Subscription video-on-demand service Stan expects to announce at least two more development deals with Australian producers in the next couple of months.
The platform co-owned by Nine Entertainment Co (NEC) and Fairfax Media sees Australian original content as a key point of differentiation with competitors Presto Movies/Presto TV and with Netflix, which is due to launch in Australia/New Zealand on March 28.
The number of Aussie projects it will commission will depend partly on its ability to raise finance from other sources including international broadcasters or co-producers.
.We have a fixed amount to spend so the key will be to find overseas partners for co-funding at an early stage,. Nick Forward, Stan.s director of content and product, tells If.
.That may mean more reliance on international cast or co-commissions with subscription VoD and premium cable players who make a lot of this sort of content..

Bob Reuter’S Last Tape tells the story of one of St. Louis’ finest storytellers — not only through his songs, but photographs and interviews as well as testimonials from those who knew him. The result is a vivid and intimate portrait of the late Bob Reuter, an iconic St. Louis underground artist. Through a series of confessions recorded before his untimely death, Reuter examines his personal successes and failures alongside his artistic achievements. In this collage-like film from director Josh Rolens, Bob explores the complexity of his life, moving between memory and narrative, and journeying into the darker and more difficult times. Reuter shares the losses he experienced as a child and adult, the immense health issues that burdened him, and his decision to let go of his worries and focus on expressing himself as an artist. Spanning more than 40 years of artistic creation — including songwriting, photography, and stream-of-consciousness monologues...

Of all the canards foisted upon and between culture fans in 2013, there was none more dubious than the notion that the supposed “battle” of television vs. film had come to an end, with the former declared the victor. Besides the fact that comparing such disparate mediums is a fool’s errand at best, both are such vast and complicated enterprises that any pitched battle likely only pits narrow conceptions of each against the other. (Strawman vs. strawman, the most popular form of discourse on the Internet.) The simplest way to invalidate the entire argument quickly: where films only have to be taken on their own terms as one complete work, TV series need to be considered in at least three contexts: by episode, by season, and by the overall run of the series.
With several shows ending their runs this year, including Breaking Bad, Dexter, Southland, Spartacus, and The Killing (up until its latest resurrection,...

From new voices like NoViolet Bulawayo to rediscovered old voices like James Salter, from Dave Eggers's satire to David Thomson's history of film, writers, Observer critics and others pick their favourite reads of 2013. And they tell us what they hope to find under the tree …

My favourite books of 2013 are Drama High (Riverhead) by Michael Sokolove, Sea Creatures (Turnaround) by Susanna Daniel, and & Sons (Harper Collins) by David Gilbert. Drama High is incredibly smart, moving non-fiction about an American drama teacher who for four decades coaxed sophisticated and nuanced theatrical performances out of teenage students who weren't privileged or otherwise remarkable and in so doing, changed their conceptions of what they could do with their lives. Sea Creatures is a gripping, beautifully written novel about the mother of a selectively mute three-year-old boy; when she takes a job ferrying supplies to a hermit off the coast of Florida,...

This story first appeared in the July 27 issue of The Hollywood Reporter. While most Americans spent July 4 surrounded by BBQs and beers, Bert Fields was jetting to New York to negotiate Tom Cruise's divorce settlement with Katie Holmes. The trip would kick off a 10-day period that saw the 83-year-old seamlessly handle business for clients James Cameron and The Weinstein Co. while also managing to catch a movie with Dustin Hoffman, cook dinners at home, read poetry to his wife and put out dozens of media fires that erupted from the Cruise divorce. Complete List:

Exclusive: I’m hearing that Magnolia Pictures is set to close a U.S. deal for Fernando Meirelles’ sexual drama 360, which opened the 55th BFI London Film Festival last night. Artificial Eye is also in talks to release 360 here in the UK on March 3 2012, I understand. Co-produced by Revolution Films, the UK production company behind IFC’s The Trip, the Peter Morgan-scripted feature follows a sexual circle of prostitution, infidelity and true love. Anthony Hopkins, Rachel Weisz and Jude Law star. Paris-based sales agent Wild Bunch is selling the BBC Films-backed project internationally. Reviews here this morning have been pretty muted: The Daily Telegraph summed up the film as a “glossily unengaging trudge through other people’s love lives,” describing one moment where a character imagines a plane carrying away his lover as “spectacularly stupid.” The Times of London gives the film a pretty dismissive 3-star review,...

A few weeks ago we asked readers to submit up to five of their favorite movies in our third annual favorite gay film poll. We wanted to see which older gay films have timeless appeal and which recent gay films you judged important enough to register in the rankings.
After voting closed we sorted through the nearly 15,000 nominations (representing over 500 individual titles) to identify your top fifty favorite gay films.
Tabulating this data is actually a bit harder than it sounds. For instance, do you know how many different ways our readers can type/abbreviate "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert?" We counted about a dozen!
But we're not complaining, because the list that resulted this year is actually rather interesting.
Nine new films made their way into the rankings, and five of these are of very recent vintage. This represents a strong showing for current queer cinema.

Courteney Arquette couldn’t join her hubby David during a recent trip to Vegas, so she sent her niece instead!
David Arquette taught his niece an important lesson over President’s Day weekend: what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. The actor hosted a dinner party Feb. 15 at the Palazzo’s swanky Italian restaurant Lavo to celebrate the opening of his clothing line, Propr. But when his wife, Courteney couldn’t make it, he treated his niece to her first ever Sin City trip. Freakin’ sweet.
“Everyone kept cracking up because David said his biggest fear of the trip was that he would lose his wife’s niece,” an insider at the intimate dinner told HollywoodLife.com.
Courteney, 45, was busy filming her ABC sitcom Cougar Town in Los Angeles and had to miss the celebration, but sources say David, 38, showed their 21-year-old niece a fabulous night on the town.
