A special five day marathon of guitar shredding tunes has been announced today, as Guitar Hero Live‘s Shred-a-Thon event goes live on Ghtv. The brand new event is bringing some of the toughest songs in Guitar Hero history back to the stage for players to attempt to remaster over the next few days.
The Shred-a-Thon playlist is set to include the following tracks on repeat:
DragonForce – Through the Fire and Flames
Alter Bridge – Cry of Achilles
Megadeth – Hangar 18
Lamb of God – Ghost Walking
Trivium – Strife
Once the event is over, Through the Fire and Flames will be joining the game’s regular track-list so the return of the iconic tune will be a far more longstanding one than previously expected. Every song in the Shred-a-Thon is also Rival Challenge-enabled, which means players have the option of competing against matchmade gamers in a head-to-head battle during each song.

The industry might be in a rocky state right now when it comes to adequately showcasing the best talent and getting it in front of the most receptive audiences, but for hard rock and metal acts, bands like Alter Bridge forever guarantee the best rewards are for those who seek them out instead.
Over the years they’ve soared like a phoenix from the embers of Creed, emerging as a band with a devout purpose; to combine the melodies and song-structures that got the post-grunge legends to the top of the charts and stadium headline bills the world over, with a hard-hitting workmanlike attitude that ensures they’d earn every seat in every chair.
So what does it mean to be an Alter Bridge fan in 2015? Do you know your Couer D’Alene’s from your Cauterize’s? Your freeform jazz interludes from your flamenco instrumentation sections?
Maybe so,...

We always knew it was going to be good – but for Mark Tremonti (lead shredder of Alter Bridge and ex-Creed co-founder) to top his phenomenal first solo album, that was would have to be something mighty special indeed.
Luckily, when you’ve got one of the best melodic minds in modern metal (try saying that ten times fast) you don’t do things by half, and from the positively furious opening riff of Radical Change, through the soaring vocals of the title track and the unabashedly epic Fall Again or Providence, Cauterize is one Hell of an album.
Genre-wise it ticks boxes left, right and centre – seriously, when things like the mid-point breakdown of Tie the Noose kick in, no volume setting on earth can do it justice – easily slotting into everything from heavy metal to hard rock, with plenty experimental song structures and everything in between...

Activision may be gearing up for a grand reveal at E3 next month, but that doesn’t mean the studio can’t grant backstage passes to budding Guitar Hero Live fans in order to tease some details ahead of time.
Part and parcel of the series’ lucrative success a generation ago was the songs featured on the set list, and developer FreeStyleGames – creative minds behind 2009’s spinoff DJ Hero – is ensuring that Live‘s soundtrack is just as memorable, with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Fall Out Boy and Rage Against The Machine toplining the game’s early set list.
That said, the music scene isn’t what it was a decade ago when the franchise first debuted, and Guitar Hero Live will reflect the new tones and tastes of 2015, all the while retaining some old school classics for good measure.

You know when you come across a band who just have wall-to-wall phenomenal material, every fan’s going to have their own favourite choruses, vocal moments, guitar solos and more – but it’s always fun to delve in and pick some favourites; a definitive top 10 you could recommend to everyone.
For Alter Bridge it’s been one hell of a ride getting to the top, with heavy metal-loving lead guitarist Mark Tremonti slowly injecting more crushing rhythms into the band’s work as vocalist Myles Kennedy’s becomes more accustomed to playing in front of huge stadium-sized audiences fronting Slash’s newest outfit, birthing a combination whose confidence shows more and more in everything they do.
Backed by one of the tightest rhythm sections in the business in drummer Scott ‘Flip’ Philips and Brian Marshall on bass, 2013’s Fortress is their most accomplished and experimental work so far...

It’s not hard to recommend a slew of phenomenal tracks when the band you’re delving into hasn’t had too many rise to the surface of mainstream recognition, but still, chances are anyone reading this has at least head of Alter Bridge. Either as “That band who used to be Creed” (although that’s starting to fade after over a decade of association), “Slash’s singer’s band” or “Those guys that did Edge’s wrestling theme song”, Ab are a band with talents elastic enough to stretch across a great many different places, becoming all three of these things – but also much, much more.
From the teeth-rattling riffs of lead guitarist Mark Tremonti – a man who sweats enough talent-juice to release sequential grade-a material for over a decade now – to Myles Kennedy, their frontman who tickles the moon with his high notes without even breaking a sweat,...

Alter Bridge are a band that have been gradually getting heavier and heavier over the past decade. Although first album One Day Remains had some of the remnants of more Creed-like songwriting (three quarters of the band were former members) there’s always been glimpses of where they were heading.
With lead guitarist Mark Tremonti being a man who spends many hours a day fully immersed in both guitar theory and practice – and who schooled himself in the likes of Slayer and Celtic Frost growing up – fans of hard rock and metal have seen a far more practiced-yet-furious side emerge to The Tremonster’s playing over the years.
Last year’s Fortress saw the most complex arrangements the band have composed thus far too, with a far heavier bent throughout that helped build on the motions started through each album – in particular the fantastically dark Ab III.

If there’s one band anyone with a penchant for guitar-based music needs to keep their eye on it’s Alter Bridge. With a weekend-dominating set at Download (underneath Aerosmith no less) now in the rear-view mirror, they’ve been touring new album Fortress relentlessly – or as relentlessly as you can when your frontman also helps front Slash & The Conspirators.
Such is the life that singer Myles Kennedy, guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Philips lead in 2014, although it seems they couldn’t be happier. With the former currently only seeing his hometown for a few weeks a year, Tremonti recording a followup to his bone-powderingly heavy solo album, Marshall keeping busy teaching bass on tour and Flip (hopefully) working on a second Projected album, the band rarely seem to see any downtime.

As time rolls on and the mainstream rock press look to championing a new band as the forthcoming headliner for the upcoming generations, Alter Bridge have already started receiving much positive coverage – and for very good reason.
Fronted by one Myles Kennedy – a man who after schooling himself as a jazz teacher would go on rehearse with Led Zeppelin’s reunion tour and front Slash’s current outfit – they’ve gone from strength to strength with every album, so far managing to maintain rocket-powered uphill momentum with each release. That’s not to mention the band themselves are built from the ashes of Creed, as whilst Scott Stapp has gone on to have a fairly middling solo career, guitarist Mark Tremonti – who himself is an absolute powerhouse of riffs, solos and musicianship – drummer Scott ‘Flip’ Phillips and bassist Brian Marshall joined up with Kennedy...

If the apocalypse ever actually does happen there’ll be a few things that are left intact; one being the long hair, hat n’ glasses combo of Saul ‘Slash’ Hudson, standing knees bent with a Les Paul resting low in his hands as he plays some sonically-awesome population-reviving solo.
The man is immortal – or at least it definitely feels that way. Having gone from changing the face of rock n’ roll along with Axl Rose and the other members of Guns n’ Roses the band slowly fell apart, but it didn’t even remotely stop there. Following GnR Slash released a couple of albums with different lineups under the title of ‘Slash’s Snakepit’; themselves packed to the brim with tight riffage and some brilliantly experimental solos.

It goes without saying that in 2014 if you consider yourself anything close to a rock fan you’ve at least heard of one Myles Richard Kennedy, the man who effortlessly traverses every known high and low on the vocal spectrum.
With one of the greatest voices in all of rock n’ roll, be it past or present (or most likely the future too), he’s done everything from starring in the brilliantly funny Rock Star film to auditioning for Led Zeppelin and going on tour with Slash. And that’s without mentioning how in between all this he’s also fronted his own band Alter Bridge across stadiums worldwide.
Although whenever any adoration goes his way he’s more than humble, every Alter Bridge fan will scream from the rafters about just how indescribably amazing Mr. Kennedy’s exquisite set of pipes really are. There are some of us...

It’s no secret that any regular reader of WhatCulture.com’s music section has come across an Alter Bridge article or two, as thanks in no small part to the phenomenally sky-high vocal talents of one Myles Kennedy and the thundering powerhouse of a guitarist that is Mark Tremonti – along with an incredibly tight rhythm section in Brian Marshall and Scott Phillips – the band have gone from strength to strength over the last few years.
Speaking of Tremonti though, the man is absolute machine on and off stage, creating a style that’s all his own by cherry-picking hugely enjoyable techniques from the likes of Kirk Hammett, Dimebag Darrell, Paul Gilbert and more, along with his own take on the instrument to really become one of the best guitarists currently working today.
From searingly fast shredding leads to slower bluesy note-progressions and screaming high notes that whip Alter Bridge fans into a frenzy,...

Whether you’ve been with the band since the beginning or are just getting into them thanks to a myriad of phenomenal albums over the past few years, Alter have been on an incredible upward curve as they grab new fans left, right and centre, all culminating thus far in a guest slot under Aerosmith at this year’s Download Festival.
The uninitiated amongst you may know them as “That band who did Edge’s theme song” from wrestling years ago, or from any number of the more recent tracks that include the brutally-heavy Isolation from 2010′s Ab III, the bouncy-as-all-hell Addicted to Pain from last year’s Fortress, or current behemoth of a track Cry of Achilles that’s re-injecting complex arrangements back into popular hard rock.

Whether you’re running a marathon, building muscle or just trying to lose weight, working out is a grim activity. Schlepping yourself to the gym to see people much healthier than you making better use of the machines than you’ll ever achieve can be downright depressing. Most of us poor fools who dare to get up from the sofa and venture into the world of the fit and healthy make the experience more bearable by deafening ourselves with pre-made gym playlists; music can help deal with the monotony and drown out the accusing laughter at your inability to master level 4 on the stepper machine.
The thing is, most gyms and most exercise playlists you can readily come across play dance music almost exclusively. Now if you’re into dance music, that’s all well and good, jog on. But what if you’re of more of the rock persuasion?...

Alter Bridge are fast becoming a household name due in no small part to the angelic tones of lead vocalist Myles Kennedy’s stint as Slash’s frontman.
Take three of the four guys from one of the most (unnecessarily) hated bands in history; Creed, replace that bands’ Achilles heel with Mr Kennedy, coupled with the want to break away from all that’s gone before, and you have Alter Bridge.
Whilst their first album still appeared to be leaning on some subtle Creedian tropes with the likes of Broken Wings and Down To My Last, sophomore effort Blackbird was a knock on the door of the all-time greats, instantly propelling the band into their own category of melodic hard rock.
Kennedy was now fully on-board, contributing phenomenal melodies and a twin-guitar attack that would come to define them. Blackbird offered his genuinely jaw-dropping range powered by a technical beast...

We doubt Dread Central readers will be scandalized by the new video for "Straightjacket Supermodel" released by Eve to Adam, but with a leather-clad Juliya Chernetsky and Playboy Playmate Kristin Nicole appearing in it, we figured you'd at least want to check it out.
We've been talking about the song, which was inspired by the TV show "Dexter," for quite some time, and now finally NYC rockers Eve to Adam have released a video for it. The video shows the band performing at a twisted photo shoot featuring leather-clad dominatrix Juliya Chernetsky (of Fuse fame) and Playboy Playmate vixen Kristin Nicole. Electric chairs, ball gags, and an axe also make appearances, all adding up to a truly scandalous experience.

Los Angeles, California (x17online) - Guns N' Roses reunited during their Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction concert on Sunday without their longstanding lead singer Axl Rose. The three original members, Slash, Duff McKagan and Steven Adler, hit the stage this weekend to perform some of their greatest hits during the festivities, including classics like Sweet Child O' Mine and Paradise City. With Axl's absence, the group recruited Miles Kennedy, lead singer from Creed spin-off band Alter Bridge, to take over the microphone during their set. Axl Rose refused to attend the event after citing a "lack of respect" in a letter addressed to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last week.

No Axl? No problem. The other original members of Guns N' Roses -- Slash, Duff and Steven Adler -- didn't let Axl Rose's boycott of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame keep them from performing some of Gnr's greatest hits this weekend ... they just used a different singer. The band hit the stage with Myles Kennedy on lead vocals ... busting out hits like "Sweet Child O' Mine" and "Paradise City."Fyi -- Myles...

Even without Axl Rose, the guns still blazed. Despite their lead singer sitting out the festivities due to hurt feelings at a perceived lack of respect, three original members of Guns N' Roses -- Slash, Duff McKagan and Steven Adler -- took to the stage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction concert on Sunday to perform some of their top 80s-era hits. And without Axl's sky-reaching vocals available, they were joined by Myles Kennedy, the lead vocalist for Slash's solo project and the Creed-spinoff band Alter Bridge -- to man the microphone. Steven Adler reps VH1 Classic show onstage during Gn'r induction.

Axl wasn't there, but Saturday night's (April 15) Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony did feature three original members of Guns N' Roses — Slash, Duff McKagan and Steven Adler — who jammed with former Gunners Gilby Clarke and Matt Sorum (plus Alter Bridge frontman Myles Kennedy stepping in to fill Rose's shoes) on a medley of the band's biggest hits.
Of course, there was also a cameo that only eagle-eyed fans of VH1 Classic's "That Metal Show" probably caught: The show's logo, worn squarely on Adler's chest.
Adler has appeared on "That Metal Show" before and is an avowed fan of the program — he even canceled a performance by his band Adler's Appetite in 2010 to appear as a guest.

If it's the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, then drama is as much a prerequisite as loud guitars, receding hairlines and a night-ending all-star jam on a golden oldie.
Saturday night's 27th edition was no exception according to reports, with as much intrigue as a telenovela, as well as some genuinely peaceful Southern California bro-downage, irreverent induction speeches and fresh spots in the Hall for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, The Faces, Freddie King, Laura Nyro and Guns N' Roses.

Let’s be honest, if you’re reading this review, you know what this album sounds like. It’s Nickelback. Canada’s biggest export have been churning out stadium rock hit after hit for the past ten years, and as the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Before I properly start this review, I should say that I don’t hate Nickelback. I genuinely enjoyed 2003’s The Long Road, and All The Right Reasons and Dark Horse both had decent tracks on them. Here And Now, the band’s seventh album is no different, the music isn’t necessarily bad, but it isn’t exactly good either. The greatest compliment I could probably give it is that it’s very Nickelback.
Album opener This Is War is a heavy number, which you could easily imagine being the backing music to a WWE montage video,...

In the past few years, these four cats from Canada – who turn out loud & proud melodic arena-rock with a gritty, bluesy edge and a cocky sense of humor – have risen up from a modest but loyal following to score platinum sales and crossover fame with their album Scars & Souvenirs, and topped the radio charts in 2008 with their single "Bad Girlfriend." Back this summer with their latest full-length, they've also hit the road this month for the 2010 "Carnival of Madness" North American tour along with Black Stone Cherry, Adleita's Way, Alter Bridge and Emphatic. When it comes to Kentucky, it's hard not to associate it with anything other than the world-famous Run for the Roses, the Kentucky Derby (and sure, for some, a certain fast food chain.)
And with the 137th Kentucky Derby set to take place this weekend, we here at MTV wanted to pay homage to some other winners from the state, namely the eclectic variety of musicians and bands that hail from there. In addition to the many bluegrass and country artists that call the great state their old Kentucky home, there's also been boy bands (Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson of the Backstreet Boys hail from the state), chart-topping rockers and hip-hoppers. Here are some of our favorites ... a Musical Mint Julep to enjoy before the big race.
Loretta Lynn
Perhaps the name most synonymous with Kentucky musicians, Butcher Hollow native Loretta Lynn is a country music pioneer.

Comedian Martin Short still relies on "Jersey Shore" to make fun of pop culture. Appearing as guest on Monday, April 25 episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", Short debuted a "red band trailer" of his new movie called "Jersey Short".
In the spoof movie, Short plays every character on the MTV reality show, wearing abs suit to portray The Situation and a poof to resemble Snooki. The so-called movie's plot centers on Snooki giving birth to a pickle while in the hot tub and The Situation accidentally eating her child.
Short was on "Kimmel" to promote his new, and real, movie "Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil". Jimmy Kimmel also welcomed guest actress Kat Dennings and musical guest Alter Bridge.
Short is lined up for the 2011 TBS Just For Laughs Festival which takes place June 14-19 at various locations. Joined by Steve Martin, he would appear at the Chicago Theater on June 19 in...

Tonight features no new programming dedicated to the royal nuptials specifically and I, for one, am a little bit stunned. I hadn't realized how much I counted on having a wedding show or two to tee off on for giggles until there weren't any and now there's this strange, Royal Wedding shaped hole in my evening helping of snark. I'm sure this awful oversight will be corrected in the coming days so I can be sure to make up for today's loss with lots of sarcastic quips and references to fascinators and whatnot. There's not even a proper helping of misery tonight. Honestly, I feel like I've failed all of you tonight on Pajiba After Dark. Apologies. Here's your (rather dull) Monday night TV:

At the time, it seemed a perfectly reasonable thing to ask. After all, for all intents and purposes, rock music was dead in 2010: Nickelback's Dark Horse was the year's best-selling rock album (even though it was released in November 2008), lumbering bands like Alter Bridge, Disturbed and Shinedown continued to dominate radio, and even the chart-topping successes of indie acts like Vampire Weekend and Arcade Fire were dismissed as little more than flukes: They only reached #1, the argument went, because...

A few weeks ago, we heard about the lineup for the 2011 version of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which will feature the likes of Kings of Leon, Kanye West, Arcade Fire and the Strokes. Around the same time, a fake Coachella poster advertising a festival called "Brochella" got passed around the Internet, which featured the likes of Nickelback, Creed and a number of others. But early this morning, the lineup for Rock on the Range 2011 was unveiled, and it looks alarmingly like the batch of bands pulled together for "Brochella." This year's festival (which will be held on May 21 and 22 in Columbus, Ohio) features headliners A Perfect Circle, Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, Korn, Stone Sour and Staind. Take a little bit of Creed and the front man of Slash’s solo project to form the American rock band, Alter Bridge. This powerhouse group would probably have to try hard to produce a poor track. Their third studio album, Ab III, dropped on November 9th via Roadrunner Records with “Isolation” as its single. What a difference a year makes. This time last year, viral sensation Susan Boyle crushed the competition when her debut album,I Dreamed a Dream, sold more than 701,000 copies in its first week on the charts. Next week, Scottish singer Boyle will once again snag a #1 debut with her second effort, The Gift, but with a decidedly more modest first-week tally of 318,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.
That will still give her more than enough to top last week's #1, Taylor Swift's Speak Now, which falls to #2 on sales of 212,000, giving the country-pop crossover star a three-week total nearing 1.6 million. Other debuts in the top 10 include Kid Cudi's second effort, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, which will come in at...

Though their reunion hasn't been met with the sort of enthusiasm they were probably expecting, you cannot underestimate just how big Creed were at their peak. The combination of radio-friendly riffing and post-grunge brooding made songs like "My Own Prison," "With Arms Wide Open," "Higher" and "My Sacrifice" into ubiquitous rock hits. So when frontman Scott Stapp ducked out to pursue a solo career, he left behind a powerful rock trio who decided to continue on as Alter Bridge. They recruited singer Myles Kennedy and released their debut album One Day Remains on this day in 2004.
One Day Remains is one of the great underrated mainstream rock records of the past decade, full of the same sort of charging riffs as the Creed albums without Stapp's Jesus Christ pose posturing. Songs like "Find the Real" and "Metalingus" bring together charging riffs with huge choruses for an over-the-top but undeniable rock stew.

Other than taking a short break to play some riffs for Rihanna, top-hatted guitarist Slash spent the better part of last year working on his solo album, which many fans took as further proof that Velvet Revolver were no more.
The supergroup — made up of Slash, fellow Guns N' Roses alums Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner and Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland — produced a pair of well-received albums. Then Weiland went back to Stp, leaving Velvet Revolver without a frontman. Still, despite the group having been mostly quiet for the last two years, Slash says they fully intend to push forward — and they even have some songs ready to go.

Considering how long he has been around and the sort of people he has hung out with and places he has been, you would think there wouldn't be a whole lot that would throw off Slash.
But when it came time to plan a tour in support of his recently released self-titled solo album, he was a little perplexed. After all, he couldn't recruit all of the top-shelf talent who provided vocals on Slash (including Kid Rock, Ozzy Osbourne, Fergie, Chris Cornell, Adam Levine and Dave Grohl).
Luckily, he took a chance that paid off. "I auditioned a lot of singers for Velvet Revolver and a lot for this new tour," Slash told MTV News of the jaunt, which kicks off Friday night (May 21) in Walker,...

Considering what a big ego Axl Rose has, it's somewhat amazing that former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash managed to get any sort of recognition during the classic band's heyday. But that's a testament to the man born Saul Hudson's charisma and skill as a songwriter and performer. Slash has cemented himself as one of the greatest six-string players in history. Remarkably, he has managed to do it over the course of 25 years and in several different projects, including Guns, Velvet Revolver, Slash's Snakepit and as a solo artist on his recently-released self-titled album. His cultural caché bought him guest spots from luminaries like Ozzy Osbourne,...

Former Guns N' Roses' guitarist Slash is revamping hits for his planned solo tour - because he trusts singer Myles Kennedy to cover Axl Rose's original vocals. The top hat-toting rocker famously fell out with Rose and quit the band in the mid-1990s, and over a decade later, the pair has yet to patch up their friendship.
Alter Bridge's frontman Kennedy has signed up for the guitarist's upcoming solo tour in summer, and Slash is keen to resurrect the hits from his Guns N' Roses days. Slash tells the Los Angeles Times, "More than anything, it's because Myles is such a capable singer."
He continues, "He knows those songs, and he sings them great. A lot of those songs are in a register that most people can't sing, and Myles can, and he can do it from the heart. That's the real reason for unwrapping certain...
