On Friday, Paramount+ announced that “Apartment 7A,” a prequel to Roman Polanski’s legendary psychological thriller, is coming to the streaming service this fall.
The movie tells the story of what happened in the titular New York City apartment before Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow) moved in and became the unwilling mother to the son of Satan. It’s set in 1965 and follows a struggling, young dancer (three-time Emmy-winning “Ozark” star Julia Garner). After she suffers a devastating injury, she finds herself drawn in by dark forces when a peculiar, well-connected, older couple promises her a shot at fame.
The film also stars two-time Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest (“Hannah and Her Sisters”), Jim Sturgess (“Across the Universe”) and Kevin McNally (the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series), with Marli Siu (“Everything I Know About Love...

“Satan is his father and his name is Adrian!” shouts the coven leader Roman Castevet at the end of 1968’s. Rosemary’s Baby. “He shall overthrow the mighty and lay waste their temples. He shall redeem the despised and wreak vengeance in the name of the burned and the tortured.”
Even when making allowances for Roman’s (Sidney Blackmer) understandable delight at seeing his plan come to fruition, that’s a lot of expectation to put on a newborn, no matter who his father might be. Unfortunately, the sequels chronicling Adrian’s rise to power didn’t quite live up to those expectations. Neither the 1976 TV movie Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby, in which Patty Duke subs in for Mia Farrow, nor original author Ira Levin’s follow-up book Son of Rosemary (1997) manages to deliver what Roman promised.

Two years have gone by since a psychological thriller called Apartment 7A – which Relic (watch it Here) director Natalie Erika James helmed for Paramount Players and A Quiet Place collaborators Platinum Dunes and John Krasinski – wrapped filming. Soon after filming came to an end, rumors began to circulate that Apartment 7A was secretly a prequel to the 1968 classic Rosemary’s Baby… and now those rumors have been proven to be true! Deadline broke the news that Apartment 7A will finally be making its way out into the world this fall, as it’s set to receive a Paramount+ release in the U.S. and in select international markets, and in their report they confirmed that this is indeed a Rosemary’s Baby prequel. Maybe the fact that the Omen prequel The First Omen went over well with viewers inspired Paramount to finally release this horror prequel.

Few horror movies in the last several decades have left quite as much a psychological scar as "Rosemary's Baby" from 1968, a widespread cultural obsession among genre fans that has now led to a prequel film called "Apartment 7A," which has long been in the works and finally has a release window.
We first heard about "Apartment 7A" back in 2022, which was meant to tell the story of the eponymous apartment before Rosemary Woodhouse ever moved in and experienced the story's awful events. First told in author Ira Levin's best-selling novel, the main setting of that old, eerie-looking building on Central Park West ranks high among the likes of the Overlook Hotel from "The Shining," the Nostromo in "Alien," and other famous horror locales. Now, we're finally getting an origin story -- of sorts -- with ties going all the way back to the controversial Roman Polanski-directed classic.

Phoenix Raei gained international acclaim with his lead role in the Netflix series, Clickbait (2021). Though the crime drama created by Tony Ayres and Christian White introduced him to a global audience, Raei has been a part of the entertainment industry since the 2010s. His passion for acting dates back to his early life, when he would rather act and make films with his parents’ camera than play with toys. Despite his apparent knack for acting, Raei almost didn’t become an actor. Education was of prime importance to his parents and this made him study law in college. But as...

CAA has signed rising British star Rosy McEwen.
The actor, who was named to Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch for 2020, was not previously represented in the U.S., and will now be represented by the agency in all areas.
In 2022, McEwen won the British Independent Film Award for best lead performance for “Blue Jean.” She starred as Jean, a closeted teacher pushed to the brink when a new student threatens to expose her sexuality as Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government plans to pass a law stigmatizing gays and lesbians in 1988 England.
Variety exclusively announced that McEwen would take on the role — her first lead — in the film, written and directed by Georgia Oakley. “Jean is a woman forced to wear multiple masks in the different areas of her life, and as such she has this sort of taut, cloistered energy that Rosy has absolutely mastered,” Oakley stated at the time.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a universal language for loss? Imagine if in all the letting go, in all the unlearning of what was, there was something to grasp—not only a pattern to comprehend, but a way to understand each other while everything else dissolves? Oh, if we could learn the language. Maybe we’d catch how pain serrates our words before it cuts others. Maybe we too could experience the cathartic and collective wail Midsommar’s Dani felt, that bittersweet mixture of feeling our darkest of feelings without shame and in loving, nurturing hands. If loss had a language, it’d have countless dialects for innumerable sorrows.
Even after a decade of living it, I still don’t know how to talk about losing my father to dementia. Just when I think I’ve lost all I could, I discover something new to let go of: memory,...

That's the question plaguing viewers on the just-released trailer for the Netflix thriller Clickbait, which premieres August 25.
Nick Brewer (Adrian Grenier) is a loving father, husband, and brother, who one day suddenly and mysteriously disappears.
A video appears on the internet of the badly beaten Nick holding a card that says "I abuse women. At 5 million views, I die".
"Is this a threat or confession? Or both?" the Netflix description asks.

The latest limited series from Netflix looks to be drawing on a lot of topics seen swirling around social media, from bad men to internet conspiracy theories. Basedon the first trailer, which you can see below, “Clickbait” aims to be an edgy look at the ways we examine people and the simmering secrets that lie underneath.
The series tells the story of Nick Brewer (Adrien Grenier) who one day disappears. As his wife (Betty Gabriel) and sister (Zoe Kazan) start looking for him, a livestream pops up showing Nick holding signs alleging he’s beaten and murdered women. When the videos hit five million views Nick will die. Are the allegations true? Do they prove the seemingly perfect family man has something to hide? Or is this part of a twisted game by the kidnapper to illustrate the danger within society’s snap judgements?

Joanna Werner.
When Joanna Werner did a media course at Rmit she aimed to be journalist but her career took a different path as the head of Werner Film Productions.
So when Michael Lucas, whom she had met in a writers’ room five years ago, pitched her his concept of a drama set in TV newsroom, she jumped at the idea.
After a lengthy development process the ABC commissioned The Newsreader, which follows the unlikely bond between a young TV reporter and a ‘difficult’ female newsreader.
Emma Freeman will direct the six-part series scripted by Lucas (who co-created Five Bedrooms with Christine Bartlett), Jonathan Gavin, Niki Aken and Kim Ho, which is now in pre-production in Melbourne, supported by Screen Australia and Film Victoria.

Often the scariest things and the darkest spirits live within our own house, closer than we think. Japanese Australian female director Natalie Erika James co-wrote the script of her debut feature “Relic” with Christian White, embracing the horror genre to talk about mortality and slipping away love. “Relic” is a new addition to what has been defined a Female Horror Renaissance and was premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in January 2020.
“Relic” is screening at the BFI London Film Festival
Elderly Edna (Robyn Nevin) lives on her own in an isolated and decaying family house in the countryside outside Melbourne. The matriarch of a family now reduced to only her daughter Kay (Emily Mortimer) and granddaughter Sam (Bella Heathcote), One day Edna is reported missing by a worried neighbour who has not seen her for a while. Kay and Sam immediately drive up to the house, only to find it eerily empty.

Co-written and directed by debut filmmaker Natalie Erika James, Relic is a creepy and disturbing horror that taps into some all-too familiar fears. It’s also superbly acted and features production design work that will have you scrubbing your house clean for days afterwards.
Set in a remote woodland, Relic centres on Kay (Emily Mortimer), who drives up from Melbourne with her college-age daughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) in tow when the police call to tell her that her elderly mother Edna (Robyn Nevin) hasn’t been seen for a few days. Other than some nasty-looking mould, nothing seems particularly unusual in the house, but Edna is nowhere to be found.

One of this writer’s favorite films out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Relic is now available on VOD and is currently playing at select drive-in theaters around the U.S., courtesy of IFC Midnight. Last week, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with co-writer/director Natalie Erika James as well as the film’s trio of terrifyingly terrific actresses—Emily Mortimer, Bella Heathcote, and Robyn Nevin—for a roundtable discussion on their experiences collaborating together for Relic.
During the interview, they chatted about everything from their initial thoughts about the project, James’ wonderfully emotional script (which she co-wrote with Christian White), tackling their respective roles and the thematic elements of Relic, and more.
I would love to hear from the actresses, in terms of coming into this project. What was sort of the initial appeal of Relic that hooked you? And also, I was wondering if...

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains Major spoilers for the end of “Relic.”]
While haunted house films have historically been the realm of male directors, the home is traditionally women’s territory. The haunted house movie has always been about family trauma, dilemma, and emotional stress, usually from from the perspective of a woman lead or matriarch. It only feels right to have such themes in the hands of a woman director, and “Relic” director Natalie Erika James has the genre chops to back it up. Recent auteur horror has succeeded by employing the form to explore mental illness (“The Babadook”), inherited trauma (“Hereditary”), and domestic violence (“The Invisible Man”). In “Relic,” James applies a grotesquely intimate lens on the horrors of Alzheimer’s and dementia.
For the Japanese-Australian filmmaker, the subject of her first feature was intensely personal.
“My grandmother had Alzheimer’s, and a lot of the film came from observation in her relationship with my mother changing over time,” James said in a phone interview.

While the new horror film Relic, starring Emily Mortimer and Bella Heathcote, is ostensibly about a haunted house, there is much more going on within the film’s ninety-minute running time that make the film from Natalie Erika James easily one of the better offerings in the genre in recent memory.
When elderly widow Edna (Robyn Nevin) inexplicably vanishes, her daughter Kay (Emily Mortimer) and granddaughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) head out to Edna’s crumbling country home. There, they find signs of her growing dementia littered throughout the house. Edna returns just as mysteriously as she disappeared and Kay’s concern that her mother seems unwilling – or unable – to say where she’s been clashes with Sam’s unabashed enthusiastic response at simply having her grandmother back. Still, as Edna’s behavior turns increasingly volatile, both Kay and Sam begin to sense that there may be something more insidious at...

When it comes to matters of monstrous kin, modern horror movies tend to turn on the “bad seed” angle, viewing demonic or killer children through the eyes of their feckless parents. But rarely do we see the opposite — an elder parent’s devolution into madness through the eyes of their adult brood. Enter “Relic,” the feature debut from Japanese-Australian filmmaker Natalie Erika James co-written by Christian White, which shows an 85-year-old matriarch’s descent into otherworldly insanity from the points of view of her daughter, Kay (Emily Mortimer), and granddaughter, Sam (Bella Heathcote).
It’s safe to say that James’ film now owns the corner on the market of horror movies about women watching their mothers come hideously undone. , landing on a final image that ranks among the most harrowing of contemporary horror.

Losing a loved one is tough enough, but losing them to Alzheimer’s disease is a brutal, harrowing, and truly heartbreaking experience. Family and friends watch as the person they knew slowly fades away, their memories, physical abilities, and even sense of self vanishing like smoke drifting upward from a waning fire. By the time death comes to claim the shell of the person you once knew, its arrival is almost a blessing.
The horror film at its best allows us to experience our deepest real-life fears in metaphorical terms, which is what the excellent Relic does with specificity, empathy, and atmosphere to spare. Emily Mortimer plays Kay, a workaholic single mom who gets a call from the police that her elderly mother Edna is missing from her home in the Australian countryside. It’s the kind of disease that afflicts one family member and digs its tentacles into those who try to manage it. Elevated horror is all the rage these days. The genre goes through phases, to put it mildly. There’s always a new flavor for what audiences want to be scared by, whether it was slasher films, torture porn, J horror, or whatnot. Currently, the renaissance is in classy independent fright flicks. Some are absolutely tremendous and downright award worth. Others, while solid indie offerings, don’t quite live up to the hype. The latest effort on the scene, riding high on phenomenal reviews back in January at the Sundance Film Festival, is Relic. Does this one live up to the hype? Well, not quite, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t still very effective. Heading to On Demand services this week, it’s horror that undoubtedly also has something to say. The movie is a horror effort, of course, though less overtly concerned with scares than you might initially expect.

‘Relic’.
Stan has swooped on Natalie Erika James’ feature debut Relic, with the film to premiere exclusively on the platform July 10.
The streaming service flagged today that the horror film forms part of series of brand new originals and theatrical releases it will announce over the coming weeks.
Relic marks the third local film to be strapped a Stan Original following Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang and Mairi Cameron’s The Second.
Relic, which bowed at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to strong reviews, tells the story of Edna (Robyn Nevin), an elderly and widowed matriarch who goes missing. Her daughter Kay (Emily Mortimer) and granddaughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) must travel to their remote family home in the Melbourne countryside to find her, and soon after her return, they start to discover a sinister presence haunting the house and taking control of Edna.

Body horror, a haunted house story, and a multigenerational, dysfunctional family drama all combine in Natalie Erika James’ new scary movie “Relic.” Starring Emily Mortimer, Bella Heathcote, and Robyn Nevin, “Relic” debuted at the Sundance Film Festival back in January, and will soon open from IFC Midnight in theaters and on demand beginning July 10. Watch the official trailer below.
“Relic” is the feature debut of Australian-Japanese writer, director, and producer James, who brings to this gothic tale a background in music videos and short films tinged with a dark fairytale edge. In the film, Mortimer plays a woman whose elderly mother Edna mysteriously vanishes, so she takes her daughter, played by Heathcote, to their dilapidated country home, where they discover clues of the matriarch’s increasing dementia. Soon, Edna (Nevin) suddenly returns, but as a much more volatile and insidious woman than she was before, and she’s not keen on revealing her whereabouts,...

Natalie Erika James, Ben Young and Zak Hilditch.
Australian directors working on productions in the Us get far more time, money and resources than they were accustomed to at home.
But there’s a downside: Loss of creative freedom.
“I liken working in the American studio system to working on a two-hour television commercial where you have a lot of different voices telling you that you are not allowed to do things the way you want to,” says Ben Young, who directed Extinction for Netflix and was co-directing Clickbait for the streamer when production was shut down.
“In making an American film you have way less freedom but way more support. The level of support and resources you get in the Us is amazing but I miss the control I had in Australia.
