Daniela Leyva at La Mitad del Continente (“The Howls”), Andrea Toca at Mexico’s Un Beso Cine (“Human Animals”) and Diana Bustamante at Burning Sas (“Buy Me a Gun”) have teamed to co-produce the vampire drama “The Day is Long and Dark,” the eighth feature from one of Mexico’s most important directors, Julio Hernández Cordón.
“Working with Julio has always been an enthralling experience. With this film there is also a mixture of things that interests me on a narrative level. Julio’s cinema is always a welcomed surprise,” producer and artistic director of the Cartagena International Film Festival Diana Bustamante told Variety.

“Fauna” is a curious proposition. On the surface, the ninth feature from Mexican-Canadian independent filmmaker Nicolás Pereda consists of a series of dialogue-driven scenes taking place in a remote Mexican village where an estranged brother and sister are visiting their parents. Yet such a description can’t quite capture the slippery nature of Pereda’s script, which slowly reveals itself as a clever study in performance and identity that mines its cringe comedy to poke fun at contemporary narconovelas and their grip on that country’s cultural imagination.
Highly intellectual in theory (the film debuted in the 2020 virtual Toronto Film Festival’s experimental Wavelengths section), “Fauna” is nevertheless a breezy, utterly beguiling affair, even as it switches gears midway through. At that point, Pereda gamely stages a new, nested narrative, one that reinvents the principal cast as playful film noir archetypes, further muddling the line between fact and fiction in the movie’s world.

Given the complicated situation with film festivals this year, there were obviously a lot of films from 2020 that might have potentially fallen through the cracks. They might have premiered at Rotterdam or Berlin, only to vanish without a trace. Or they could have simply remained on their maker’s hard drive, waiting for next year’s round of submissions, when they’d be competing with a new spate of other films. In light of this, the New York Film Festival is providing a public service with its rather swollen Currents lineup. Without inclusion in this year’s NYFF, many of these films would not receive another high profile screening, and this has consequences for future programming slots, distribution, as well as simply getting seen by viewers like you. Going forward, it’s unlikely that the Currents section will be so sprawling. After all, selectivity is NYFF’s brand.Having said that,...

Early in Mexican-Canadian filmmaker Nicolás Pereda’s succinctly effective farce Fauna, Paco (Francisco Barreiro), a thespian with a non-speaking part in the popular show Narcos, is asked to conjure up a performance in the middle of an empty pool hall. His girlfriend’s father wants to see him act on command. Adding to the film’s meta undertones that later turn more noticeable is the fact that Barreirois is in fact part of the Netflix series.
Begrudgingly, Paco concedes transforming into a hyper-masculine and overly confident drug-dealer to deliver a short monologue. Unimpressed, the older man demands to see it again. It’s an uncomfortably humorous scene that sets the stage for a nesting doll of performances inquiring about Mexican pop culture’s infatuation with vicious criminals.
Even if none of the characters in Fauna can remember Diego Luna’s name, Narcos remains the pinnacle of this commoditization of violence.

Estranged siblings gathering weary forces to check in on their distant parents rarely makes for a good time in real life, but onscreen in Nicolás Pereda’s “Fauna,” it’s a rife setup for awkward moments and cringe comedy refracted through an oddball lens. Dry as a bone and shot with clinical detachment, the latest entry in the evolving Pereda cinematic universe is both a dysfunctional family dramedy and a droll sendup of celebrity obsession, using the global fever surrounding Netflix’s “Narcos” as an entry point into the life of actors, creators, and those who watch them from afar.
Luisa (Luisa Pardo) and Paco (Francisco Barreiro) are on a road trip. She is an aspiring actor, he a more successful one, and they’re going to visit her parents in a rural village in Mexico. She hasn’t seen them in awhile, and her brother Gabino (Lázaro Gabino Rodríguez) will be joining them.

Variety reported this weekend that one of our favorite Mexican actors, Francisco Barreiro has been cast to lead Julio Hernández Cordón's upcoming film, The Day is Long and Dark (My Friends are Vampires). The project was pitched last week in Buenos Aires at Ventana Sur in the Proyecta sidebar, looking for co-production and distribution in Argentina and Spain, as well as potential sales agents. In “The Day is Long and Dark,” Ariel is a Mexican gore film director and an actual vampire. He tours Europe and Latin America’s most important festivals with his latest film, “My Friends are Vampires,” spending sleepless nights in random hotel rooms across Europe and Latin America, seeking out dealers who...

Julio Hernández Cordón, one of Mexico’s most-awarded independent filmmakers over the last decade, has found the leading man for his next feature “The Day is Long and Dark (My Friends are Vampires),” in Fantastic Fest best actor winner Francisco Barreiro, star of Adrián García Bogliano’s “Here Comes the Devil.”.
Barreiro’s casting was shared with Variety from Buenos Aires’ Ventana Sur Market where the project was pitched for the first time publicly at the event’s Proyecta sidebar for Latin American projects.
Since his debut feature “Gasolina” swept San Sebastian’s in progress awards in 2007 before returning the following year and winning the Latino Horizons Award, Hernández Cordón has been one of Latin America’s most prolific filmmakers, releasing a new feature almost every year.

Evil Games, when squinted at from afar, might resemble one of the Coen Brothers’ crime-driven dark comedies. An initially intriguing thriller setup leads to something quite honestly disturbing in Adrián García Bogliano's Scherzo Diabolico, now available to watch via various Video On Demand platforms (and on DVD, too!). Opening with helicopter-style overhead shots, following a car as it winds its way through a wooded region on a two-lane highway, rather like Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, the movie then cuts to Aram (Francisco Barreiro). He's driving alone, though when he eventually returns home we learn that, like Jack Torrance, he's struggling to get along with his wife (Milena Pezzi). At least their only child, a son, doesn't have any supernatural inclinations. Aram is a fiercely dedicated worker who is more than willing to work many overtime hours. But then his boss Granovsky (Jorge...

Over the last few years, Adrián García Bogliano has quickly become one of my favorite independent filmmakers due to his work on projects like Cold Sweat, Penumbra, Here Comes the Devil, Late Phases (easily the best werewolf movie we’ve had since Dog Soldiers), as well as his latest film, Scherzo Diabolico, a pitch-black revenge/comedy hybrid that demonstrates ambition always comes with a hefty price tag, especially when kidnapping is involved.
Scherzo Diabolico was released this week by Dark Sky Films on DVD and VOD platforms everywhere, and in honor of its release, Daily Dead had the chance to catch up with Bogliano, as well as Francisco Barreiro, who stars in the film and previously collaborated with the director on Here Comes the Devil. After directing Late Phases, his English-language debut film, Adrián García Bogliano returned to Mexico to work again with Here Comes the Devil’s Francisco Barreiro. The result was Scherzo Diabolico, in which Barreiro portraits a middle aged man who -- while waiting for better circumstances at his work and also to put together his marriage -- will become the worst nightmare for a young girl (Daniela Soto), turning himself into an iconic masked psychopath. Scherzo Diabolico is out today on VOD & DVD, so here’s part of a conversation I had with Bogliano back in early 2015 about his latest film. What was the genesis of this return to Latin-American cinema after your English-language debut? Adrián García Bogliano: While doing Late Phases, I used to read line...

Aram’s life has gradually grown into a painful existence, but things only get worse when his planned kidnapping goes wrong and all hell breaks loose, as teased in the first trailer for Scherzo Diabolico, the new film from Adrián García Bogliano that comes out on VOD, Digital HD, and DVD on May 3rd via Dark Sky Films.

Life’s inevitable spiral towards death – it’s something we’re all tragically caught in. We have an unknown amount of time on this planet, and how we use said time is what defines us. That, in essence, is the story of Camino, Josh C. Waller’s latest collaboration with stunt-actress and perennial badass, Zoë Bell. It’s the thought that an honorable death is a life not wasted, no matter how the subject of that mentality might feel. Of course, that’s not exactly how we do things here in America, and as you can infer from the above picture, Waller takes us to a war-torn Colombian jungle in order to assess the worth of a human life – something Bell does herself when thrust into a frantic fight for survival.

Going UNDERGROUNDEverybody and their dog, it seems, feels this off imperative to try to identify common themes in the handful of festival films they (we) (I) see in a given year. It's the Ghost of Hegel, I suppose, demanding that we make sense of our times by referring to some Zeitgeist. (Zeitgeist? Isn't this just as likely to Strand the FilmsWeLike in some oh-so-precious Music Box, to be unearthed years later by members of some as-yet-unassembled Cinema Guild? But I digress.) There may or may not be tendencies running through this year's feature selections, and if there are, that could have as much to do with the people who selected them than with any global mood. But there does seem to be a generalized turning-inward, with filmmakers making works about themselves and their immediate lives, the cinematic process, and the very complexities of communicating with other human beings. There are...

Lock Your Souls Up: Bogliano’s Latest a Decent But Frayed Exercise
Adrian Garcia Bogliano’s tenth feature film, Here Comes the Devil finally shows the Argentinean horrormeister beginning to hone his craft to create something that at last contains some cinematic virtue. Perhaps it helps that he has left his native country for Tijuana, Mexico to tell this devilish tale of the supernatural. Although it appears to have been shackled together and definitely would have been better served with some better editing, acting, and reshoots, there’s a promise here of something more defined, and, all squabbles aside, the film is entirely watchable.
Shuddering us into an exploitative lesbian sex scene, all loud and brassy before quickly making way for some bloody violence, the gears are quickly switched to a more languid pace as we meet a family on a trip to Tijuana. Sol (Laura Caro) and Felix (Francisco Barreiro...
