The isolation and helplessness some people felt during the prime days of Covid lockdown is utilized to good effect in “The Harbinger.” Andy Mitton’s second solo feature (following two co-directed with Jesse Holland) is a spooky tale in which vulnerable individuals find themselves prey to a malevolent spirit that worms into their dreams, dislodging them from grounding reality.

Disturbing, recurrent cries from the NYC apartment of Mavis (Ellen Davis) have gotten complaints from neighbors, particularly a next-door “Karen” and belligerent anti-masker (Stephanie Roth Haberle). When her more-sympathetic building superintendent (Cody Braverman) lets himself in to investigate, he finds the tenant in a state of whimpering hysteria and self-harm — yet asleep. After successfully waking her, he urges Mavis to get help.

Director Andy Mitton takes on night terrors and social distancing in his new horror movie “The Harbinger,” fresh off its world premiere at Fantasia. Recently picked up by XYZ Films, it was produced by Jay Dunn and Richard W. King.
Originally set to follow his well-received 2018 release “The Witch in the Window” with “Walk with Me into the Darkness,” the U.S. director changed his mind after the pandemic hit.
“It was probably parallel to what everyone else was experiencing when it finally dawned on us that it wasn’t going to be just a two-week thing. Our plans went down the tubes,” he reminisces at the Montreal-based fest.
Starring Gabby Beans, the film shows a woman who, after quarantining with her family, decides to venture out into the world again to help out a friend (Emily Davis), suffering from loneliness and terrifying dreams.

Stricken by a paralysing fear of death and uncertainty about what lies beyond, sad-sack Miles (Clark Freeman) places an advert in the newspaper offering a $30,000 reward for anyone who can conclusively prove to him that there’s an afterlife. After receiving and dismissing hundreds of responses, Miles chooses three to follow up on. With his firebrand mother Charlotte (Annette O’Toole) as his sidekick, the duo set off to try and answer the big question once and for all.
Given the basic classified ad set-up, the mumblecore approach, vague ruminations on the meaning of it all and a central conflict between believers and sceptics, I was reminded strongly of Safety Not Guaranteed, though We Go On adds...

Phobia-ridden and driven by a sense of existential dread (and also, literally, his mother, in her car) a man places an ad in the newspaper: prove the existence of life after death, win thirty thousand dollars. Of the many replies he receives (including, apparently, many masturbators), Miles narrows the applicants down to just three – a scientist, a medium and an entrepreneur.
First and foremost, We Go On is a road movie; a mother and her son, seeking answers. Like a downbeat Mulder and Scully, the sceptic (or flat-out unbeliever) and the agnostic, scrabbling for hope in a world which often terrifies the latter. Such a concept would be nothing without a strong pair of leads, and this...

The Bloody-Disgusting Selects flick Yellowbrickroad (yes, all one word) is a story about a group of researchers and filmmakers who go off into the middle of nowhere, Friar New Hampshire to be exact to try and solve a mystery of why the entire population of this town wondered off to this area back in 1940 only to never be heard from again, only about half were found, long dead.
Our group takes to the woods and the deeper they get, the weirder this story gets. Music starts playing and we're in the middle of nowhere New Hampshire people! Our team hears this unsettling music that seems to be from the era our townspeople wondered off. Think old 1940's style of light ballads, maybe. Anyway, our researchers start babbling and talking nonsense as the music plays in the background, some just wonder off almost like they have been hypnotized.

Bloody-Disgusting Selects has released this new theatrical trailer for the indie horror film YellowBrickRoad, which I saw a couple years ago up at the Slamdance Film Festival. I really liked the movie, it had a great 1970’s horror film feel to it. There’s no big special effects or anything like that, this movie relies on messing with the audience's heads and making them think. The directors of the movie even said, the the great films of the 70’s were the inspiration for it. Movies like The Shining, Carrie, The Exorcist, and Deliverance. There was most definitely a great Stephen King style vibe to it that I really liked. You can read my review for it here for anyone interested in the film.
Here's the synopsis:
One Morning in New England, 1940, the entire population of Friar New Hampshire - 572 people - walked together up a winding mountain trail and into the wilderness.

Dread hit the black carpet of the tenth annual Screamfest La film festival this past Saturday night at the Grauman’s 6 Theatre in the center of Hollywood, CA, and brought back some video interviews with the filmmakers of the Los Angeles premiering features YellowBrickRoad and Needle.
On hand to discuss the former were the writer/director team of Andy Mitton and Jesse Holland, who enthusiastically chatted up their twist on the “forest horror film,” as were Needle director John V. Soto and producer Deidre Kitcher, Australian filmmakers who riffed on the slasher/giallo hybrid that is Needle.
YellowBrickRoad cast members/producers Clark Freeman and Cassidy Freeman were on hand as well, as were YellowBrickRoad actors Michael Laurino and Laura Heisler and Needle players Trilby Glover, Tahnya Tozzi and Kahn Chittenden. There’s no way to write a description of Jef Taylor‘s provocative and daring Coverage without making it sound like one of the most insensitive films imaginable. Yet, by dealing with such scandalous material, Taylor is able to touch upon a whole host of issues, on both a personal and a grand social scale with remarkable depth and insight.
The film opens with David (Michael Tisdale), a twenty-something male who has been stricken impotent by the loss of his job. Clearly, his relationship with his live-in girlfriend Lynn (Laura Heisler) is beginning to crack from their lack of intimacy. David stays home, sending out resumes and watching the news while Lynn continues to be the household’s sole breadwinner.
But their situation is significantly altered one day when, while watching the news alone, David witnesses the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001 unfold live on TV. When Lynn returns home from work,...

While at the 2010 Slamdance Film Festival, this writer had the pleasure of meeting the cast and creative forces behind YellowBrickRoad, an indie genre film that ended up being one of the most buzzed about entries in what has turned into Park City’s true independent film festival.
What impressed me most about YellowBrickRoad’s directing duo of Andy Mitton and Jesse Holland was their passion for the film. Now with their Slamdance debut a few months behind them and their film about to play the also prestigious Atlanta Film Festival on April 19th and 20th, I thought the timing was perfect to talk to the pair about their film, their journey to get to this point, and what’s next for them.

One upcoming feature we're curious to check out is YellowBrickRoad from writing/directing duo Jesse Holland and Andy Mitton. The indie pic delves into the mystery of a small New Hampshire community that, in the fall of 1940, walked together up a winding mountain trail and into the wilderness, never to be seen alive again. The only clue left behind was a single word etched into stone near the forest's edge: Yellowbrickroad. In 2009, the coordinates to the trail were declassified and a team of researchers sets out to find out the truth behind the town's disappearance. (See the trailer here !) The film stars Cassidy Freeman ( Smallville ), Anessa Ramsey ( The Signal ), Laura Heisler ( Numb3rs ), Michael Laurino ( Past Life ), Clark Freeman ( Simulacrum ), Alex Draper ( Joshua ), and...

A few days ago I posted promo photos for the December 3rd episode of Bones (next week will be pre-empted) and now we have a promo video for you. It's a gamer-centric episode (and an Avatar-centric episode in a brilliant cross-promotion move by Fox because they really want to recoup the $300 million they spent on making the James Cameron picture).

Oh my God, how much do I love Bones? Answer: A Lot. If you've been watching trailers for Avatar, you will have noticed Joel David Moore, who has played intern Colin Fisher on several episodes of Bones. Well, Moore is back and there's a big cross-promotion going on as Sweets and Fisher take turns camping out for tickets to the opening on Avatar. Bones And Avatar in one episode? It's like Nutella and peanut butter together on toast (try it, it's yummy). It's also funny and awesome.
Fox has released promo photos and a synopsis for the December 3rd episode and you can check them out below. Also, take a peek at the promo photos for the November 19th episode, where Booth's grandfather makes an appearance. Then it's a week's break until the December 3rd episode.
