Since January 2, the four motion picture guilds comprising makeup artists & hairstylists, costume designers, art directors, and sound mixers have announced their nominations for the year’s best work in their respective fields. While there has been plenty of variation in their choices, all four organizations have shown solidarity in recognizing three films: “Barbie,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer”. All of these rank among our top 10 Best Picture candidates, with “Oppenheimer” in first place, “Barbie” in third, and “Maestro” in sixth.
Six of the remaining nine guilds will be heard from over the next week, starting with both the actors and directors on Jan. 10. They will be followed in order by the cinematographers (Jan. 11), producers (Jan. 12), sound editors (Jan. 15), and visual effects artists (Jan. 16), all of whom will reveal their awards finalists during the Oscar nominations voting period.

While Pixar has delivered innovative characters in recent years, including the ethereal Joe from “Soul” and the illuminating Joy from “Inside Out,” they aren’t nearly as complex as the fiery Ember and watery Wade in the upcoming “Elemental.” These two stars of Peter Sohn’s rom-com and immigrant story (which closes the Cannes Film Festival on May 27 prior to its June 16 theatrical opening) represent the studio’s most fully simulated characters, which required creating new tools for rigging and performance along with establishing a new VFX-driven workflow.

Last week, Walt Disney Pictures released the first photo, a promo title treatment, for Pixar's next short film, Day & Night, directed by Teddy Newton. The photo, seen above, featured two characters, one filled with day, the other filled with night. At the time we speculated that the short might be a 2D animated film, and not the computer animated short film we're use to from Pixar. Okay, so maybe a more accurate title would have been Pre-Order this, but if you're a fan of Pixar and the artists behind the name, then you might want to head over to Amazon to place your order for the Ancient Book of Sex and Science. The book was created by Pixar animation designers, Nate Wragg, Scott Morse, Lou Romano, and Don Shank, and like the title says is all about the relationship between sex and science. This is the second book in a planned series of four, beginning with The Ancient Book Of Myth And War. Morse explained the genesis of the latest book and his love of all things saucy by saying, "Well, we're usually pretty introverted, so maybe that makes us a little kinkier. And there's a tradition of us loving Playboy cartoons and naughtier things in general. We all remember drawing in the margins of our textbooks when we were younger.
