The Day I Became a WomanWomen and the home, their “rightful” place in it and alleged duty to it, is ever the topical subject, an all too common association thankfully rife with permutations that provoke inspired debate. The topic of women’s at-home labors is this year’s theme of BAMcinématek’s Women at Work series. Now in its third iteration, the series this year is subtitled The Domestic Is Not Free, and it reveals the many ways in which domesticity has been celebrated—or in this case, more often rebelled against—on screen, by drawing from obvious choices, but also including a few surprises and poignant pairings. Such a series could not be complete without Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975), but also of equal note is Semiotics of the Kitchen (1975), Martha Rosler’s incisive performance piece that screens with it. Rosler stars in her short...

Jessica McGoff was a participant on this year's Film Critics Day workshop at the Cinema Rediscovered film festival in Bristol and Clevedon in the U.K., a celebration of the finest new digital restorations, contemporary classics and film print rarities from across the globe. Further examples of the writing from the workshop, as well as information about the program, can be found on the Cinema Rediscovered Blog.Tracey Moffatt’s BeDevil (1993) is a beguiling work. Its 1993 release marked several firsts: it was Moffatt’s, a video artist and photographer by trade; her first (and only) feature film; and the first feature film to be directed by an Aboriginal woman. Despite opening in the Un Certain Regard strand of that year’s Cannes Film Festival, the film has fallen into relative obscurity since. It is rarely talked about in the canon of Australian cinema, which is both striking and frustrating, especially...

Screen Australia.s decision to hand back the rights of 1,200 titles to the producers, effective July 1, will result in the reissue on DVD and pay TV of some films and TV productions that have long been out of circulation.
While few if any producers expect to get rich from regaining the rights, the move has been widely welcomed.
The agency has clarified that the concession applies to all projects, including features, miniseries, series and telemovies funded by the Film Finance Corp. and during Screen Australia.s first year, that were released or broadcast in the seven years prior to December 31 2008.
The handover has been brought forward by six months. All rights minus a 1% copyright fee revert back to producers.
Producer Matt Carroll is looking forward to exploring the potential of new revenue sources for Passion, his 1993 drama about composer Percy Grainger, which starred Richard Roxburgh. Beyond Films handled the film directed by Peter Duncan.

Resistance comes in all shapes and sizes. A friend was on a bus in inner-suburban Sydney when two small Aboriginal boys jumped on and sat down without paying their fares – the driver announced that the bus would not leave until they did. The bus didn't move, and the boys didn't move either. Minutes ticked past. The other passengers began to get annoyed. The boys sat tight. The driver called for back-up. A police car turned up. Before the police were out of the car, the boys had hopped off the bus and vanished. Pointless? Depends. The boys challenged the driver, and the driver lost. His bus was delayed and his timetable was disrupted, which was a result for the boys. Self-defeating? Probably.
