Twenty years after winning a DGA award for The West Wing in the Dramatic Series category, guild president Thomas Schlamme found himself winning again tonight for the Aaron Sorkin series in the Variety/Talk/News/Sports – Specials slot.
Schlamme won for directing the HBO Max Oct. 15 reunion A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote. The special repped the first time in 17 years that the original cast of the Emmy- and Peabody Award–winning hit drama series came together with Sorkin and Schlamme for a special theatrical stage presentation of the “Hartsfield’s Landing” episode from the show’s third season. The West Wing stars Dulé Hill, Allison Janney, Rob Lowe, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford, and Martin Sheen reprised their roles from the episode. Additionally, the special had special guest appearance act breaks by When We All Vote co-chair Michelle Obama, President Bill Clinton and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

“See the whole board,” a chess-instructing Martin Sheen’s President Josiah Bartlet tells Rob Lowe’s Sam Seaborn in HBO Max’s A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote.
Originally uttered in 2002’s “Hartsfield’s Landing” episode of the multiple Emmy winning political drama, the Aaron Sorkin penned words hang heavy in the digital air during these final weeks before this year’s election. Filmed in recent weeks at downtown L.A.’s Orpheum Theatre, this newly visually streamlined version of “Hartsfield’s Landing” is a pretty easy sell that also provides a welcome relief and sobering reminder when language mattered and presidents were presidential, at least on network TV.

Nearly the entire original cast of The West Wing returned for a staging of the season three episode "Hartsfield's Landing," which followed the Bartlet administration while they waited for the first primary results and dealt with an international defense crisis at the same...

This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown is playing the role John Spencer made famous on The West Wing for the show’s election-themed reunion special that will air October 15 on HBO Max.
Spencer played Leo McGarry, the loyal and demon-battling Chief of Staff to Martin Sheen’s President Bartlett, on 155 episodes of Aaron Sorkin’s political drama, which was tied with Hill Street Blues for the most Emmys before Game of Thrones came along. Spencer died of a heart attack in 2005, in the middle of shooting the show’s seventh and final season.
Spencer won the supporting actor in a drama Emmy in 2002 among five nominations for playing McGarry. Brown has won a pair of Emmys, most recently as lead actor in a drama in 2017 for playing Randall Pearson on This Is Us.

The 2018 Emmy nominees for music composition for a series, original dramatic score, could hardly be more diverse: the grim cliffhanger episode of a popular cable serial; a small-combo score for a Marvel Comics heroine; the series finale of a fantasy based on Disney characters; an internationally flavored episode of a freshman broadcast series; an animated “Star Wars” spinoff; and Eastern colors for a cable series that imagines a world of sword-wielding warriors. What they all have in common, though, is how they enhanced complicated tales with emotional melodies.

Composer Ramin Djawadi received two nominations this year, his fifth and sixth noms since 2006. One was for “The Dragon and the Wolf,” the seventh-season finale for the HBO juggernaut, which included musical payoffs for themes hinted at earlier in the season: a love theme for Jon and Daenerys, and a horrifying march for the Army of the Dead.

The 2018 Emmy for Best Music Composition for a Series could realistically go to any of the six shows nominated. This year’s category, equivalent to Best Original Score at the Oscars, includes the following nominees: “Game of Thrones” (HBO), “Marvel’s Jessica Jones” (Netflix), “Once Upon a Time” (ABC), “Seal Team” (CBS), “Star Wars Rebels” (Disney Xd) and “Westworld” (HBO).
Ramin Djawadi has the honor of being one of few composers in Emmy history to earn two nominations in this category in the same year, for “Game of Thrones” and “Westworld.” Other nominees this year include past Emmy champs like Sean Callery, Mark Isham and W.G. Snuffy Walden.

At this year’s Emmys Ramin Djawadi is nominated twice for Best Music Composition for a Series, once for the “Game of Thrones” episode “The Dragon and the Wolf” and once for the “Westworld” episode “Akane No Mai.” The composer has now been nominated a total of six times, following prior bids for “Westworld” (main title theme in 2017), “Game of Thrones” (music composition in 2014), “FlashForward” (music composition in 2010) and “Prison Break” (main title theme in 2006), but he has yet to take home the big prize. Will this finally be his year?

This year’s Emmy race in the music categories takes on greater interest because a win in the song category could instantly give songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul an Egot, having already won Oscar, Tony and Grammy awards.

After Wendy Davis’ feat in Texas this week, we revisit an educational, emotionally rousing episode of The West Wing…
Like escrow, rutabaga and cooties before it, filibuster is a word many of us in the UK first heard on American TV. Specifically, we heard it from the mouth of C.J. Cregg, Allison Janney’s White House Press Secretary in The West Wing’s season two The Stackhouse Filibuster.
The episode, coming as it does five episodes before one of Us drama’s most sublime achievements – season two finale Two Cathedrals – is easy to pass over, indeed, it didn’t even make it onto our best-of list. In any other show, an entry so emotionally rousing might have sailed into a top ten, but The West Wing’s seven seasons have an embarrassment of riches and then some.

Even those of you who haven’t seen the final season of Friday Night Lights (raises hand and weeps) can appreciate this featurette from the soon-to-be-released DVD set. In fact — much like the show itself often does — this clip might give you goose bumps.
The exclusive sneak peek at the extras from Friday Night Lights: The Fifth and Final Season DVD (out April 5) takes us behind the music and into the brilliant mind of composer W.G. Snuffy Walden, the man responsible for the show’s iconic score. “We have these incredible performers and cast members who are able to say so much with looks,...

Today is Josh Charles’ 39th birthday. In a week, it will be exactly 12 years since Sports Night first aired on ABC. I can tell you these things because without Sports Night, I wouldn’t be the same person I am today. That’s how I know that television fandom changes lives.
I’m sure every one of you who comes to this site has heard it from someone at some point in your life: you watch too much television. Television is bad for you. Watching television will never amount to anything. I’ve heard it, my friends have heard it, my colleagues have heard it. That’s just the common belief in the world. It’s always upset me, because I’ve always known that it’s not true. With the anniversary of my fandom coming up, I’d like to share with you my story about how TV fandom changed my life,...

In my seriously random list on the seven best theme songs for current televisions shows the other day, I suggested that Explosions in the Sky was so good that you could put their music over almost any trailer, including Transformers, and you'd want to see the movie. (Note, also, that a commenter, Django, appropriately corrected me: The "Friday Night Light's theme song is actually W.G. Snuffy Walden, not Explosions in the Sky, who did the theme music for the movie. There is a striking similarity, however). That note aside, it doesn't change the facts: Explosions if the Sky makes everything better.
A mysterious reader, arrrghzi, put together a little trailer to prove the correctness of that assertion. So, for your enjoyment, here's the Transformers trailer with Explosions in the Sky music, and tell me it's not a movie you'd be ten times more inclined to see? And it's not even...
