neither. It was just kind of THERE. The stories were mostly solid and the acting was quite good (look at the cast and you'd expect nothing less) it's just too bad the writers didn't feel like being more decisive in their decisions about the characters final outcomes. Good but not good enough to add to my collection.

51. The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1981)

Commentary: I used to say a long time ago that I can't, for the life of me, figure out how Lily Tomlin became such a huge star and then I watched this movie...and I totally get it now. The world is playing a joke on her and we're all in on it, right? Or maybe she's playing a joke on us by starring in such horrifically bad movies as this craptastic feature. The plot is just plain stupid, the acting is decent but kind of cringey and the whole production wants to be a Disney like fairy tale but fails miserably. Tomlin is, at times, funny but not nearly as much as she needed to be to pull this monkey'd mess across the finish line. What an awful waste of a dollar.

Headlined by a cast of virtual unknowns except for Julie Bowen (as a grandmother) who isn't the star but certainly gives the movie star power and it's much needed emotional center. While the real star is Gemma Brooke Allen (who is rock solid) in a breakout role as a girl searching for clues about her late parents. So many cool characters, a great script, good direction and fantastic visuals made for a winner that not only joins my permanent collection but also jumps near the top of re-watch list. RECOMMENDED.

Watched via: HDD (Digital copy) Date: 02.17.22 RE-watchability: 3*** (out of 5) Note: Bought at the Dollar Tree. Commentary: I've previously watched a movie about the 85 Bears that was much more broad as it covered the building of the team from Ditka's arrival, the entire 85 season in detail (not just bits and pieces) and the aftermath (probably the most interesting part). This one chose a different route as it focused exclusively on the personalities of the team instead of the on-field play. The thing I liked most about this doc was the candid interviews that pretty much covered everything. A lot fun stuff here. Sadly that can't cancel out the absence of details about the 85 regular season. It's like it hardly even happened. Made the film a whole lot less enjoyable. Though it still gets a positive rating because it was never the less entertaining.

Watched via: DVD Date: 02.18.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Note: Bought at the Dollar Tree. Commentary: An ultra low budget poker movie with a terrible rating that, somehow, pleased me enough to give it both a solid rating and a good review. I'm not quite sure why this one gets a 2.8 (as of this writing) and movies that are much worse get a 7. The world is a weird place.

The most obvious take away from this movie is that the script is not top notch (still pretty good) and some of the acting is cringeworthy. But taken as a whole the movie entertained me. Ava Justin as Lisa was a standout as was the Alex character who was hilariously silly. And as a bonus the film threw in some liberal talking points on social issues just for fun. Kinda like the right wing "christians" do in their "faith" movies. And yes they were as out of place in this movie as they are in the craptastic "faith" movies.

Good characters and an alright story made for a movie that was worth way more than a dollar. A.K.A.: "Music Legends: Pam Tillis Live from Nashville" Watched via: DVD Date: 02.19.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Note: Bought at the Dollar Tree. Commentary: I really dislike having to search for 20 minutes or more for a title on IMDB because the copy of the film you bought is not listed due to it being re-released several years later under a different name. It can be very frustrating. Fortunately for me I can do the research and figure out the truth on 99% of these cases.

In this case the concert/doc was well worth the search because Pam Tillis is a blast from the past and a wonderful reminder of the early 90's country music boom. She was still in great form in the twilight of her career at the time of this taping in 2005. This brings back so many great memories and has a new recording of one of my favorite songs of all time, Maybe It Was Memphis. It also reveals something I long suspected about Tillis is she shares the sense of humor of her father (Country legend Mel Tillis) especially when she's teasing her family or the band. It was a true delight. Fantastic find for a dollar.

Watched via: HDD (Digital Copy) Date: 02.20.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: A movie that wants to be a Booksmart knock off and almost succeeds. It's still wildly entertaining with some fun performances from actors usually portraying second (or third) tier characters. The twist in this one though is the girls are high for most of the movie. Which leads to complications that you've seen in a hundred other similar movies but they are still laugh out loud funny. The film is framed as a letter to a college admissions board (which I really liked) and that adds just a touch of originality. Not sure I'd recommend but I would discourage anyway at the same time.

A comedy about teens making stupid mistakes. It usually has some good laughs with a pedestrian storyline and it's all basically just fluff. This is what I was expecting for this one. I didn't get it to say the least. This one attempted to treat the subject with seriousness and even had a surprising ending that was somewhat haunting. It was still better than I thought it'd be. I was just surprised by it's tone, especially near the end of the movie, it was definitely more adult than her usual fare. A different kind of role for Victoria that hopefully she'll think more about doing.

You should know that this is a prequel that lays out the backstory of the Molly character that has appeared in several other horror films by the same producer. So if low budget DT horror finds are you thing you should keep an eye for this one. It's actually somewhat better than the horrific IMDb rating (3.2 as of this writing).

Commentary: One of those blind buys that you see at Redbox and decide to pick it up because it's probably gonna be pretty good. It actually was (as are most of the DC Universe Animated fare). This one, in my view, serves as an alternate origin story to the Batman only set against the backdrop of the disco decade. Which is one of the films highlights. The story is solid, and different enough to make it original, the setting is fantastic and the script keeps it entertaining throughout. I'd recommend it to any Batman fan.

Commentary: Action movies are famous for oddball pairings as it's the "opposites attract" thing that makes the chemistry and the movie. The problem for this is that formula didn't quite workout. Brittany Snow (who I love) is just not a good fit for a violent action movie nor a good partner to the perfectly cast Dave Bautista. Casting though is only one problem for this film another is the storyline, which makes little to no sense, and has a bizarre ending that comes out of nowhere and is, to be blunt, just plain stupid. Pass as there are way better action films out there. This one ended up being a straight donate.

Commentary: Having never watched a single episode of the series, Courage the Cowardly Dog, I was kinda flying blind on this one. But knowing Scooby and gang were in town made this an instant purchase. There's a not a whole lot to really review as it's your standard Scooby film with a new co-star. The story is pretty good (though the plot seem to run thin near the movies conclusion). Though the addition of the Courage cast was a nice wrinkle and made this outing one of the funniest of the recent Scooby films. I'd think most all Scooby fans will get a kick out of this.

Commentary: An underrated family film that's actually pretty well written even if the plot is completely silly. There's plenty of laughs to be had, a ton of cuteness and (most) of the plot makes sense. In a film like this it's hard to ask for more. I didn't know that most of the leading cast where in their first leading roles until viewing the trailer (which I rarely watch before hand) so that makes the movies quality even more surprising.

Honestly, I picked this one up to fill out a $2.00 of Redbox offer and just hoped it wouldn't turn out to be another Bernie the Dolphin (thank god it didn't) and was pleasantly surprised at a fun movie that, despite some flaws, came off as roundly entertaining. Good stuff.

This one probably isn't his best but it could hold it's own if it's measured against those others. He not only produced the movie but gave a fine performance as it's star and central figure. Often hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt as well. The story is one that has many surprises like instead of immediately dismissing the thought of a romantic relationship between Crystal and Haddish, due to the age difference, it was left to linger in the air. Very smart. The film had to have a bitter sweet end for it to make any sense and it did. I know some may disagree but I loved Tiffany Haddish in this and her chemistry with Crystal was great. An enjoyable movie that was well worth the rental price.

A rented it several times, along with purchasing it once, but had to return it every time when it either failed to play or my optical drive in the laptop refused to read it. Sooooo, finally, I managed to get a copy and...oh man...what a waste. An attractive young cast with a good script could be the start of a new YA franchise. This is NOT that movie. Yes the cast is attractive, but their acting is wooden (and that's being kind), the concept is preposterous, the script is boring, silly and just plain dumb and the entire enterprise just smells of a studio cash grab. It's a whole lot worse than it's already pedestrian rating would suggest.

The producers managed to create a unique world that serves as a setting for a fun action movie that really had almost everything you'd want. Action (naturally), comedy (of course) and a cool cast of characters that beg for a sequel.

It probably doesn't need to be said but no one could have possibly pulled off the role of GUY other than Ryan Reynolds. He was pitch perfect in this role. Just simply a great movie that I'd HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

It literally went from a 6.5 to 4.5 in just a matter of a half hour. And unfortunately the 3rd act really didn't improve much, if at all. Though it was nice to see some favorites from the past land roles in this (Jackie Earle Haley, Joel Osment) so that made it a bit better. I just wish the story would have made more sense. Still a decent watch but it's IMDb rating (4.8 as of this writing) is probably accurate.

To the point where you finally just pick it up to say you've seen it. Kind of the situation here only first I made a digital copy out of it for easier viewing. The film itself is just OK it's nothing special or magical (though it does have it's moments). The cast is rather subpar (especially Colin Firth), but the visuals are something to write home about too bad the ending is rather stupid and pointless. Which, to be honest, the entire movie feels that way after having watched it. While I did enjoy it I still have to admit that the entire production seemed to be missing that one or two elements that made it anything memorable.

Her skills are so-so. She does though come off as natural on camera so there's potential. Too bad the movie itself was annoying. Although I really liked the supernatural elements late in the movie (especially the girl texting her dead mom) several other elements were just mind bogglingly stupid. One of those was the horrible mother who found God (the GOP Jesus version) and decided she was no longer a horrible mother because, "God forgave me", and then insisted that her daughter (the one she had treated like shit for years) must forgive her now as well (this scene has to be seen to be believed). Only in the world of right wing Christians is this a story that actually makes any bit of sense.

Such as characters from animated shorts (like Looney Tunes) releasing a full length film such as this. While this film is not fantastic (despite the rating) it's not bad either. It's just kind of 80 minutes or so of pure joy which leaves you wanting more laughs at the end. You really enjoyed it you just wish there had been more to it. That's exactly how I felt about this one. A second looney feature, that also starred Daddy Duck (Fantastic Island), was much funnier (if for no other reason than to hear Yosemite Sam cuss) but you should still make your best effort to see both. Good stuff.

That matters little as you'll likely forget that as you battle to keep awake from boredom of the rehashed tales included in this snoozer. They really didn't even try to find any new, or interesting, angles to include. They pretty much just mailed it in for this one. Halfway decent movie but could have been loads better. Silly concept.

Watched via: HDD (Digital Copy) Date: 03.13.22 RE-watchability: 4.5**** (out of 5) Commentary: Kurt Warner was the reason I began watching again in the early 2000's when he and the St. Louis Rams were the "Greatest Show on Turf" for one magical season that resulted in a Super Bowl victory. I figured all the way back then that some day someone would try and make a movie about his life. It took many years longer than I thought but here it is...FINALLY.

Boy was it worth the wait. Oscar nominee worthy story, superior casting, great story and visuals. The football action is believable and there's lot of it. It truly has it all. Though the "God, God, God" stuff was a bit much at times you understand it in the context of the film (based on a true story). The only minor flaw was the lack of screen time for Warner's step daughter in the film who seemed like an after thought as the flick gave all of the air time to the relationship between Kurt and the step-son. Rather disappointing. Otherwise I do believe I'd be willing to give this sports masterpiece a 5***** rating.

Wanting more a few days later I watched, Lucy and Desi: A Home Movie from 1993. Which is basically the title you're reading about now only outdated. It's the same subject with largely the same commentaries only updated. Though this one was much more interesting. Seemingly people aren't as guarded these days about the beloved couple (probably because so much info has come out in the years since the original doc in 1993) that gave people the freedom to tell the honest truth. This made watching it like a breath of fresh air. Good movie. Especially if you loved Lucy or Desi.

And it's, admittedly, a mixed bag usually. Some are horrific trainwrecks and others are fantastic. Still others are pleasant surprises in that they are simply a solid film that was well cast and nicely written. This is one of those films. It's clear to see that the two leads are not professional actors as they, at times, struggle to maintain their character. But all things considered they both did a great job. The same can be said for the writer/producer(s) in that while some of the creative decisions were questionable the talent was on full display and some allowance can be given for small mistakes. It's was still a good movie with some charming characters.

Watched via: Amazon Prime Date: 03.17.22 RE-watchability: 3*** (out of 5) Commentary: Can anyone, anyone at all, explain to me why the fuck they made a movie about a wannabe cowboy/country music star? And then that half-baked idea gets stuffed with some unrelated GARBAGE about that loser Chris Kyle (the American Sniper "hero") to fill out the runtime. This movie was utterly confusing.

Though to be honest Cody is a talented story teller and made a great choice for that ability alone. Problem is his story is so filled with holes (why did the first Warner contract offer fall through? Why was the day he got a new contract the "worst day of his life") that it leaves more questions than answers. Which means the runtime is shortened considerably and needs to be filled with some unrelated trash about Chris Kyle (who is in no way related to Cody Johnson, his family or his story...they've never even met). UGH. Of course one also wonders why Cody got the movie in the first place. His list of accomplishments begins with headlining some festivals in Texas and ends with having a couple of MINOR hits. The title song of the feature wasn't even a hit. It's comical. And that's his complete list.

Though that all pales in comparison to the confusing decision to have a story about Chris Kyle in the middle of this, other wise unrelated, film. What in the living hell possessed the idiot-in-charge to produce that far-right vomit? Again, to remind you, Chris Kyle has never met Cody Johnson, they have no relationship, they are not kin, they have no connection in anyway and Cody Johnson does not even mention him in anyway throughout his commentary. So why was this included? Shaun Silva is a fucking moron.

Because if you pick wrong and choose a focus point that has no charisma or ability to tell a story (or refuses to divulge details of his/her story because of...reasons) then you end up with a trainwreck of a movie that you then must fill out with unrelated garbage (See Dear Rodeo: The Cody Johnson Story). You'd been better off not even making it.

Or you can hit paydirt and convince a character (in every sense of the word) to come forward and tell his story. With every ugly detail laid out so you can full understand the complexity of the man's amazing life. While I'd never heard of the man prior to this viewing that didn't really change anything. It was still an adventure getting to know his crazy ass. The film is well constructed with plenty of insightful commentary from our star to make it well worth viewing. Really enjoyed learning a little more about a style of music that is pretty much foreign to me. If you're a W.A.S.P. fan you definitely need to check this one out ASAP

The film is supposed to be about a woman making a doc about homosexuality in small town, USA (of what turns out to be Iowa) but that storyline amounts to nothing more than a few scenes with people we know nothing about and it pretty much goes nowhere. The main plot involves a romance that kinda works and kinda doesn't. And of course we also get (and since the director is a man you should have expected it)...a sexual assault. It's not a low budget garbage LGBT movie without an attempted rape. Fortunately for the attempted rapists not only does he get away with it but he gets his bike returned at the end because our "heroine" (the dim bulb lead character) has not a brain in her head (neither does our useless director). Movie sucks. Avoid.

Especially Shirley in her "romance" that features her "first kiss" (which is not even a kiss) but she was still a great lead. The main story is pretty standard stuff but provides a good framework for the talented young cast to entertaintain for the entirety of the runtime. The script for this one doesn't win any awards but it is funny, believable and, most importantly, entertaining. While I enjoyed this movie, though it's sequel is slightly better, it did feel like the writers stretched for time near the end and made the whole gag of Corliss not telling wear a bit thin. Still I'd recommend it for any Temple fan looking to see her in a more adult role.

Typically Elizabeth Olsen lights up the screen with her quirky coolness and while we do see sparks of it in this one it's held down by her lack of story. That centers on a bored Dakota Fanning and a wooden male lead (who cares what his name is). The story twists and turns till it doesn't make a lot of sense but ends with the "best friends" fighting only to make up at the end (remember I said it had a lot of cliches?). So nothing original but definitely watchable. If you're a completist on films for either Fanning or Olsen you NEED to watch this otherwise don't bother.

Which is just completely ridiculous.

Meanwhile, this fun little film told a basic story involving two sisters learning about their father AFTER his death and coming to grips with their own body issues. It's bright, funny (at times), some times dramatic and well written. I enjoyed it for what it was.

P.S. Though I do have to admit that if the 12 year old me had seen this and taped it on VHS (yes I am that old) I'd have probably watched it about a thousand times till the tape broke...cause the story is that good. :)

Watched via: Kanopy. Date: 04.02.22 RE-watchability: 0 (out of 5) Commentary: It's sad when a movie starts out strong but as the second half begins you can tell it's visibly losing steam as the writer/director stretches the already thin plot to cover the expected runtime (which could have been reduced by 10 minutes to improve the film). Compounding that is making a creative decision that, in the context of the films plot, makes absolutely no sense what so ever (the lead gets robbed and even though she takes away his knife and stabs him with it he STILL takes her stuff. WTF? This plot twist must have been written in by a group that rides the short bus). Combine that with a predictable plot, few to no laughs, little tension and piss poor direction and you get a movie with a lot of promise that fizzled out long before the end credits.

A portrait of unsung Hollywood legend Scotty Bowers, whose bestselling memoir chronicled his decades spent as sexual procurer to the stars.

Votes: 1,806 | Gross: $0.46M

Watched via: Hulu Date: 04.05.22 RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5) Commentary: A doc that promises way more than it delivers. And what it delivers is mostly just a retreading of things that have long ago been reported (like Cary Grant and Randolph Scott being lovers) but still manages to entertain a great deal. Having a central figure that's a good story teller is always key and Scotty is certainly that. Though some of his claims may be questionable (Spencer Tracy being gay?) some of his others are probably spot on (Katharine Hepburn being a lesbian). It's a movie that just doesn't give you enough of any one thing to make it as good as it should have been. But it's still a damn good film.

Watched via: Hulu Date: 04.06.22 RE-watchability: 3*** (out of 5) Commentary: Harvey Weinstein is one of those political figures that becomes a boogeyman through mere association. He probably did very little actual donating to the people he was supposedly the benefactors of but his presense at events generated press coverage so in turn it works out for the candidate in question. This movie, which is not focused on that, still revealed that reality. I find that fascinating. The other stuff in the movie has been well documented and wasn't all that interesting. Well made, nicely crafted, few surprises and basically served as a platform for his victims to voice their stories. It worked. Too bad it wasn't all that interesting (like I said it was mostly just stories that have been repeated numerous other times). Still a pretty good doc.

Watched via: Hulu Date: 04.06.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: The trailer for this makes the movie seem better than the actual finished product (as they are designed to do). It even makes the leading couple seem plausible but I just don't get the appeal. A woman in her mid 30's dating an 18 or 19 year is not all that unusual but it is when the two have no chemistry. I could just never wrapped my mind around why Joey, a cute tomboy in her first serious relationship would be attracted to a woman who claims to be 35-ish looks 45-ish with three kids (or more) and sleazy perverted husband. Consider me mystified. The movie is fine. Nothing to really write home about. But there's also nothing that really jumps out at you as bad. The ending is even decent. Just the main pairing that never really clicked with me.

Note that I've watched several before that bored me to sleep but not this one. This film actually mixed several genres pretty well and crafted a story that kept me in my seat for the entirety of the run. It was fun, exciting with great visuals that made the, already solid, story even better. I'll keep an eye out for more anime going forward.

Watched via: DVD Date: 04.10.22 RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5) Commentary: A classic Disney Kurt Russell romp with lots of silly special effects and the hilarity caused by said effects. It's actually the 2nd in the Dexter Riley trio of movies that were produced. And it's clearly the best of the bunch. Featuring the best performance of the series by the Dean ("Tell them not to touch me!"). It was also the best story of the series. Disney seemed to do a bunch of movies using the invisible gimmick around this time and this is one of the best. The script was laugh out loud funny, with some solid performances and it's an instant add to the re-watch list. Very funny.

Watched via: DVD Date: 04.13.22 RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5) Commentary: Thone is pretty fantastic. Highly recommended from a major connoisseur of lesbian flicks. I originally found this gem back in 2004 when I was one of the few people in my area that owned a DVD burner. I rented movies from Blockbuster by mail (like original Netflix) and made my own copies before sending them back. This was one of the best rentals ever. A nicely paced, well crafted, multi-layered drama (with a good subplot) described as a "thriller" (it's not) but is wildly entertaining. The ending, while it could have been better, was nearly perfect as that would have been my reaction had all of this happened to me. Only I doubt I'd have let her live (if I were female and a lesbian in love). CHECK THIS OUT.

Watched via: DVD Date: 04.14.22 RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5) Commentary: A family comedy starring longtime Disney staple Dean Jones. A star who win given a good, like this one, could turn in a performance that will be long remembered. I wouldn't say this one is a classic but it was an enjoyable film with lots of laughs, beautiful scenery and a story that contained no (despite what is suggested by the title) silly special effects or gimmicks. It's just great fun straight from the Disney factory.

One minor complaint I have is the storyline's twist near the end where Dean Jones love interest becomes the jockey instead of the daughter. I didn't really care for that. They spent most of the first half of the film building the daughters character as a up and coming champion and then just dropped it in favor of another character. Kind of annoying.

Still a solid Disney film that deserves a higher rating than it currently has (6.2).

Watched via: DVD Date: 04.15.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: Another Tim Allen movie that is a clear example of how good he was good in his prime. This movie won't win any awards (it certainly didn't) but it was still a fun action flick about kids becoming superheroes. Good casting (especially Allen, Chevy Chase and Rip Torn), writing that mostly made sense and a nice balance of kids humor mixed with some more adult stuff. Definitely a movie I'd watch again.

Watched via: DVD Date: 04.16.22 RE-watchability: 4**** (out of 5) Note: Bought at the Dollar Tree. Commentary: Plain and simple this is a love letter to one of America's greatest innovators and inventors, George Westinghouse. A man who should be much more famous than Thomas Edison. This film touches upon the numerous inventions and innovations by him along with the many created by employees of his. The film is definitely well produced but it does avoid any of the controversial stuff that could have been included. But it's still a fine film and one that I was VERY happy to scoop up at DT.

Watched via: DVD Date: 04.21.22 RE-watchability: 3.5*** (out of 5) Commentary: Seems like every few months there's another movie like this one that debuts only to soon be forgotten. The whole bikes-across-town theme has gotten pretty popular. Titles like Good Boys (which is a more adult version) and Madison Baker Was Here (an all girls version and much funnier on a smaller budget) are two that come to mind. This one could easily rival either of the aforementioned films if it were not for every important scene being crudely animated. This got to be soooo annoying by the end. Still, overall, it's a solid kids flick that adults could still enjoy. The IMDb rating (5.6) is a bit high though.
