Pepe. Carlo de Los Santos Arias on deciding on his voice: 'It was very simple and at the same time very difficult' Photo: Monte & Culebra One of the more experimental films in this year’s Berlin Film Festival competition, Nelson Carlo de Los Santos Arias’ Pepe sees a descendant of one of Pablo Escobar’s “cocaine hippos” ruminate in lugubrious tones about his own existence (and the end of it) while narrating a shaggy dog tale of the run-up to his death. Shot on a range of different film stock - and even including an animated Pepe in the style of Hanna Barbera - the film has a kinetic energy. Beyond Pepe himself, it also considers the impact of the hippos on the community that live near where Escobar’s farm was situated. Pepe won the Silver Bear for Best Director and we caught up with the director at the...

Stephen King's 1986 novel "It," for its overwhelming length and chronological sprawl, centers on a very simple and basic horror premise: clowns are terrifying. Perhaps there was a time in his planet's history when pale-faced, blue-haired ghouls with painted-on smiles and gin blossom encrusted noses were considered charming and delightful, but anyone who recalls that time died over a century ago. In 2022, many might readily agree that clumsy, "comedic" traditional circus buffoons are now merely greasy, manic, and threatening.
The monster in King's novel was an impossibly ancient shape-shifting Lovecraftian space deity that fed on human fear, with the ability to read human minds and manifest what they were most afraid of. Perhaps instinctually, the universal fear shape that this creature elected to take was that of a clown. It gave itself the name of Pennywise, and would hibernate in the sewers under Derry, Me, awakening every 27 years to frighten and eat children.

On Sept. 23, 1962, ABC debuted The Jetsons at 7:30 pm to television audiences. Like the Stone Age Flintstones, the futuristic animated family sitcom would become an enduring franchise for producers Hanna-Barbera. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review of the first episode, “Rosey The Robot,” is below:
The Jetsons is based on the same premise as The Flintstones, with the difference that the projection is in the future instead of the past. A family situation comedy, done in animation (and for those with color sets, color), the new Hanna-Barbera production should attract a good audience.
The jokes are familiar, but the setting gives them novelty and an added dimension, and cartooning is certainly suited to the TV screen.
Larry Markes’ script for the initial episode lightly sketched in the characters, mother, father, two children (boy and girl) of the Jetsons, a 21st Century family.

Video Version of this Article Photo: Adult Swim Cartoon Network Embraces its Adult Side On October 1st, 1992, Cartoon Network was launched, and in the coming years became a prominent face in entertainment. Labeled as the “best place for cartoons”, it was the first ever channel to have a specific 24-hour focus on animation. Consisting mainly of Hanna Barbera, MGM, and Warner Bros. series and shorts, the network slowly began to develop its original programming. Curiously enough, the first original program made by the network (Not counting the anthology series ‘The Moxy Show’) was ‘Space Ghost: Coast to Coast’, a show aimed at older audiences, in stark contrast to the very kid-centric cartoons that would follow later on during the decade. The network also dabbled in late-night programming with blocks of adult-oriented cartoons at this time, showing that even early on, Cartoon Network had more than just kids in mind. Things...

Cartoon stars Tom and Jerry were invented by Will Hanna and Joe Barbera in 1940 for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Tom, a mute cat, and Jerry, a mute mouse, starred in 114 theatrical shorts in their initial run from '40 to '58, and won seven Academy Awards. Thanks to the gods of Saturday morning, many Tom and Jerry shorts made their way into heavy rotation on television, and the ultraviolent animal combat films became deeply entrenched in the subconsciousness of several new generations. Tom and Jerry cartoons were typically pretty violent, often featuring new and interesting forms of abuse. Unlike the Coyote and Roadrunner cartoons, wherein a coyote was consistently harmed by his own hubris, Tom and Jerry cartoons were aggressive, even hateful. The characters loathed each other and were eager to do one another harm.

Roughly 50 years after the first episode of “The Jetsons” premiered, fans are gearing up to celebrate the birth of George Jetson, which according to lore, is July 31, 2022. But is that really his birthday?
On Thursday, a hawk-eyed fan pointed out that “someone is about to give birth” to the show’s main character, via a fan site listing the family patriarch’s exact birthdate.
The animated sitcom created by William Hannah and Joseph Barbera took place in the 21st century. Although no mention to a specific year was ever made in the show, promotional materials and articles from the time explained that it was set exactly 100 years in the future, according to MeTV.
Further evidence can be found in the episode “Test Pilot,” which aired Dec. 30, 1962. When Jetson’s doctor tells him he “should live to be 150,” he replies, “I’ve got 110 good years ahead of me!” – making him 40 years old.

If there was any doubt that the future is here (for better or worse), just remember that you are now living in George Jetson’s lifetime. Animation fans are celebrating an important milestone this weekend, as several savvy Twitter users noticed that the Spacely Sprockets employee, husband to Jane, and father of June and Elroy, is said to be born on July 31, 2022. That still gives us 40 years before the events of the show begin, so there’s no need to feel bad about not having flying cars yet.

Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound and Snagglepuss once ruled as crown princes of Saturday-morning TV. Now they are simply hoping to hold court among a legion of young streamers who watch video at any time they choose.
The cartoon characters are stand-outs from the Hanna-Barbera animation studio, which in the last half of last century accounted for the bulk of animated programing shown each Saturday morning on ABC, NBC and CBS. Creations ranged from the memorable to the decidedly less so. On Thursday, dozens of Hanna-Barbera characters are being set loose anew in “Jellystone!,” a new HBO Max series that seeks to revive several generations of animated favorites for an audience that may not know them all that well.
“This was definitely the biggest challenge I have had,” says C.H. Greenblatt, creator and executive producer of the new series, in an interview. “We were basically making ‘The Simpsons,’ season five, right out of the gate,...

WarnerMedia has revitalized one of the most iconic names in animation history with the establishment of London-based Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe.
The newly renamed facility, which was formerly known as Cartoon Network Studios Europe, operating from Great Marlborough Productions, will be WarnerMedia’s flagship television animation studio within Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. Animation (Wba) and Cartoon Network Studios (Cns), and Vanessa Brookman, head of kids Emea, will jointly head the studio.
The original studio, Hanna-Barbera Productions, was founded in 1957 by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera and created several iconic characters including Scooby-Doo, The Flintstones, The Jetsons and Yogi Bear.
“Earlier this year, we aligned two of the industry’s most powerful animation studios in Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios and their collaboration is already yielding some very exciting results,” said Tom Ascheim, president of Warner Bros. global kids, young adults and classics.

Photo: ‘Tom & Jerry’/HBO Max Tom and Jerry were a huge part of my childhood. In addition to the ‘Looney Tunes’ and ‘Merrie Melodies’ series with Bugs Bunny and Co., Tom and Jerry were among the first cartoons I ever saw when I was a kid. I still have fond memories of sitting in front of the TV and devouring the shorts whenever Cartoon Network ran marathons of the series whether it’s the original run from William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, the quirky Gene Deitch era (with its strong Eastern European animation feel), or the more stylized and comparatively subdued Chuck Jones years. There’s a reason the gray and white housecat and his brown mouse foil have endured for 81 years since their debut in 1940: they’re the quintessential cat-and-mouse team. There’s a simplicity to the premise: Tom tries to catch Jerry, plucky Jerry always outsmarts unlucky Tom,...

Everyone’s favorite cat and mouse are taking their antics to New York City. Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled a trailer for the upcoming “Tom and Jerry” movie, scheduled for a 2021 theatrical premiere.
While the titular characters are animated in similar styles as the original television show, the new film diverges from tradition with live actors and a real-world set. Chloë Grace Moretz stars as an event planner hired by a hotel to organize a wedding, but she’s also expected to remove a pesky mouse — Jerry — from his recent residence within the building’s walls.
Written by Kevin Costello and based on Joseph Barbera and William Hanna’s classic characters, “Tom and Jerry” revives the decades-old rivalry as Tom is enlisted to help remove Jerry from the premises before the date of the wedding arrives. Cartoon violence ensues as Tom contrives various schemes to sneak up on Jerry, only to fail on numerous occasions.

Chuck Jones then produced another 34 shorts with Sib Tower 12 Productions between 1963 and 1967. Three more shorts were produced,...

Animation producers William Hanna and Joseph Barbera had hit paydirt with their 1960 primetime cartoon The Flintstones, which was essentially The Honeymooners in prehistoric times, with Fred Flintstone in place of Ralph Kramden and Barney Rubble subbing for Ed Norton. Seeking a follow-up, the duo decided that they would look to the future in the form of the then-distant 21st century, which resulted in The Jetsons, a cartoon about America's first space-age family. The focus is on George Jetson, an employee of Spacely Space Sprockets, and much of the comedy came from interactions with his wife, Jane; daughter Judy, his boy Elroy, and their mutt with a speech impediment (think Scooby-Doo), Astro. The other aspect of the show was its look at the evolution of technology, presenting a world where virtually everything is automated, flying cars fill the skies, we talk on large screen video phones, and have robot servants — in many (though not all) ways,...

Warner Bros. is angling to reintroduce TV audiences to George Jetson, albeit with a substantial twist.
TVLine has learned exclusively that the studio is developing The Jetsons, a live-action sitcom remake of Hanna-Barbera’s beloved ’60s animated series about a family residing in the futuristic, outer-space utopia known as Orbit City.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson declined to comment, but sources confirm that the studio — which has hired Family Guy Ep Gary Janetti to shepherd the potential series — will begin shopping the multi-cam project around to broadcast and cable networks in the coming weeks. It is safe to say that The Flintstones will go down as one of the biggest pleasant surprises in the history of comics. When the first promo images were released for this along with the other Hanna Barbera series the majority of the world scoffed at the very idea of this project. While the other series like Scooby Doo Apocalypse have left a lot to be desired, Mark Russell and Steve Pugh’s Flintstones has been one of the best comics since its debut. It is a series that will only grow in notoriety as more people learn about its brilliance.
Issue twelve is a bittersweet moment as it marks the end of this fantastic book. Not wanting over extend this idea is admirable, but still, it is hard to let something so consistently good go. In reality the sharp social and political commentary that makes The Flintstones what it is could only last so long. Rarely do comics or really any form of entertainment end before there is a sharp dip in quality. Part of being a great creator is knowing when to move on to something new.
This issue works as a wrap-up of some of the major stories that have been building during these past twelve issues. A testament to the power of this series is how it crafted one of the most fulfilling narratives around a bowling ball and his relationship with a vacuum cleaner. Objects that were just cheap gags in the original cartoon where the heart and soul of this series, which ties into one of the biggest surprises of this last installment. For a series that was mighty critical of the human race and our society, this had a much more upbeat and optimistic outlook.
During the issue The Great Gazoo is giving his assessment on humanity and its downfalls but why there is reason to be hopeful. Within that framework we see Bam Bam and Pebbles attempting to better understand the conflict between science and religion. The result is one of the best explanation for the need for religion I have read. One that is not critical nor ignorant to its problems. The Church of Gerald has been a consistent source of humor but here it became something more.
Steve Pugh also needs to be praised for his work. No one else could have made this book except for him. That look that many people criticized at first was key in making the tone perfect. If this looked too cartoony it would not nearly be as effective and if it was too realistic it the irony would be absent. I truly hope these two work on so much more in the future.
If you are still hesitant to read this series get over that as quickly as possible. Go back to issue one and get ready to experience twelve issues of genius. This final issue may not be the best one so far but it is a fitting end to a special book. I can safely say we will never see a book like this ever again.

Walt Disney is a genius. Whether you like his movies or not is irrelevant. The work he did legitimizing animation as an art form has brought about many years of great movies and shorts from the likes of Disney, Warner Brothers, Hanna Barbera, and many others. He formed his own movie studio which has turned into a juggernaut, responsible for movies like Pulp Fiction from their Miramax Films brand, Toy Story from Pixar, Beauty and the Beast, and many others. He realized the importance of branding by opening his own theme parks, Disney Land and Disney World. So it begs to question why the last words Walt Disney ever wrote were "Kurt Russell".

Phil Gasmer, acid-dropper, screenwriter, guardian of the Holy Lance. Nice to meet you.
All kinds of interesting things came to light on DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 Episode 9, including Rip's whereabouts, the origin of the Legion of Doom, an alternative name for the Spear of Destiny and Mick Rory's feelings.
We were even left pondering something magnificently important: Where would you be without George Lucas?
This return leaned into what it does best by recognizing the inadequacies of what it has done before, paying heed to its comical strength and liberally splashing everything with some action sequences.
With the way the humor was dialed up on this one, it's almost a shame Legends won't be airing after Arrow going forward to truly balance out the light and the dark of the DC shows on The CW.

Here is an image to cherish: Guillermo del Toro, as a young boy, “watching a TV series on the floor, on my belly, with a glass of milk and a plate of cookies.” It represents more than just a pleasant memory for the director when it comes to “Trollhunters,” the new animated series he co-created for Dreamworks and Netflix. In crafting the story of Jim (played by Anton Yelchin, who tragically passed away earlier this year), a young man who gets chosen by a mystical amulet to serve as protector of a hidden troll kingdom, del Toro hopes to capture the spirit of the shows he grew up watching, including classic adventure series like “Jonny Quest.”

What's new this week in comics? Let's hit it with some Picks From The Rack.
This week on Picks From The Rack Jason takes a look at Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe #1 a new series that's a great jumping on point for fans if you want to get into the comics. Future Quest #4 is turning this whole DC Hanna Barbera thing into a convoluted mess to be honest. We don't need a new character every comic. Thunderbolts #4 has the team going against the Squadron Supreme and that can't be good. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #6 has some real problems for the team and all the Tommy mistrust my end as a matter of necessity. And lastly Ms. Marvel 10 is testing the mental fortitude of our heroine as she doubts her mission, her mentor, and her future as a hero. Be here next week for more Picks From The Rack.

So, in the mood for another feature-length doc on the “mouse house”? I’m referring to Mickey’s home base, the cartoon factory that is the Walt Disney Studios. It’s comprehensive archives have provided terrific stories in recent years, all informative and very entertaining. Let’s see, there’s Walt & El Grupo, about the Ww II South American trip. And The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story spotlighting that song-writing duo. Oh, and Waking Sleeping Beauty, which focuses on the late 1980’s revitalization of the feature animation department, is a must see. Only a few weeks ago, audiences were moved by the story of the Suskind family in Life, Animated. Now, here’s another terrific addition to that revered roster. The talented directing team of Michael Fiore and Erik Sharkley introduce us to a fascinating man well known to the world of cartooning, but now the general public will meet...

A wonderful trailer has been released for an upcoming documentary that revolves around Disney animator Floyd Norman. The doc is called Floyd Norman: An Animated Life, and it offers viewers an intimate journey through the life and career of Norman, who is described as the Forrest Gump of the animation industry and is a Disney legend.
The doc comes from filmmakers Michael Fiore and Erik Sharkey, and it seems to be one of those feel good documentaries. If you have any interest in animation and want a candid, behind the scenes look at what the animation industry is like, then this seems like a doc that you’ll want to check out.
Hired as the first African-American at Disney in 1956, Floyd worked on such classics as Sleeping Beauty and 101 Dalmatians, to name a few. In 1967, he was hand-picked by Walt Disney to join the story team on The Jungle Book.

Most of us have no doubt been enjoying the DC’s launch of Rebirth titles, but they have launched a line of Hanna Barbera titles as well. It started last month with Jonny Quest and this week we get the a modern take on the prehistoric family The Flintstones. The classic themes of the show are still present but are presented in a more mature fashion, especially Fred’s relationship with his boss Mr. Slate. Who without a doubt will be the one putting Fred into difficult situations going forward for his personal gain. The most interesting aspect of this book was that they made Fred and Barney war veterans (I don’t remember from the cartoon if it was ever mentioned if he was a soldier). This was established pretty early on in the issues so I wonder how much it will come into play going forward.

A new comic is raising awareness of stem cell donations. Please take a look.
A new animated comic from The Anthony Nolan Trust is hoping to encourage people – and young men in particular – to join the stem cell register. With a touch of Hanna Barbera to it, the comic – drawn by Rowan Caney – goes by the title of Donny And The Professor Cure Blood Cancer.
The series was inspired by Ethan Buttress, who became a 17-year old hero when he became one of the youngest people in the UK to ever donate stem cells to a stranger. By doing so, back in 2014, he gave a very ill child a fresh chance of life.
You can find the comic in full, here.

Artist Marco D’Alfonso is back with another humorous illustration that mashes together Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns with Hanna Barbera’s Scooby-Doo. The result is a fake Batman & Velma Mysteries comic that would be fantastic! In this mashup story arc, Velma takes on the role of Robin, which makes perfect sense.
The art was created for The Line is Drawn’s Hanna-Barbera/Comic Book mashup series, and you can check out more of the art created for the collection here. Some of them are pretty fun, but this is my favorite.

There’s something of a golden age of animation taking place right now. While Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon continue to cater to the kids (the traditional audience for cartoons), Adult Swim, Comedy Central and Netflix are producing brilliant animated content for the older crowd. With the popularity of shows like BoJack Horseman and Archer, many people in their 20s and 30s are getting back into the genre that they loved as children. So it makes sense that some classic cartoons are getting rebooted.
Danger Mouse and the Care Bears are getting brand new seasons. The Ducktales crew are returning to our screens. Even The Magic School Bus which wants kids to learn while they watch (ew), is getting a new outing.
The following, much-loved animated shows deserve the same treatment. Some of them were ahead of their time to begin with, and some would need quite an overhaul...

Tubefilter and Big Frame helped to kick off VidCon 2015 back in late July by hosting their Fifth Annual Pre-Party event at K1 Speed in Anaheim, CA, a go-cart arena just a quick pitstop away from the Anaheim Convention Center.
With food trucks outside and a gaming pavilion provided by Google Play stationed above the track, attendees gathered around the raceway, where go-karts roared by and guests were given the opportunity to quench their need for speed.
This year’s racing was provided an extra incentive from GarageMonkey and an opportunity for the burgeoning YouTube multi-channel network to showcase itself to the greater online video community. The self-proclaimed "forward-leaning media company" for "the world's auto, motorcycle, and racing audience, as well as the brand that fuel their passions" hosted the event’s first ever “Grand Prix,” offering a GoPro camera and Xbox One Wireless Controller as top prizes to the racer...

The Barnes & Noble Criterion sale may have ended earlier this month, but there are still many Criterion Collection deals to be had around the web. Rakuten is holding a nice 50% off sale, and Deep Discount has many at or near 45% off. Amazon still has a lot of great deals on Kino Lorber Studio Classics Blu-rays, and there are some great deals to be had at Amazon UK for those region-free folks.
Thanks to everyone for supporting our site by buying through our affiliate links.
A note on Amazon deals, for those curious: sometimes third party sellers will suddenly appear as the main purchasing option on a product page, even though Amazon will sell it directly from themselves for the sale price that we have listed. If the sale price doesn’t show up, click on the “new” options, and look for Amazon’s listing.
I’ll keep this list updated throughout the week,...

Today may not be Friday the 13th, but with Neca revealing their Mrs. Voorhees and Young Jason figures earlier today and Funko now announcing their Comic-Con 2015 exclusive Jason Voorhees Unmasked Pop! Vinyl, it feels like summer camp.

Hanna Barbera's Jonny Quest is to be made into a live action movie.
Warner Bros is pressing ahead with a movie based on the Hanna Barbera cartoon Jonny Quest - and it's hired Robert Rodriguez to direct the movie. Rodriguez is penning the screenplay for the movie with regular Pirates Of The Caribbean scribe Terry Rossio. The pair are to rework an earlier draft penned by Dan Mazeau.
Jonny Quest is, of course, the child who goes across the globe alongside his scientist father, bodyguard Race Bannon, and Jonny's chum Hadji. Danger is rarely far away, and Jonny is at the forefront of getting them out of it.
A film version has been in the works for some time, and at one stage Zac Efron was being mooted to start.
The new movie will be live action, and Warner Bros will be hoping that Rodriguez brings the success of...

Let's hope Jack Nicholson has a pleasant birthday on Wednesday, or at least a less disturbing one than the birthday when pal Hunter S. Thompson showed up outside his house, turned on a spotlight, blasted a recording of a pig being eaten alive by bears, fired several rounds from his 9mm pistol, and (when the terrified actor and his kids refused to open the door) left an elk's heart on the doorstep.
Nicholson turns 78 on April 22, and even though he hasn't been in a movie for five years, he still looms large in our collective imaginations. Younger viewers know him from his flamboyant performances in "The Departed," "The Bucket List," "Something's Gotta Give," and "Anger Management," but his older films remain ubiquitous on TV as well, including "As Good as It Gets," "A Few Good Men," "Batman," "The Witches of Eastwick," "Terms of Endearment," "The Shining," and "Chinatown." A late bloomer,...
