In early 2018, the American national security apparatus was fixated on reports that North Korea was building nuclear weapons that could reach the U.S. or that Russia was plotting chemical weapons assassinations in Europe. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump was busy targeting his idea of an enemy of the state: late night host Jimmy Kimmel.
The then-president, according to two former Trump administration officials, was so upset by Kimmel’s comedic jabs that he directed his White House staff to call up one of Disney’s top executives in Washington, D.

Writer/director Richard Bates Jr. and AnnaLynne McCord first came together several years ago to create Excision—the haunting tale of a young woman’s obsession with surgery that takes a tragic turn—which premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The duo have returned to Park City this year for their latest collaboration, Trash Fire, which recently celebrated its debut as part of Sundance’s stellar Midnight selections.
Trash Fire follows Owen (Adrian Grenier), a troubled 20-something who wants to reconnect with his family—and his sister Pearl (McCord) in particular—after he learns some life-altering news from his longtime girlfriend (Angela Trimbur) and realizes he needs to atone for his past mistakes.
Daily Dead had the opportunity to catch up with both Bates Jr. and McCord during the festival to hear more about their experiences collaborating together on this personal tale of redemption and dealing with your demons. Bates Jr.

Part jet-black comedy, part house-of-horrors shocker complete with snakes in the toilet, this uneven film delivers a bumpy ride
One of the most difficult tricks to pull off in film-making is mixing genres. Pushing boundaries and testing audience expectations is a lure for many directors, but it takes bona fide geniuses (like the Coen Brothers) to pull it off regularly. What so frequently happens, as is the case in Trash Fire, is one finds oneself adrift mid-picture, completely unable to determine if what’s happening onscreen in meant to be taken seriously.
Writer-director Richard Bates Jr brought his marvelous, hallucinatory body horror debut Excision to Sundance in 2012, and Trash Fire’s first half shares that film’s sense of audacity. Adrian Grenier’s Owen is a misanthrope with a drinking problem, vituperative tongue and a girlfriend, Isabel (Angela Trimbur), who mothers him despite his complete inability to care for her emotionally or sexually.

As Sundance and Slamdance prepare to kick off this week some insiders have predicted there could be a surge of activity from digital platforms besides Netflix and Amazon Studios.
The latter two are expected to be active – and indeed have already taken a few Park City titles off the table – yet there is talk of other well-capitalised companies mulling over a splashy entry into the acquisitions arena.
The Sundance Film Festival runs from January 21-31.
Nimble digital platforms challenge traditional buyers
Faced with sharp digital rivals unencumbered by the need to spend on costly P&A and plugged into transactional data that enables them to target audiences with forensic precision, theatrical buyers will need to be on their toes.
The distribution landscape is crowded and unforgiving, yet creative marketing campaigns can pave the way to success.
Among others, A24 did it with Ex Machina and Fox Searchlight reaped rewards with its 2015 Sundance pick-up Brooklyn, earning Oscar nods...

The WWE have made a name for themselves in the movie world with a spate of well-recieved action and horror movies, however that’s not the only types of filmic fare they’ve put their name to. Back in the burgeoning days of WWE Studios, the company put out a number of comedies and family-friendly films that – looking at the WWE’s cinematic landscape today – don’t quite fit the mold they have built for themselves.
Yet whilst the WWE have found financial and critical success with genre fare such as No One Lives, The Call, See No Evil 2 and Oculus, they haven’t forgot their family-friendly beginnings – producing animated movies with Hanna Barbera featuring WWE Superstars alongside iconic cartoon characters such...

Richard Bates, Jr., the madman behind Excision, releases his sophomore feature, the silly, strange Suburban Gothic to VOD today. It’s that time of year again… The weather is getting chilly, the leaves are changing colors and falling from the trees, and everyone is in full Halloween mode. Fall is my favorite time of year for all of those reasons; and also because it means that Toronto After Dark is upon us.
If you’re not familiar with the festival, you can find all sorts of information on their official site – http://torontoafterdark.com. However, if you are a regular reader here, you probably already know that we love the festival and do our best to cover as much of it as possible every year. This is the ninth year of the festival – I’ve been attending annually since 2008 – and this year’s lineup is quite killer (you can find the full schedule Here). Apparently, that fact hasn’t been lost on fans because many of the films are...

Grimmfest 2014 takes place in Manchester, England, from the 2nd-5th October, and the opening night lineup has been announced. It includes two bloody fantastic features, an exclusive short film premiere, and some great special guests.
This year’s Grimmfest Opening Night will be headlined by the English Premiere of Brian O’Malley’s Scottish/Irish horror Let Us Prey starring Liam Cunningham ("Game of Thrones") and Pollyanna McIntosh (The Woman).
Synopsis:
We join Rachel (McIntosh), a rookie cop, as she is about to begin her first nightshift in a neglected police station in a Scottish backwater town... the kind of place where the tide has gone out and stranded a motley bunch of the aimless, the forgotten, the bitter-and-twisted who all think that, really, they deserve to be somewhere else. They all think they’re there by accident and that, with a little luck, life is going to get better.

The director of Excision returns for a lighter, oddball horror comedy. Here's Jules-Pierre's review of Suburban Gothic...
Suburban Gothic is director Richard Bates Jr's second film following Excision, his gruesome horror about a disturbed teen's mental state. Suburban Gothic, however, trades in most of the blood and grisly scenes of Excision for more humour while retaining Bates's trademark character moments and dialogues.
There's surely more room for genre comedies like Ghostbusters, but the gaps in between releases in that genre can almost be measured in decades, and it has to be said that many of them aren't particularly good: for every Spaceballs there's a The Creature Wasn't Nice (obscure reference − look it up), and for every Princess Bride there's a Your Highness. Luckily, we sometimes get a few good ones in a row, such as Zombieland, Shaun Of The Dead, and Tucker And Dale Vs Evil.

Moving back in with your parents can be hard to do. It comes with a modicum of humility and confusion. You're an adult: How did it get to this bad? Why can't you find a job? You have a degree, but are driven back home until you get back on your feet - how long will this last? Richard Bates Jr. pushes the answers to these questions into extreme, often very funny, territory in Suburban Gothic, his sophomore feature following the grisly Excision. His latest film - which made its world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival - deliberately favors humor over horror this time around. But it's not the pitch black laughs that came in Excision.

This trailer just kind of popped up from out of nowhere, but I like what i”m seeing. Director Richard Bates is responsible for a little flick titled ‘Excision’ this is in my opinion one of the most overlooked horror films of the last few years. His latest project ‘Suburban Gothic’ is priming itself for a big Fantasia Film Festival roll out later this month and as such – the aforementioned trailer has been released.

Richard Bates made a big bloody mess on the genre scene with Excision. He's been away for far too long, but he's back now with Suburban Gothic, a film that is premiering at the Fantasia Film Festival this month in Montreal. Bates has, once again, pulled in an eclectic cast that includes: Matthew Gray Gubler, Kat Dennings, Ray Wise, Barbara Niven, Sally Kirkland, Jeffrey Combs, John Waters and Muse Watson.

Richard Bates, Jr., who sold his first feature Excision out of Sundance, directs and co-wrote the pic about Raymond (Gubler), who moves back in with his parents and finds new purpose by putting his ability […]...

Slim Pickens was an actor known for One Eyed Jacks, Blazing Saddles and of course Dr Strangelove. What you get this week is not Pickens the actor iconically riding the bomb down to the ground in the Stanley Kubrick classic or any kind of online retrospective of his work, but slim pickings in terms of new streaming choices. So it’s Netflix’s time to shine….
Netflix has added more or less all of the low-key interesting independent films from last year with real gems like Safety Not Guaranteed and Maniac and even the lesser likes of Excision and Some Guy Who Kills People. On Californication this week, Atticus took a break from doing cocaine off his mirror this week to actually look at himself in it.
Just when Hank had found his creative mojo again and Charlie was on the path to career reincarnation, their meal ticket decided to hang up his leather pants and work on his sobriety on "The Abby."
Unable to bring down the walls of Castle Abstinence on their first attempt, Hank and Faith needed some bigger guns - and few can pop off more colorfully than Richard Bates. I think I would have gone to class a lot more consistently in college if he had been one of my professors.

Californication Episode 6.9 was a cavalcade of wild sexual mayhem. Chocolate bars were eaten out of questionable crevices. Rock stars had suicidal tendencies. Rob Lowe showed off his version of drunken Kung-Fu. Charlie and Hank partied with the Karen and Marcy dopplegangers. And Karen and Hank had another one of their patented cry-ridden, heart-to-hearts.
“Mad Dogs & Englishmen” may have been “chock” full of playful antics, but it also did something that Cali hasn’t managed to do in a long time. It briefly, and I do mean briefly, reminded us that Karen does have a place on Californication.
For too long have we loathed Karen’s flirtatious relationship with Hank, especially after season 3’s finale fallout. In Season 4, we thought she had finally moved on. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. She stepped back in time and hooked up with Richard Bates, an older, gay version of Hank.
Thankfully, Tom Kapinos gave us time...

I'm always impressed when male filmmakers use the horror genre to say something interesting about women. Obviously we need more female writers, producers, and directors (a lot more) in the horror genre, but at least we can enjoy it when creative men step up and represent the female gender in frank and honest fashion. Filmmakers like Lucky McKee (May, The Woman), Paul Solet (Grace), Mitch Lichtenstein (Teeth), Pascal Laugier (Martyrs), Neil Marshall (The Descent), Richard Bates (Excision) and several others are plainly interested in how women can function within the realm of horror as heroines, anti-heroines, victims, and victimizers, which makes each new discovery sort of exciting.

This week on Californication, both fresh out of rehab, Hank and Robbie Mac meet to discuss a potential project, one with which Hank cannot get on board at the outset of "Hell Bent for Leather."
Charlie, meanwhile, was happy to have his best friend back - but didn't like the sound of Hank's plans.
The whole reason any of us know Hank Moody is because the man has a gift for the written word. Because he has strayed from his wheelhouse, his life has been a tumult. So it was very interesting to see Charlie almost enabling Hank, pushing him toward another project like those which have only caused him grief. Hank may have his drinking under control, but he needs to listen to his heart and get back to doing what he does best.
I think he got a glimpse of just that this week when he caught the tail end of Becca's reading.

Regardless of what department they work in, everyone at FEARnet loves scary movies. So we asked the entire company to help us pick the best fright flicks of the year. In no particular order...
Sinister
"I went in blind not knowing much more than a plot line and Ethan Hawke was the lead. What happened next was me being scared in a theater for the first time in years. So much so, that I actually gripped up the armrests every time a new 8mm film was played. Needless to say, that last one is a doozy."
- Sarah Shannon, Programming
"Absolutely the best theatrical horror film I’ve seen in many, many years. Creepy, scary, suspenseful, a good story and a very solid, understated performance from Ethan Hawke."
-Rick Kent, Standards & Practices
"Atmospheric, frightening and surprisingly shocking."

Another year winds down, and it's time to reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly of 2012's horror offerings. We're giving you ten different lists this time, and per usual they come in a variety of formats, each reflecting the unique styles of our writers. We've also compiled them to come up with the year's overall winners and losers.
And don't be lazy by just reading along! Give us your own lists in the comments section below. We want to hear what you thought of the year in which we dodged the Mayan apocalypse but find our beloved genre facing some dark days as violent movies, video games, TV shows, etc., are coming under increased scrutiny following recent events.

I don’t’ share the popular opinion that 2012 has been a terrible year in film. It hasn’t been as strong as previous years but 2012 gave us such gems as Holy Motors, The Master, Berberian Sound Studio, Tabu, Skyfall and Moonrise Kingdom, to name a few. As with every year, I thought it appropriate to highlight some of the year’s most memorable individual moments, scenes, and sequences, from movies that may or may not have made our individual year-end lists. Which is no small feat considering just how insane the release calendar has become.
We are keeping out credit sequences since we feel it is an art form in itself.
Honourable Mentions:
The Deep Blue Sea – The underground flashback.
Oslo, August 31st – The cafe scene.
Miss Bala – The extended take during the shoot out .
Universal Solider 4 – The opening shotgun sequence.
Universal Solider 4 – The fight in the sport retail store.

However, in Season 5, Californication through caution and reality out the window. Karen was with Richard Bates, aka old Hank. Becca was dating Tyler, aka new Hank. And Hank diving deeper into callous indifference.

The Master (12)
(Paul Thomas Anderson, 2012, Us) Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons. 144 mins

Like There Will Be Blood, it explores a big subject (a Scientology-like cult) via two contrasting men: Hoffman as the Hubbard-ish leader; Phoenix as a drunken, damaged drifter. Those expecting a straightforward story – tough. You're getting a "masterpiece".
Rust And Bone (15)
(Jacques Audiard, 2012, Fra/Bel) Marion Cotillard, Armand Verdure. 123 mins
As he did with A Prophet, Audiard makes us care so much about his characters we'll follow them anywhere. This time it's a study of physical and mental frailty,...
