There aren’t many stories as grody as the one being told in Mope. For those who don’t know the true tale, I’ll keep the salacious details to be discovered, but for those who know what this film is about, it isn’t hard to imagine the avenues being taken here. While the flick is pretty grimy, there’s an undercurrent of trying for something more. Mope doesn’t pull it off, despite its Boogie Nights ambitions, but it is somewhat encouraging to see the concept not executed with a lowest common denominator feel. You’ll need a shower after watching this, but you’ll also be left with a bit to think about. It’s a missed opportunity, but one not without some redeeming qualities. The movie is a mix of comedy and drama, leading up to tragedy. For those aware of the true story, this is...

The world may be upside down, but the Hugo Awards are forever! The Hugos are the longest-running fan-voted awards in the genres of science fiction and fantasy, first bring presented in 1953. The awards are generally given out during the World Science Fiction Convention, which is in a different host city every year. Sadly, the 78th Worldcon, aka CoNZealand, set to take place in (you guessed it) New Zealand, will have to be virtual this year. The Hugo ceremony will therefore also take place online.
Today, CoNZealand announced the finalists for this year’s Hugos, voted on by 1,584 people, who submitted 27,033 nominations. Those who were members of last year’s Worldcon, An Irish Worldcon, and members of this year’s Worldcon, CoNZealand, were eligible to vote, however, only CoNZealand members will be able to vote on the final ballot and choose the winners. A weekend getaway goes sour even before the corpses start accruing in “Trespassers,” a good-looking indie thriller that’s diverting, but could have used another script draft or two. Depicting two quarrelsome if hard-bodied couples who find themselves in deep peril at a rented desert home, Orson Oblowitz’s film has a leisurely enough buildup that room should have been made for more fully developed characters. Fine-tuning the pileup of eventual violent crises wouldn’t have hurt, either. The result falls short of being especially credible, let alone memorable. Still, this is a polished genre exercise that provides a decent night’s home entertainment. IFC Midnight is opening it July 12 on screens in New York and Los Angeles, simultaneous with its launch on demand.

The Pet Sematary hype is real. The new adaptation of Stephen King’s 1983 novel is now in theaters with directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer in the driver’s seat. The movie once again unearths the tragedy and grief suffered by the Creed family after they relocate to rural Maine and fall victim to a creepy burial ground that has the power to reanimate the dead. For those who remain unsold on a new version of a story that likely disrupted their childhoods, look no further than Kölsch and Widmyer’s 2014 film, Starry Eyes, to see the horrors in store in the new take on King’s iconic tale.
Starry Eyes tells the story of a young woman named Sarah (Alex Essoe), who’s hoping to live out her dream of making it as an actress in the rough-and-tumble town of Los Angeles. She repeatedly endures torturous auditions while working...

You’ve done every film related job from producer and actor to cinematographer and editor. Was directing always the goal?
Poverty dictates…I would just take any position I could and figure it out from there, especially when I made The Queen Of Hollywood Blvd. where I just didn’t have the budget and had to take on as many positions as I could. Directing was always the ultimate goal though. Funny enough, the genesis of Hell came from a job I had done years before when I was camera operating on a feature film The Ganzfeld Experiment. It was a crazy production, and my dad was the director. The line producer of Ganzfeld was Julio Hallivis. We became friends and stayed in touch. Cut to five years later, I show Julio my first film The Queen of Hollywood Blvd. and he says “Hey man, I got a script I think you will dig.

Built on a foundation of successful and highly collectible soundtrack reissues, the debut issue from Waxwork Records’ House of Waxwork comic book series has quickly established itself as one of the most sought-after treats this Halloween season. A showcase of paperback scares, movie poster aesthetics, and a devilish “host” character (The Die-Rector), House of Waxwork oozes with nostalgic nods to both EC Comics and VHS horror. Waxwork also carves out a niche selling point for themselves by pairing up the comic with an original 7-inch soundtrack which will both immerse and entertain the reader. With issue one out now in both stores and online, Daily Dead caught up with Kevin Bergeron, co-owner of Waxwork Records, to chat about the past, present, and future of the Waxwork comic brand.
After establishing Waxwork as one of the premier soundtrack record labels, what made you want to branch off into comics? Was this always your intention?...

Have you watched "The Nightmare" on Netflix yet? As in, all of it? If the answer is "yes," you are a hardier mortal than I. Maybe it's because I live alone. Maybe it's because I've only tried watching it at night, with the lights out. Maybe it's because I've experienced the utter horror of sleep paralysis on more than one occasion and fear that watching the movie all the way through will somehow trigger it again. But whatever the reason, I haven't been able to finish "The Nightmare" yet. I have tried four times. I'm writing as someone who yawned through all three "Insidious" movies. I'm writing as someone who watched the excruciating "Martyrs" in a single sitting, no breaks. I'm writing as someone who has seen a lot -- a lot -- of horror films, and felt gripped by the hand of fear only a handful of times. But "The Nightmare" is different.

In Excess Flesh, we follow a mentally imbalanced woman by the name of Jill (Bethany Orr), whose preoccupation with her roommate Jennifer (Mary Loveless) and her own self-loathing pushes her sanity to the edge, changing the lives of both women forever. Co-written and directed by Patrick Kennelly, Excess Flesh does its best to explore the dangers of obsession in its many forms and society’s depiction of beauty, but ultimately comes up short, as the script never really goes much further than skin-deep with its often convoluted message and the finale doesn’t make much sense overall.
At the beginning, Excess Flesh starts off by reminding us of society’s horribly unrealistic physical standards and the unfortunate state of body-shaming thoughts which is all well and good. We meet Jill and Jennifer, the latter being involved with the fashion industry and fixated on looking perfect at all times. Jilly, a...

We here at Sound On Sight like to release our list as late as possible in the year. The way I look at it, the list is meant to represent what our writers have watched and championed throughout the year, and so we allow our writers until the 28th of December to submit votes for their 15 favourite films in the hope of coming up with a list that truly represents the wide spectrum of movies we cover year-round. This late in the game, it is safe to assume that just about every other website has released their top picks, but we believe our list holds value, if only because it is comprised of over 50 hardcore cinephiles worldwide. That said, since our writers are spread out across the globe, it makes it difficult for a movie like Inherent Vice (which was released in only two North American cities during 2014 itself) to crack our year-end list.

Only Lovers Left Alive (voted by Rick)
Only Lovers Left Alive, the latest film from cult indie director Jim Jarmusch, stars Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as Adam and Eve, two century old vampires. Adam is an underground musician with a dedicated cult following. In his past time, he drives through the city in his classic Jaguar, collects music memorabilia, photographs, books, vintage musical instruments and old vinyls. He lives in an isolated home in the ruins of Detroit Michigan where he reunites with his enigmatic lover Eve. There, he enlists the help of one of his most dedicated fans (Anton Yelchin) to help collect the analog equipment he needs, and his doctor (Jeffrey Wright) to provide him with a steady supply of his favourite drink, type O-negative. Immortality is weighing on him and thoughts of suicide slowly take over. Not much happens, and not much needs to.

Starry Eyes
Written and directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer
USA, 2014
This film is at its very core a success story. A very demented, gory, horrifying and darkly comical success story – one with tinges of satanic cult horror wrapped in psychological terror. The plot follows a young aspiring actress, Sarah, as she is called back to audition for a horror film that is being produced by a mysterious production company that pushes her to her limits – a dark exchange for fame and fortune.
The film works as much as comedy as it does multiple kinds of horror. The well-executed pitch of heightened reality that co-writers/directors Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer achieve allow them to play each scene for maximum thrills, scares and laughs. Even at the most grotesque moments of body horror, you can’t help but laugh in shock at what you’re witnessing. You’re laughing because you’re horrified,...

For their latest directorial collaboration, Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer explore the darker aspects of ambition and fame with their darkly satirical tale Starry Eyes. A blood-soaked cautionary tale about the price of fame and sacrificing your own identity in the name of ambition, Starry Eyes is yet another fantastic reminder that the indie genre world is truly the best (and generally only) place fans can find ambitious and challenging horror tales these days.

Starry Eyes
Written and directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer
U.S.A., 2014
Sometimes a person wants something so badly they are willing to go to extreme lengths in order to live their dream. It compels them, drawing them in like hypnosis. They feel incomplete and unfulfilled if they fail in their self-ordained mission to reach whatever goal they set their eyes on. Some things require more commitment than others. Visiting a coveted destination requires but some funds and a passport. Staying in shape is a little trickier because of the consistent demand of time and energy. Changing jobs can be another, but trying to land steady career in a field as treacherous and unsecure as acting is a whole different ballgame. Starry Eyes isn’t just a sleek slow-burn thriller with a dynamite third act, but it’s a punchy satirical look at the corrupt, disgusting world of struggling actresses and the major studios who take advantage of their desperate nature. We all dream of lavish celebrity lifestyles and worldwide fame, but at what price are we willing to pay? Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer tweak a dramatic, tragic scenario to create a provocative genre watch that utilizes the disgusting, terrifying nature of horror for exploitative purposes – but it works when exploring such seedy material. Horror movies with a backhanded message are always the most fun, because gracefully transforming reality into horror takes so much more finesse than whipping up yet another hack n’ slash splatterfest – which we still get a gleeful amount of.

Sorry Oscars. But after the Indie Spirit Awards, the number two spot in terms of Award Season importance are the Cinema Eye Honors. Seems like it was only yesterday when Aj Schnack & Thom Powers teamed up for one basic, logical concept: an event that would reward yearly output of documentary film in a rightfully sound manner. With the wind in their sails, the 6th annual edition was held last night and deservingly so, adding to its double wins at the Idfa and Sundance, it is 5 Broken Cameras that took the top honors for Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking. Co-directed by Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi – political activism via you guessed it, five video cameras. The film was released via Kino Lorber.

Variety has just reported that the documentary based on The Shining, which premiered at Sundance, has been picked up by IFC Midnight. The film isn’t necessarily a documentary on the making of the film but more about theories and why the film has resonated so long with film culture.
IFC Midnight announced has acquired North American rights to director Rodney Ascher’s documentary “Room 237,” which concerns the theories surrounding and within Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film “The Shining.”
The film, produced by Tim Kirk and scored by Jonathan Snipes and William Hutson, recently played at the Sundance Film Festival. IFC Midnight plans to release the film theatrically this year.
“Room 237″ includes interviews with the fans and scholars with wildly different ideas about the true meanings of the film.
The deal was negotiated by Jeff Deutchman, director of acquisitions and productions for Sundance Selects/IFC Films and Betsy Rodgers,...

Cristina Bercovitz has directed a short on the making of the soundtrack for Rodney Ascher's Room 237, a documentary about the plethora of theories that have sprung up over the years regarding just what Stanley Kubrick was up to when he made The Shining (1980). From the description posted at YouTube: "Kubrick's film was scored in large part with pre existing classical recordings, but the score for Room 237 has taken as its inspiration the elegant but quirky film music that accompanied low budget horror movies in the 1970s. Composers Jonathan Snipes and William Hutson utilize a combination of vintage and contemporary analogue synthesizers, as well as acoustic instruments to create an atmosphere that is at once both haunting and funky."
