From Christmas Eve capers to Michael Shannon pretending to be Bigfoot, here are some more unusual Christmas movie picks for this season
Despite only being in season for about a month of the year, Christmas movies are a booming business. Outside of big-screen offerings like Paul Feig’s Last Christmas and a new version of Black Christmas, the Hallmark Channel has produced a whopping 40 new festive movies for 2019 and Netflix has turned out a range of original films too.
Few of the new films produced each year will join the annual rotation of classics like The Muppet Christmas Carol and It’s A Wonderful Life, but not everyone wants to watch the same films once a year every year. If you’re looking for something festive that you might have missed, or you just haven’t seen in a long time, or even something that isn’t about either Santa or Scrooge,...

In the new holiday horror movie Await Further Instructions, Christmas Day takes a deadly turn for one dysfunctional family when they find themselves trapped inside their home, with their only link to the outside world being the mysterious—potentially malevolent—messages on their TV screen. Following its time on the festival circuit, Await Further Instructions is coming to Blu-ray and DVD this December from Dark Sky Films, just in time to be added to stockings "hung by the chimney with care."
"It's Christmas Day and the Milgram family wake to find a mysterious black substance surrounding their house. Something monumental is clearly happening right outside their door, but what exactly - an industrial accident, a terrorist attack, nuclear war? Descending into terrified arguments, they turn on the television, desperate for any information. On screen a message glows ominously: 'Stay Indoors and Await Further Instructions'. As the television exerts an ever more sinister grip,...

It’s nearly that time of year again, my favourite time of year…..no not Halloween! I’m talking about Christmas! And despite its slightly unusual title Await Further Instructions is indeed a Christmas horror film.
Taking place over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day you might expect plenty of cheer but Await Further instructions isn’t the happiest of movies. For a start, the family aren’t the closest. In particular the son, played by Sam Gittins (Howl), who hasn’t seen his family for a number of years but his current girlfriend (Neerja Naik) pushes him to see them for the holiday so she can meet them. It doesn’t take long for her to regret this. His family aren’t exactly the nicest of people. The father...

Grimmfest 2018, a celebration of the horror genre, sweeps over Manchester, England for the tenth time starting on October 4th and the lineup is pretty exciting. The recently revealed lineup features a fully remastered screening of Splintered (from Grimmfest festival directors Simeon Halligan and Rachel Richardson-Jones), the regional premiere of Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, the horror anthology Nightmare Cinema, a Barbara Crampton Lifetime Achievement Award presentation, and more!
Press Release: This year, Grimmfest, Manchester's Festival of Horror, Cult and Fantastic Film, celebrates its 10th anniversary. Get ready for decimation, with the darkest, deadliest line-up yet of wild, weird, witty, thrilling, chilling, blood-spilling movies, every one of them a premiere or cult classic of one kind or another, many with cast and crew in attendance.
But Grimmfest will also be looking back, a little nervously over its shoulder, perhaps, at a decade spent delivering top-quality cinematic carnage to the movie-goers of Manchester,...

A decade ago, Johnny Kevorkian's impressed us with the release of his feature film debut The Disappeared (review) and now the director has returned with another frightening vision: Await Further Instructions.
The horror unfolds over the Christmas holidays when Nick (Sam Gittins) returns home for the holidays with his new girlfriend Annji (Neerja Naik) in tow. She's excited to meet the rest of the Milgram clan but they're not so keen on her.
The tension gets serious when, on Christmas Day, the family wakes to find themselves trapped in the house with their only outside contact being the instructions being dolled out on their TV. Needless to say, things quickly get out of...

We've got a trailer here's for a dark and twisted horror sci-fi thriller called Await Further Instructions that looks like it could be a fun and creepy movie. I'm not really familiar with anyone involved with the movie, but I like what I'm seeing in this first trailer.

"Someone's locked us in." Dark Sky Films has debuted an official trailer for a freaky new sci-fi horror-thriller titled Await Further Instructions, made by filmmaker Johnny Kevorkian. The film's plot is about an argumentative family that gets together on Christmas. When they wake up on Christmas Day, they discover their house is covered with black material, and when they turn on the TV it says: "Stay Indoors and Await Further Instructions." That's a wicked cool idea for a horror film, something out of "Black Mirror" or "The Twilight Zone". Alas, this doesn't look as good as I'd hoped, a bit too weird, but I'm still very curious about it. The film's cast includes David Bradley, Abigail Cruttenden, Holly Weston, Sam Gittins, Grant Masters, Neerja Naik, and Kris Saddler. This is definitely worth a look, for that concept alone. Here's the first trailer (+ posters) for Johnny Kevorkian's Await Further Instructions, from...

In this round-up we have two exclusive excerpts from horror-thrillers. First up is Neil Gibson's graphic novel Twisted Dark Vol. 5, followed by Vaughn Entwistle's The Angel of Highgate. Also: five new images from Await Further Instructions.
Twisted Dark Volume Five: "Twisted Dark is a series of interconnected psychological thrillers, perfect for fans of twist endings and comics that reveal more on the second reading. Each story stands alone, but the more you read, the more connections you see between the characters. There are over 100 characters that appear more than once and one of the joys of reading is when you spot a reference that you know others will have missed. A rotating team of talented artists draw the stories, with each style offering something new."
Twisted Dark Vol. 5 will be released by TPub Comics in February. To read the first half of Twisted Dark Volume 1, visit: http://goo.gl/Zo...

For the fifth year running, we tally up the Other Year's Best -- the films that made it to DVD (or onto U.S. home video in any format) but not to theatrical, which generally meant they posed too much of a marketing challenge. As in, the films were either too odd, too original, too archival, too subtle, too something. DVDs still stand as our go-to B-movie-distribution stream of choice, although as I've barked every year, video debuts are still not eligible for any year-end toasts or trophies. Except ours.

Rejuvenated Hammer Films franchise launches publicity campaign as part of a summer of hair-raising new releases from UK directors and writers
Hammer Films are to launch a summer publicity campaign ahead of what is being billed as a full-blown revival of the alternative British horror genre. A welter of horror films are scheduled for release this summer, while Ghost Stories, the theatrical show whose programme carries a warning to those of a nervous disposition, is packing in audiences for its West End run.
Joe Cornish, of the comedy duo Adam and Joe, is to make his directorial debut with Attack the Block, a film produced by the team behind Shaun of the Dead, and a reborn Hammer Films, once the greatest film studio in British horror, is to make a 3D feature film based on Susan Hill's modern gothic novel The Woman in Black.

Low-key concepts and limited budgets have given British horror films a gritty realism that is the envy of the industry – but can they ever really compete with their Us rivals?
Unlike the western or the musical, the horror movie never seems to be under threat of extinction. The occasional phenomenon – a Blair Witch Project or a Paranormal Activity – helps to fortify its commercial appeal, as do hits like Scream or Hostel, which refresh the familiar conventions. But horror remains in perpetually good nick, not least in its UK outpost, from which some of the most inventive shockers of the last 10 years have emerged. Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later kicked off a new wave of Brit horror in 2002, but it fell to emerging film-makers to properly paint the town blood-red, from Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) to Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent), Michael J Bassett (Deathwatch, Wilderness) and Christopher Smith (Creep,...

Movies are Saturday night-wasting entertainment and they're transcendent mega-art, but they're also history, living tissues of the past that overpower any other medium we have for preserving experience and retaining cultural memory. This is no small matter, despite the relatively slight influence that film's historical potential has in the consumer marketplace, which is virtually defined by its amnesia. "Word Is Out: Stories of Some of Our Lives" (1977), then, is a gift, not just a film preserved and sold as product, but a piece of the 20th century that will now never quite fade completely from view.
Shot and assembled by a six-person collective (including Rob Epstein, later director of "The Times of Harvey Milk" and "Common Threads"), this film is as simple as it is expansive: amidst the definitive stirrings of the gay rights movement, the filmmakers sat down with 26 gay men and women -- young and old, fat and skinny,...

For the most part, when you hear about a low budget, direct-to-video horror film, expectations of either comic incompetence or extreme boredom fill your mind. However, here’s one that really isn’t too bad. While it isn’t exceptionally scary for the most part, it is an effective psychological thriller that keeps you interested, mostly due to the performances, which are far above average for the genre.
Directed by Johnny Kevorkian (Great name for a horror film director) the film traces the tormented emotional journey of a young man poisoned by guilt and tragedy. The script by Kevorkian and Neil Murphy works on two levels. We have the main plot about a missing child and we also have the psychological exploration of the angst ridden main character.
Matt Ryan (well played by Harry Treadaway) is a damaged 17-year-old. He is being eaten away by guilt ever since his eight-year-old...

Johnny Kevorkian's debut feature film The Disappeared is notable as a horror movie that is neither a remake nor a gore fest. It is also distinguished by the depth of characterization it shoots for, and assisted by the great performance of Harry Treadaway in the lead, Kevorkian has succeeded in giving us a horror film protagonist with a little light, a little dark and a lot of soul. I have spoken to Kevorkian about this film, and also about his upcoming second project Sleep Thief. That's another horror film, though one will apparently skew more towards the gore-effect end of the spectrum without sacrificing the atmosphere and ambitious writing. That interview follows, along with a trailer for The Disappeared. Here's an edited transcript of how Johnny responded to my questioning, subject by subject. The trailer can be found at the bottom of the post. On finding out that The Disappeared...
