Dolly Parton is celebrating her birthday Friday, January 19th, with a new deluxe edition of her November album Rockstar that includes fresh tracks.
“It’s my Birthday so I’m going to give you a present!” our November cover star wrote on Twitter. “I’m releasing four never released songs for my birthday, to go with the Rockstar album, and a few others that you may have heard before that were not on the album. I hope you enjoy them, and I hope you all have a happy birthday for me! Lol.”
Rockstar primarily comprised Parton’s renditions of rock classics like “Magic Man,” “Purple Rain,” “Stairway to Heaven,” and many more, plus a who’s-who of guest features. The deluxe edition of Rockstar continues the fun with originals “Mama Never Said” and a live version of “Rockin’ It,” plus the Sylvester Stallone-featuring “Stay Out of My Bedroom,” lifted...

The Beatles‘ “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” was originally by Smokey Robinson’s band The Miracles. Robinson has no memory of hearing that cover for the first time. It left an impression on him anyway. Sveral other major artists recorded “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” as well.
Smokey Robinson said The Beatles’ ‘You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me’ always feels new
During a 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, Robinson was asked what it was like to hear The Beatles’ “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” for the first time. “I don’t recall the first time, but every time for me is the first time on that, man,” he replied. “It was just a joy.

Fifty-six years and 49 albums into her music career, Dolly Parton has a new milestone to celebrate. The country legend’s album Rockstar recently became the singer’s highest-charting LP ever, debuting at Number Three on the Billboard 200 chart.
“Wow, this is a big thrill!” Parton said in a statement. “I owe a thank you to the fans who have always been there for me. Their support made this achievement possible.”

Dolly Parton’s promotional push behind her new album Rockstar has been as well-planned as a military operation. The country music superstar has been everywhere, from an hourlong interview on ABC earlier this month to the field at the University of Tennessee’s Neyland Stadium last weekend, where she sang the Volunteers’ rally song “Rocky Top.” On Thanksgiving Day, Parton continued her campaign, showing up in Arlington, Texas, to perform at AT&T Stadium during halftime of the Dallas Cowboys – Washington Commanders NFL game.
And, wow, did she make an entrance.

Dolly Parton isn’t done rocking yet. After sharing her new album Rockstar last week, our November cover star has returned with two new bonus tracks: Her rendition of the Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets to Paradise,” plus a new version of her classic “Jolene” featuring Måneskin.
The Måneskin-assisted version of “Jolene” is available exclusively with the digital download version of Rockstar on Parton’s website, though the country icon did share a preview of the duet on Instagram. It sounds like the new recording stays fairly faithful to the original, with Måneskin’s Damiano David taking on co-lead vocals with Parton.
“Jolene” appears on the deluxe edition of Rockstar, which also features guest features from Sting, Steve Perry, Joan Jett, Mick Fleetwood, Pat Benatar, Brandi Carlile, and many, many more. See a preview clip of Måneskin’s take on “Jolene” below.

Dolly Parton couldn’t wait more than a weekend to start expanding her new rock album, Rockstar, quipping on Instagram yesterday, “Surprise! Did you all think I was done?”
As part of the “download exclusive version” of the album, Parton has tacked on two extra tracks: A new rendition of her classic “Jolene” featuring Måneskin, as well as a cover of Eddie Money’s 1977 hit, “Two Tickets To Paradise.
As it stands, the two bonus cuts are only available if you purchase the downloadable version of Rockstar on Parton’s website.

Update, writethru: There was a varied offering at the international box office this weekend with newcomers from Hollywood and offshore markets, as well as notable holds, as we inch closer to full-on action later in October.
Big overseas entries included Mani Ratnam’s historical epic Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 in a strong debut in India and abroad. Also new was China’s Home Coming, which, although it did about 60M in the home market, wasn’t a patch on last year’s National Day blockbuster The Battle at Lake Changjin (more on those below).
Landing the top offshore debut for the studios was Paramount’s Smile with 14.5M from 58 markets, and 36.5M globally. The horror audience grinned in all areas with good word of mouth for the Parker Finn-directed movie that was also tops domestically.

Slipknot’s Corey Taylor has released a rendition of John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band’s 1983 song, “On the Dark Side,” the lead single from his upcoming EP Cmfb… Sides, set to arrive Feb. 25 via Roadrunner Records.

Zendaya will play Ronnie Spector in A24’s upcoming adaptation of the iconic rock and roll singer’s 1990 biography Be My Baby: How I Survived Mascara, Miniskirts, And Madness, according to Variety. The 24-year-old Zendaya recently made history as the youngest actress to win an Emmy lead actress in a drama series. She is only the second Black woman to win the award, after Viola Davis for her role on How to Get Away with Murder in 2015. Spector personally chose Zendaya to portray her.
Former Disney Channel star Zendaya won the Emmy for her role as Rue in HBO’s Euphoria, which is produced by A24. The independent entertainment company is teaming with New Regency again. They are also working with them on the Malcolm & Marie film and previously worked together on The Lighthouse, which was directed by Robert Eggers. Zendaya is in talks to star in a biopic about the life and career of Ronnie Spector, The Ronettes singer known for songs like “Be My Baby” and “The Best Part of Breakin’ Up,” that A24 and New Regency are teaming up on.
Marc Platt would produce the film, and A24 has acquired the life rights for Spector and the rights to Spector’s autobiography “Be My Baby,” which she wrote with Vince Waldron. No director or writer is formally attached.
Zendaya would also produce the film if her deal closes, and Spector would also executive produce with Johnathan Greenfield.
Ronnie Spector was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Ronettes in 2007 as the original “bad girl of rock and roll,” and the trio produced two Top 100 hits in 1965 after being signed by Phil Spector, whom she married in 1968. After the group broke up, she launched...

Exclusive: A24 is putting together a film package that will have Emmy-winning Euphoria star Zendaya attached to play singer Ronnie Spector in a film about her life. Deals have just closed for Spector’s life rights and for Be My Baby, the memoir she wrote with Vince Waldron. I’m hearing that early conversations are happening with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury to write the script.
The film will be produced by Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Mark Itkin, Tom Shelly and Zendaya. Jonathan Greenfield and Spector will be the exec producers.

A judge has dismissed an age discrimination claim brought by former “Simpsons” composer Alf Clausen, who was fired from the show in 2017.
Judge Michael L. Stern granted a motion to strike the claim in a ruling on Friday, finding that Twentieth Century Fox had a free speech right to choose the composer for the show.
The producers have said in court filings that they decided to terminate Clausen after they became dissatisfied with his work on a hip-hop themed episode. The producers felt that Clausen, who was 75 at the time, was not comfortable with rap or hip-hop music, and they were worried about keeping the show relevant.
They also became concerned that Clausen was farming out much of the work to his son, according to court filings. The show ultimately hired Bleeding Fingers Music, a composer collective that made greater use of synth music, cutting the show’s music costs by 40%.

To be fair, the issue with various jokes and songs used in TV shows and movies and the clearance that’s needed for them gets a little ridiculous. But even with that in mind, the joke that pushed The Office’s budget over the line was one that they didn’t even think about it sounds like since taking a line from Eddie Money’s “two tickets to paradise” was costly enough that the price tag put the show way over for the one episode. From a monetary standpoint, the idea that it would cost so much for one line is absolutely insane, but

NBC has been home to quite a lot of successful comedy shows over the years, including such immensely popular series as Friends, Seinfeld, Parks and Recreation and 30 Rock. But as beloved as all of those shows have remained, one specific workplace series has become one of modern television’s most influential entries and is still one of Netflix’s most consistently viewed shows even over half a decade after its final episode aired.
The Office has captivated fans all over the world with its lovable and fallible characters, outrageously funny writing and cringe-inducing moments that can make even the most stoic person writhe in humorous discomfort. A decade after Best Coast released their indie-pop breakthrough “Sun Was High (and So Was I),” the band has cleaned up its act. Four years have passed since its last LP, California Nights, and frontwoman Bethany Cosentino has sobered up and turned her life around. By 1979, Loretta Lynn had been recording country music for almost 20 years, with some 50 albums to her credit. The first female artist to be nominated for — and to win — the Cma Entertainer of the Year award in 1972, Lynn’s string of major solo hits was accompanied by five Number Ones with duet partner Conway Twitty. The death of Ginger Baker today at age 80 is a harsh reminder that the superstars of the 1950s-1970s rock era are reaching an age where fragile health becomes more and more common.
The recent deaths of Ric Ocasek, Eddie Money and others hangs heavy over the genre’s fans, and serves notice that those who are still out there performing should be savored for their longevity and vitality.
This week in music:
Farewell To Ginger, Perhaps An Era: The death of Cream and Blind Faith drummer Ginger Baker at age 80 has rocked the Baby Boomer community that remembers his heyday. But even more saddening is the thought that those who dominated in his era are now in that magic 75-80 range. Here is a list of the still-living rock stars, some of them still performing.
Artificially Intelligent And Prolific: Truly busy musicians may release one or two albums and several tracks per year.

Post Malone’s Hollywood’s Bleeding enjoyed a second consecutive week atop the Rs 200. After clearing half a million album-equivalent units during its debut week, Hollywood’s Bleeding added 193,000 more in the latest tracking week. While Malone sold over 22,000 copies, his second-week total was primarily driven by more than 209 million streams.
That streaming count lifted Malone past The Lumineers, whose album III — their first full-length since 2016 — arrived at Number Two. Album sales accounted for a hefty chunk of the Lumineers’ 90,000 units. Taylor Swift’s Lover took third place on the Rs 200, earning 64,000 album-equivalent units.

As he himself would have admitted, Eddie Money was no one’s idea of a conventional rock star. His stage moves were always a little gawky and spasmodic, his borderline hoarse voice in need of a lozenge or two. Emerging during the punk era though never part of it, he preferred the stadium-friendly shout-along choruses of mainstream rock and adopted the suit-and-tie New Wave look while keeping his hair unfashionably long. He was even an NYPD cop — a career move that, while utterly honorable, didn’t jibe with the traditional,...

By the time “It’s Nice to Have a Friend” arrives on Lover, her seventh and most epic album, Taylor Swift has entered uncharted territory. For one thing, it’s the 17th song here, and none of her previous albums have run more than 16 tracks. (Lover actually contains 18.) More importantly, it’s not about being 16 or 22 or even her not-insignificant current age, 29. It’s about being six or seven, and walking home from school in the snow: “Lost my gloves / You give me one / Wanna hang out? / Sounds like fun.

How can you tell when a movie star is committed to being taken seriously? It’s hard to ignore when someone like Matthew McConaughey drops a ton of weight, the way he did to play an emaciated HIV patient in “Dallas Buyers Club.” It’s also impressive when such an actor swings hard in the opposite direction, packing on the pounds, thinning out his hair, and masking his prom-king choppers with a set of crooked veneers, as McConaughey did for “Gold.” Stunts like that have forced audiences to reevaluate him as more than just a superficially handsome stud.
In Harmony Korine’s “The Beach Bum,” disguised beneath stringy Hulk Hogan-style hair, cheap flip-up baseball shades, and an ugly yellow snaggletooth, McConaughey shows the same kind of commitment in the role of Moondog — pot head and unofficial poet laureate of the Florida Keys — only this time, he’s unlikely to command the same respect.
