The infamous Satanic Panic is often referred to as the 20th century equivalent of the Salem Witch Trials, with innocent heavy metal fans and Dungeons & Dragons players being accused of worshipping Satan while apocalyptic conspiracy theories about the rise of the Antichrist and the supposed “Mark of the Beast” ran rampant amongst radical believers. However, what a lot of people don’t know is that horror cinema played an accidentally crucial role in inspiring this regrettable era of prejudice and misinformation.
In fact, there are a handful of specific horror films that informed most of the fears we now associate with the Satanic Panic, with some of the most influential being Richard Donner’s 1977 classic The Omen and its numerous follow-ups. Despite playing fast and loose with their religious influences, these movies would go on to popularize then-obscure bits of biblical lore (like the Satanic connotations of “666”) that most...

The episode of The Best of the Bad Guys focusing on Damien Thorn was written, narrated, and edited by Mike Holtz.
The Prince of Darkness. Heir to both Hell and Thorn Industries. The antichrist himself and guy who gets his haircut at Great Clips, Damien Thorn. The titular character of The Omen franchise will be praised not by his usual followers but by us as we dive into the second edition of The Best Of The Bad Guys, where we rank the best work of cinema’s most evil villains.
Damien Thorn’s run of evil has spanned five films including an utterly pointless shot-for-shot remake and a TV series with another prequel on the way in The First Omen. And though The Omen IV: The Awakening doesn’t follow Damien himself; his presence is felt. The franchise started in 1976 with legendary director Richard Donner giving us the first version...

The Omen was a blessed success upon its release, earning a spot among the top 10 highest-grossing films of 1976. One of those ticket buyers was Wes Craven, who had already made his debut with The Last House on the Left and was gearing up for his sophomore film, The Hills Have Eyes.
“I remember thinking, ‘Big studio, won’t have a cutting edge to it. Gregory Peck, how can he be scary? I like him, but.’ And it was. I was totally amazed,” the master of horror recalled in a 2006 DVD special feature in which he waxes poetic about The Omen for some 20 minutes.
“I think [Richard] Donner is just one of our primo filmmakers.” Craven had been watching the future Superman and The Goonies director’s work since his early days helming episodes of classic TV shows like The Twilight Zone and Gilligan’s Island. “Every so often, he just knocks something...

This article contains major spoilers for "The First Omen."Hello folks! Welcome back to Nunsploitation 2024: Battle of the Babies.
When last we left the saga of Damien Thorn, it was 1981, and Damien was played by the devilishly handsome Sam Neill in "The Final Conflict." In that film, the Antichrist nearly fulfilled his evil purpose in halting the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, but was foiled by his one-time lover, journalist Kate Reynolds (Lisa Harrow), who through the grace of God and her own strength was able to fatally stab Damien with the magical dagger of Megiddo, the weapon that poor Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck) failed to use against his adopted son Damien (Harvey Spencer Stephens) when he was a child in 1976.
If a 33-year-old Damien in 1981 seems implausible given that the first film sees Damien as merely five years of age and the 1978 sequel, "Damien: Omen II" follows the...

20th Century Studios’ The First Omen is a true prequel to The Omen, arriving almost fifty years after the Richard Donner-directed horror classic introduced Antichrist Damien Thorn and terrified audiences. The film’s legacy is front and center in an exclusive new featurette.
First released in 1976, The Omen stars Gregory Peck as affluent diplomat Robert Thorn. It begins on June 6, at 6 am in Rome, where Robert Thorn learns his newborn has died, and the Church convinces him to accept an orphaned infant in its place. Robert’s wife, Kathy (Lee Remick), is none the wiser.
As the child, Damien, turns five, it coincides with a wave of strange happenings and coincidences that leads Robert down a harrowing journey where he’ll discover his adoptive son may be the Antichrist.

When it comes to religious horror movies, filmmakers have long delighted in pushing boundaries, crafting tales steeped in blasphemy and the sacrilegious. These don’t just tiptoe around the edge of sacrilege; they dive headfirst into the abyss of the unholy. They challenge the sanctity of the sacred, turning hallowed ground into a playground for the profane and the demonic. This sub-genre of horror is not for the faint of heart, as it boldly questions and often subverts deeply-held beliefs, making it a thrilling ride for those who dare to question what’s held sacred.
From demonic possessions to unholy rituals, these films unflinchingly explore the darkest corners of religious belief and practice. They are the cinematic equivalent of forbidden fruit, offering a taste of the ultimate horror taboo: a forsaken, godless world. As we delve into the underbelly of religious horror cinema, we find a treasure trove of films that not only scare,...

In 1976, audiences met Damien, a child who may or may not be the Antichrist! (Spoiler: he absolutely is). Cashing in on the religious horror craze jump-started by 1973's "The Exorcist," Richard Donner's "The Omen" follows a diplomat (Gregory Peck) who comes to believe his adopted son is the spawn of Satan. Meanwhile, anyone who gets close to the truth seems to end up dead in horrific ways. The end result is an effective horror flick with a killer musical score courtesy of Jerry Goldsmith.
Since "The Omen" is nearly 50 years old, many of the film's cast — and its director — have shuffled off this mortal coil. But two of the film's major players are still with us. So let's take a look at the only major actors still alive from 1976's "The Omen."

‘The First Omen’ Trailer Features a Hidden Reverse Soundbite That Calls Back to the Original Classic
20th Century Studios released the official trailer for The First Omen this morning, a brand new prequel to the classic horror franchise that’s coming to theaters on April 5, 2024.
In the film, “When a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.”
Today’s first-look trailer ran only a minute long and featured very little footage from the upcoming movie, giving us only a small taste of the prequel storyline. All of the footage was eerily presented in reverse – the new movie is, after all, going back to the beginning – giving us glimpses of the new characters played by Nell Tiger Free, Ralph Ineson and Bill Nighy.

Serving as a prequel to Richard Donner’s 1976 horror classic, The First Omen is coming to cinemas on the 5th April 2024.
Hollywood’s love of horror continues! Following the success of The Exorcist: Believer, Five Nights At Freddy’s and Saw X, The First Omen is unleashed in cinemas next year.
The First Omen is a prequel to Richard Donner’s classic horror film The Omen, which revolved around the Thorn family who are raising, unbeknownst to mother Kathy, the Antichrist.
The Omen spawned three sequels as well as a 2006 remake starring Julia Stiles and Liev Schreiber, but the original remains the most memorable and, frankly, terrifying film in the franchise. Films such as The Babadook, Let The Right One In and The Orphan owe a lot to the success and persuasive mood of The Omen.

Disney had April 5 on hold and that’s now being designated to 20th Century Studios’ psychological thriller The First Omen, the prequel to the classic 1976 horror film.

Just over four months ago, it was announced that Nell Tiger Free of the Apple TV+ series Servant had signed on to star in First Omen, a prequel to the horror classic The Omen (watch it Here). Details on the character Free would be playing weren’t revealed, but it would be her first leading role in a major studio film. And unlike the survival thriller Fall Into Darkness, which Free was cast in back in 2021, First Omen actually got made. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Free confirmed that First Omen has already wrapped production and it might even be ready for a 2023 release.
When asked what she could say about First Omen, Free replied, “I can tell you that we have finished shooting. We have made the movie. It matches Servant with how much I truly loved the project and how excited I am about it. Even...

From huggable dolls coming to life as voodoo-powered murderers to lovable St. Bernards becoming rabid monsters, there’s nothing more disturbing than the subversion of innocence. That’s why the horror genre is simply chock-full of creepy children. From ghostly apparitions to undead cannibals, these pint-sized horrors make great villains precisely because of their disarming demeanor. After all, like Narciso Ibáñez’s 1976 film once asked: Who Can Kill a Child?
Of course, not all killer kids are created equal, and after our previous article celebrating some of the best Final Kids in horror, we thought that it was time to give the juvenile villains a chance to shine with a list celebrating six of the best evil child performances in horror movies. After all, every evildoer has to start somewhere…

Horror has always been a matter of perspective. The maniac with a knife just isn’t as intimidating when he’s facing off against a Swat team, and the only thing keeping Predator from turning into an all-out slasher flick is the size of the protagonists’ biceps. It’s a lot easier to fear for a helpless victim, and that’s why it makes sense that so many scary stories focus on children and childhood fears.
After all, what’s more vulnerable than a child? And with so many child-centric scary movies out there, we’ve come up with this list celebrating six of the best “Final Kid” performances in horror.
Talented child actors are hard to come by, so I think it’s time to shine a light on the pint-sized survivors that helped to make some of our favorite horror flicks so memorable.
While this list is based on personal opinion,...

Crane Wilbur’s The Bat is a murder mystery starring Agnes Moorehead and Vincent Price—but the real mystery is how Hollywood managed to pair these diabolically funny entertainers in only one film. They shared little to no screen time in 1951’s The Adventures of Captain Fabian and 1957’s The Story of Mankind, but in Wilbur’s mild-mannered horror show, Moorehead and Price are toe to toe—and generate enough chemistry for a dozen lovably corny crime thrillers just like The Bat.
Despite Price’s presence it’s Moorehead’s show; she plays Cornelia Van Gorder, a prolific mystery writer in the mode of Mary Roberts Rinehart—who, not coincidentally, wrote The Circular Staircase, the source material for the The Bat. As the no-nonsense Van Gorder, Moorehead’s steely...

Plenty of actors have played Abraham Lincoln well, but the actor still most associated with the role is Raymond Massey, who starred in Robert E. Sherwood’s Pulitzer Prizewinning play. The film version was not a hit, as Sherwood’s aim is to capture the melancholy, even the foreboding, of a man who was a natural for politics. In this reading Lincoln tries to resist his ‘call to greatness’ knowing he’s letting himself in for an unhappy life. The Warner Archive’s restoration retrieves the film from old 16mm prints, restoring James Wong Howe’s handsome cinematography.

Six years have gone by since we first heard that 20th Century Fox was developing a prequel to the horror classic The Omen (watch it Here), a prequel that was to be titled The First Omen. Now going by the slightly shorter title First Omen, the project is still moving forward after Fox was acquired by Disney. A few months ago, it was announced that the film will be directed by Arkasha Stevenson – who has previously directed episodes of the genre shows Channel Zero, Legion, and Brand New Cherry Flavor. Now Deadline reports that First Omen has found its lead, as Nell Tiger Free of the Apple TV+ series Servant has signed on to star in the film. This will be her first leading role in a major studio film.

As we learned earlier this year, 20th Century Studios has called upon the Antichrist once again with The First Omen, a brand new official prequel to their The Omen franchise.
Deadline reports today that Nell Tiger Free (“Servant”) will star in the upcoming film.
“Legion,” “Channel Zero: Butcher’s Block” and “Brand New Cherry Flavor” director Arkasha Stevenson will be making her feature directorial debut with The First Omen.
Stevenson will also handle the rewrite of the film, alongside writing partner Tim Smith. Smith is set to executive produce with Phantom Four producing.
The original 1976 classic, which starred Gregory Peck, Lee Remick and Harvey Stephens, followed an American ambassador who believes his five-year-old son is the Antichrist.
That film spawned three sequels, including 1978’s Damien: Omen II and 1981’s The Final Conflict, as well as the 2006 reboot. There was also a short-lived “Damien” television series.

If you’re a fan of ‘80s cinema, you’ve seen at least one Richard Donner movie. The Bronx-born director, who died July 5 at the age of 91, got his start directing off-Broadway plays and TV shows before transitioning into film. After working on “The Twilight Zone,” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” “Gilligan’s Island,” and “Perry Mason,” Donner went on to helm blockbusters and cult classics such as the “Lethal Weapon” and “Superman” franchises, “The Goonies,” “The Omen,” and “Scrooged.” He also served as executive producer on “Any Given Sunday,” the “Free Willy” franchise, “X-Men,” and “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”
Below, six of the best Donner-directed films that absolutely need to be in your Blu-ray collection.

The supernatural and the religious often become intertwined in battles for souls and psyches in horror cinema, and with the rising popularity of movies such as The Conjuring films and the enduring legacy of franchises like Hellraiser, House of Leaves Publishing is bringing the discussion of faith-based and worship-centric horror to the printed page in the new book Scared Sacred: Idolatry, Religion and Worship in the Horror Film. As Summer came to an end in 1975, production began on one of the more well-known entries in the horror film canon. A chilling portrayal that depicts the foretold arrival of the Antichrist and the inevitable end of times, The Omen came hot off the success of The Exorcist, a frightening and devilish adaptation that had changed the landscape of the movie genre forever.
The Exorcist had been a monstrous hit. To this day, it ranks as one of the top-grossing horror films of all time, having earned over $232 million in revenue. It also earned a staggering 10 Academy Award nominations, which included best picture, best actress, best actor, best supporting actress, and best director. With this kind of success, it seemed like The Omen would be a surefire hit; producer Harvey Bernhard had counted on that. What he might not have expected, though, was the strange set of occurrences that would...

I have the softest of spots for Satanic Panic horror, from Rosemary’s Baby (1968) to The Exorcist (1973) to The Devil’s Rain (‘75) up to The Devil’s Advocate (1997) and beyond. There’s just something about Old Scratch pulling the strings on the ill-begotten and innocent alike that makes me giddy. One of the most successful iterations is 1976’s The Omen, wherein Beelzebub sends his little guy into the world to stir things up and make it hard for A-list actors to keep straight faces. But they somehow do, resulting in one of my very favorite devil-dipped ‘70s flicks.

Horror fans have something new to scream about as 20th Century Fox is planning a prequel to The Omen. According to THR.com, the studio is looking to revisit the 1976 classic about a young boy who may just be the son of Satan. That movie, which starred Gregory Peck and Lee Remick and was directed by Richard Donner, won an Oscar for Best Original Score. It also earned Harvey Stephens a Golden Globe nomination for his role as Damian. The publication is reporting that Fox is looking to Antonio Campos as a potential director. Campos was most recently behind the camera for the film Christine. That movie is about the on-air suicide by television reporter Christine Chubbuck. The Omen grossed an inflation-adjusted $240 million. It also led three follow-ups: Damien: The Omen Part II (1978), Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981) and the made-for-tv Omen IV: The Awakening (1991). The original movie was remade...

Our series on remakes continues with a film which is more of a duplication than an actual remake. This week, Cinelinx looks at The Omen (2006).
If you’ve seen the original version of The Omen (1976) and then you watch the remake from 2006, you have to ask “Why did they even bother?” The remake was barely even a remake. It was a shot-for-shot, scene -for-scene copy of the original. Released on the 30th anniversary of the original, it offered absolutely nothing new, except a more modern cast and some mediocre CGI effects. Other than that, this is a completely unnecessary, gratuitous photo-copy of the first version.
About this film Rolling Stone Magazine wrote, “Not since Gus Van Sant inexplicably directed a shot by shot remake of Hitchcock’s Psycho has a thriller been copied with so little point or impact”. Recently, we did a dissection of the Van Sant remake of...

24 years ago today, Uncle Jesse took a new step as a dad when his and Becky’s twins were born in a season 5 episode of “Full House.” With two back-to-back episodes penned by series creator Jeff Franklin, the November 12, 1991 hour of “Full House” started with Michelle’s fifth birthday party, featuring a series of flashbacks about the character played by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Michelle, afraid of losing her status as the baby of the family since Becky’s pregnant, declares she’s going to stay four years old. But another series of flashbacks changes her mind. When Becky’s babies come earlier than expected, Michelle ends up sharing her birthday with the twins, and she wonders whether that will be a good thing. When Jesse — who has spent the episode dealing with sympathy pains — tells Michelle that this will mean three birthday cakes, she says, “That’s a very good thing.

Here's the thing about "The Omen": it's probably not as good as you remember. There are a few truly scary moments -- remember the nanny scene? -- but in the realm of '70s horror films it's a "B" at best. Nevertheless, the film is generally considered a horror classic and holds massive brand appeal, a fact that A&E will be exploiting with their newly-announced ten-episode series "Damien," which will star Bradley James as the now-adult title character as he comes to terms "with his true destiny -- that he is the Antichrist." Also set to star is the truly terrifying Barbara Hershey as Ann Rutledge, "the world's most powerful woman who has been tasked with making sure Damien fulfills his destiny." So, herself. Good luck with this, I guess! I can't imagine people won't watch. That said, nothing in the series will come close to the impact...

Although Maggie's life looks perfect from the outside, she's got just as many self-destructive secrets at Milo. Sweet and sad, this is definitely Wiig's best dramatic role to date.

Aussie horror The Babadook, which is currently in UK cinemas and reaches the Us next week, is one of the scariest films of the year. Like a lot of the best fear-flicks, much of its ability to terrify comes down to one truly creepy kid.
In director Jennifer Kent's harrowing debut, six-year-old Samuel (Noah Wiseman) discovers a book called Mister Babadook, which just so happens to coincide with creepy occurrences at home that his mother (Essie Davis) blames on Samuel's overactive imagination. If we reveal any more, we'll ruin the film's surprises, but suffice to say that Samuel's behaviour is every bit as unnerving as the monster that could be lurking in his house.
He's not the only movie kid putting us off parenthood for life. Also responsible for giving Digital Spy a severe case of paedophobia (or fear of children) are these terrifying tots...

After a series of sequels and a lackluster remake, I suppose it was inevitable that The Omen would be heading to the small screen, as has recently become the norm for popular horror franchises.
A spin-off made-for-tv flick is indeed in the works, and we've got the latest for ya today. Dig in!
THR reports that former "Walking Dead" showrunner Glen Mazzara is prepping Damien for Lifetime, a series based on the popular franchise that rose from the depths of Hell in 1976. Mazzara will pen the script and executive produce via his 44 Strong Productions banner.
Titled Damien, the drama centers on the film's young boy Damien Thorn. Now an adult and haunted by his past, Damien is faced with a series of macabre events and must finally face his true destiny: he is the Antichrist.
Ross Fineman ("Lights Out") will also executive produce via his Ftvs-based Fineman Entertainment.

Linda Blair starred as the head-spinning, projectile-vomiting and crucifix-stabbing child in 1973's controversial The Exorcist.
A few years after the film's release, Blair encountered trouble with the law when charged with possession of drugs and conspiracy to sell. She managed to turn her career around by the early '80s, going on...

Horror films are often filled with decapitations, amputations, disembowelment, and more; particularly with the introduction of the so-called "torture porn" subgenre, we're seeing a higher level of violence and excess. Sometimes it’s effective; other times watching the film’s cast of characters endure the kind of violence we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemy is kind of a turn-off. What we don’t see a lot of these days, though, is a horror film that actually shies away from on-screen violence, opting for atmosphere over arterial spray... but those films's aren't impossible to find. For a recent example, James Wan's The Conjuring, which opened this summer with a massive $41.5 million, relies on clapping hands, immobile dolls, and creeping shadows to terrify the audience. In fact, some of our most beloved films from years past are less intense than we might remember them. There have been several times...

In the Hollywood horror thriller, said to be one of the best in the genre, Harvey Stephens played the Devil's son Damien perfectly.
"Right now my focus is on the child artist. We need the right child to play the lead in the film. We are desperately hunting for the child," Mahadkar, who ventured into direction with Kunal Khemu starrer crime thriller "Blood Money", told Ians.
However, there is no.

With guys like Fred Krueger, Jason Voorhees and Leatherface dominating the cinematic slaughter scene (the new Texas Chainsaw killed the competition this weekend), it’s easy for horror fans to forget about the little people. But, we at FEARnet embrace the little people and think that they deserve their moment in the spotlight just as much as the big guns. So, we have put together a list of underrated psychopaths in horror cinema who we would like to thank for their thoughtful contributions to the horror genre.
The Dentist
Corbin Bernsen does crazy quite well. His performance as a psychotic dentist who wants to rid the world of filth is what makes The Dentist as enjoyable as it is. The film itself is just Ok, but Bernsen's performance is great. Watch out for Mark Ruffalo in one of his first feature film roles. The Dentist 2 goes a little off the rails.
