“Cold Courage,” produced by Lionsgate, is an adaptation of the series of novels by Finnish journalist Pekka Hiltunen. "I'm on the dark side." Rlje Films has debuted another trailer for the imminent US release of Prevenge, the pregnancy black comedy from filmmaker Alice Lowe. This horror film originally premiered in 2016 at the Venice Film Festival, played on the festival circuit for a year, opened in the UK in 2017, streaming on Shudder in 2018, and is finally getting a full DVD/VOD release in the US in 2020. Whew. (The filmmakers already have another film in the works - Timestalker.) Described as a "pitch black, wryly British comedy", the film follows Ruth, played by Lowe, a woman seven months pregnant who listens to what her baby tells her and takes out anyone who stands in her way. It has taken a while for Adult Life Skills to make its way to theaters. After debuting back in 2016 at the Tribeca Film Festival, it’s approaching the three year mark as the movie now hits cinemas. Often, a delay like that can be a sign of trouble. Luckily, that’s in no way the case here. This comedy/dramedy is a quirky character study/coming of age tale with a winning performance at its core. A showcase for talented women in front of and behind the camera, this is worth the wait. Coming out this week at long last, you folks will finally be able to see what I saw way back in 2016. The movie is a comedy with some occasionally heavier elements, all centered around a tale of arrested development. An adaptation of filmmaker Rachel Tunnard’s BAFTA nominated short film, it takes place in a rural English...

"You need to lighten up!" Screen Media Films has debuted an official Us trailer for an indie comedy titled Adult Life Skills, a coming-of-age about an almost-30 woman who needs to grow up and move out of her mum's shed in the backyard. This film originally premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival back in 2016, and also opened in the UK also in 2016. It's somehow just now getting a Us release this January, almost three years later. Jodie Whittaker stars as Anna, a woman comfortable living in her mom's garden shed making funny videos all day with her thumbs, but as she approaches 30, she starts feeling the pressure to move on and "grow up" without compromising her youthful spirit. How quaint. In addition to Whittaker, the film's cast includes Edward Hogg, Lorraine Ashbourne, Brett Goldstein, Eileen Davies, Alice Lowe, and Ozzy Myers. Not really sure this is going to be that...

It also features Lily Newmark, Eva Ariel Binder, Eileen Davies, Victoria Sokolova, Danis Grube, Toms Liepajnieks, Sophia Massa, and Ieva Seglina. Nobody stands up for Britons in the lower class trenches like the fierce, opinionated and outright brilliant Mike Leigh; his unusual writing and directing method yields terrific results in his first feature made for TV. And the early performances of Tim Roth, Phil Daniels and Gary Oldman should be the stuff of acting legend, ’80s style.

The following is excerpted from a chapter in film critic Adam Nayman’s new book “Ben Wheatley: Confusion and Carnage,” which is now available.
“Nobody fucks with you like [Ben] Wheatley,” wrote Cinema Scope’s Robert Koehler in a dispatch filed from Cannes in 2012, the year that “Sightseers” premiered in the Director’s Fortnight and shifted the critical perception of its director to a global figure. If Cannes is historically the proving ground for auteur directors, then the presence of “Sightseers” on the Croisette suggested that Wheatley was emerging from his niche as a UK genre specialist. For Koehler, “Sightseers” was one of the titles at Cannes that seemed “eager to play outside boundaries within which most of the other films were all too willing to contain themselves.”
Trying to break away from the everyday—or, put another way, the search for transcendence—is the secret theme of “Sightseers,” a film that,...

"There was nothing normal about the girl. She grew into the oddest of odd balls." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released a trailer for an indie drama titled This Beautiful Fantastic, written and directed by Simon Aboud. Jessica Brown Findlay (seen in Albatross, Winter's Tale, The Riot Club, Victor Frankenstein) stars as Bella Brown, an awkward, shy young woman who dreams of writing and illustrating a successful children’s book. Described as a "contemporary fairy tale", she encounters her grumpy next door and works to save a garden most of the time. Also starring Andrew Scott, Tom Wilkinson, Jeremy Irvine, Anna Chancellor & Eileen Davies. This actually looks quite good, it reminds me a bit of Amelie. Have a look. This inventively filmed but overlong drama plays like a bag of jagged shards broken off from other miserabilist rural-set British films
Set in the squelchy, crushed-flat fields and pongy, primeval marshes of Norfolk’s Broadlands, this maddeningly oblique, somewhat pretentious drama has a great landscape and interesting faces to look at, filmed with inventive style by Tim Sidell who’s clearly watched a lot of Alexander Sokurov films. But writer-director Martin Radich’s script plays like a bag of jagged shards broken off from other miserabilist rural-set British films. Just like the Fenland-set The Goob (2014), for instance, writer-director Martin Radich’s work has its own menacing patriarch (Denis Ménochet), a winsome, educationally deprived teenage boy (Barry Keoghan) and a pretty east European immigrant (Lithuanian Goda Letkauskaitė, cast after being spotted in a Norwich park) all thrown into conflict when the son (none of the characters have actual names) discovers the...

Based on J.G. Ballard’s 1975 novel of the same name, High-Rise is the latest from filmmaker Ben Wheatley and stars Tom Hiddleston, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, Jeremy Irons, and Elizabeth Moss. Written by Amy Jump (who collaborated with Wheatley on Kill List, Sightseers, and A Field in England), High-Rise is a fascinatingly surreal cautionary tale of how class systems effectively break down and why society will always be its own worst enemy.
Set in 1975, High-Rise follows Dr. Robert Laing (Hiddleston) as he moves into a futuristic and luxurious apartment building in which residents are ranked by their stature in life and relegated to live on the floors the building’s architect and overseer, Anthony Royal (Irons), and his aristocratic associates see fit. The poorest folks live towards the bottom, the middle class reside above them, and so forth all the way up to Royal’s insanely intricate penthouse, complete with...

Exclusive: Sightseers co-writer and star is directing and starring in Prevenge while seven-and-a-half months pregnant.
Sightseers co-writer and star Alice Lowe is set to start shooting her directorial debt feature, provisionally titled Prevenge, on Thursday (Oct 29) in Cardiff. Western Edge Pictures/Gennaker is fully financing.
Lowe, who is seven-and-a-half months pregnant in real life, also stars as a pregnant woman on a killing spree, targeting individuals from different walks of life. Her motivation for revenge is gradually revealed.
Lowe described Prevenge as a “post-feminist revenge movie”. The writer-director has structured a narrative for the film and said it is “a classic revenge tale and very episodic, so the structure was quite laid out,” but will also employ improvisation on set.
“We’re using improvisation a lot and that’s quite a good tool if you are confident enough to use it,” Lowe told ScreenDaily.

We’ve seen plenty of films about fascinating serial killers and what led to their destructive and perverse behaviors, but in Sightseers we get to see what would drive the average human into becoming a serial killer. Shut-in Tina (Alice Lowe) is tired of living with her crabby, senile mother (Eileen Davies) and eager to go on a road trip with her new boyfriend Chris (Steve Oram). Chris has planned a trip around the British Isles to visit various tourist spots. But from the start, various outside forces threaten to upset Chris’ perfectly planned trip—starting when Chris accidentally runs over a pedestrian with his trailer caravan.

The co-star and co-writer of Sightseers chats to us about the film, as well as the Midlands, women and Michael Elphick in cinema...
Sightseers arrives on disc in the UK today, off the back of well-deserved awards and acclaim. It was quite a journey for its co-star and co-writer, Alice Lowe, to get the film made. And she spared us a bit of time to talk about it all...
It almost seems folly to say congratulations on the film now, given that it's been quite the journey it has. I'm a Midlander first and foremost, so to see a movie open with a map of Halesowen gave me real glee. It did get me thinking that the cinema of the West Midlands has been sadly lacking on the big screen. The best I could do was Michael Elphick in I Bought A Vampire Motorcycle.

IFC recently acquired distribution rights to Antiviral, Sightseers, and My Amityville Horror, and we have news on when you’ll be able to see all three films. Antiviral was directed by Brandon Cronenberg and will receive a simultaneous VOD and limited theatrical release on May 10th, according to Fangoria. The movie stars Caleb Landry Jones, Sarah Gadon, Douglas Smith, and Malcolm McDowell.
“Antiviral follows Syd March, an employee at a clinic that sells injections of live viruses harvested from sick celebrities to obsessed fans. Biological communion – for a price. Syd also supplies illegal samples of these viruses to piracy groups, smuggling them from the clinic in his own body. When he becomes infected with the disease that kills super sensation Hannah Geist, Syd becomes a target for collectors and rabid fans. He must unravel the mystery surrounding her death before he suffers the same fate.”

Chris (Steve Oram) and Tina (Alice Lowe) have only been dating for a few months when Chris suggests that they drive across the rolling moors of Yorkshire for a week-long vacation. Chris wants to show Tina his "world," which basically means taking her to various sites of historical significance that he holds dear to his heart. The trip will also whisk Tina away from her emotionally manipulative mother (Eileen Davies), who has kept Tina from doing much of anything with her life.

Sightseers (15)
(Ben Wheatley, 2012, UK) Steve Oram, Alice Lowe, Eileen Davies, Richard Glover. 88 mins
It's been billed as Badlands meets Nuts In May, but what separates this English country killing spree from its influences is its finely tuned sense of humour, which owes more to Alan Partridge or Edgar Wright. That's the black icing on a cake that's already rich with satire, twisted romance and gruesome violence, as our caravanning couple carve a murderous swathe through our nation's more mundane tourist attractions. It makes you proud to be British.
Great Expectations (12A)
(Mike Newell, 2012, UK/Us) Jeremy Irvine, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter. 128 mins
To be honest, expectations weren't that great for this lavish, handsome, star-stuffed but essentially orthodox Dickens adaptation. Despite the epic scope, the dense plot feels crammed in, and...

Comedies don't come much darker than this chillingly distinctive caravan caper from the makers of Kill List
Sightseers is the macabre and violent black comedy of English manners that premiered this year in the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes film festival, and when I first saw it, I think I might have got out of bed the right side – putting me in a bland and placid mood, and unreceptive to all the film's bizarre qualities. I wrote that it did not have the originality and unclassifiability of director Ben Wheatley's previous film Kill List, and at times looked like an extended character-comedy sketch. While these things are still true, a second viewing has further revealed just how superb are the effortless performances of Steve Oram and Alice Lowe, who are the movie's writers (working with Wheatley's longtime co-writer Amy Jump), and whose creative ownership makes a purely auteurist comparison...

Kill List director Ben Wheatley returns with his latest opus, Sightseers, a very British black comedy which is penned by its stars Alice Lowe and Steve Oram and tells the story of Chris (Oram) who wants to show Tina (Lowe) his world and he wants to do it his way – on a journey through the British Isles in his beloved Abbey Oxford Caravan. Tina’s led a sheltered life and there are things that Chris needs her to see – the Crich Tramway Museum, the Ribblehead Viaduct, the Keswick Pencil Museum and the rolling countryside that accompanies these wonders in his life. But it doesn’t take long for the dream to fade. Litterbugs, noisy teenagers and pre-booked caravan sites, not to mention Tina’s meddling mother,...

“It was an accident.” “So were you!” So begins the soon to be murderous road trip of Sightseers, mousy Tina (Alice Lowe) shot down by her battleaxe mother (a superbly manipulative Eileen Davies) as her apparently more world-wise new boyfriend Chris (Steve Oram) prepares to hit the road. The film is full of dark, sinister exchanges that amuse, it being a comedy about a young couple who discover a mutual love of murder. It’s a comedic British Badlands, albeit a version not quite so successful. You’ll find yourself laughing at one moment, cringing the next (the gore quotient is surprisingly high), but oddly unable to recall much of it once it’s over.
Screenwriters Oram and Lowe’s original plan was to make their idea for Sightseers into a sitcom; 45 minutes into the movie, it shows. This is a frequently funny film, one that should please audiences (this...

Here’s a new 60-second trailer for Sightseers, a road trip comedy about two people who just happen to share a mutual desire to kill.
Sightseers is the third film from award-winning director Ben Wheatley (Down Terrace, Kill List), starring Alice Lowe, Steve Oram, Eileen Davies, Jonathan Aris, Richard Glover and Monica Dolan. The pitch black comedy penned by its stars – Lowe and Oram – is about two young lovers who take a caravanning holiday around the British Isles.
However, the trip taken by introverted dog-lover Tina (Lowe) and Chris (Oram) doesn’t take very long to fade, either. ‘Noisy teenagers and pre-booked caravan sites, not to mention Tina’s meddling mother, soon conspire to shatter Chris’s dreams and send him, and anyone who rubs him up the wrong way, over a very jagged edge…’

It's due to arrive in UK theatres from 30 November and a brand new and fantastic looking trailer has popped up for the project penned by Amy Jump and star Steve Oram. I'm thoroughly enjoying the very bleak yet British world's that director Wheatley is pulling his audiences into and am very much looking forward to this new vision which also boasts filmmaker Edgar Wright ('Shaun of the Dead', 'Hot Fuzz') who'll be serving as executive producer. Next up for Wheatley will be his segment in horror anthology 'The ABCs of Death'. 'Sightseers' stars Alice Lowe and co-writer Oram, along with Lucy Russell, Monica Dolan, Jonathan Aris, Gareth Tunley, Eileen Davies, Stephanie Jacob, Aymen Hamdouchi and Kenneth Hadley. Head below for the full synopsis breakdown plus the new trailer.

Toronto – On July 31st, the 37th annual Toronto International Film Festival announced its second wave of features and documentaries to be added to this year’s already promising lineup.
The ‘Midnight Madness’ programme, which showcases up and coming genre films, will return for a second year, with The Raid winning the inaugural audience choice award in 2011.
Tiff Programmer Colin Geddes says that the audience should expect “everything from outrageous horror comedies to mock-doc-eco-apocalypse thrillers, featuring trans-dimensional bugs, lewd Catholic priests, meat monsters and dog-snapping psychopaths that will animate the Ryerson Theatre when the clock chimes 12.”
Returning for its fourth edition this year is the ‘City to City’ programme, which puts a spotlight on filmmakers working and living in a certain city, introducing audiences to local independent films from around the world. This year’s city of choice is Mumbai.
Artistic Director Cameron Bailey says, “Mumbai’s cinema today is entirely...
