Defender of the helpless and oppressed.
25 June 2002
Black and white, silent movie...outstanding. It is neat to watch the old jerky motion and pay more attention to the facial expressions that help tell the tale. In raw Spanish California there is a defender of the oppressed and humiliated...cigarette puffing, cocky man in black, Zorro to the rescue. Athletic sword play is the equalizer and excitement of the movie. Douglas Fairbanks as Don Diego Vega/Zorro is enjoyable to watch. His main rival is Sgt. Gonzales(Noah Berry) and the women they lust for in common is Lolita Pulido(Marguerite De La Motte). Don't be afraid to sit back and enjoy a blast from the past. It does not take long to see why the character of Zorro has inspired movie watchers for decades with so many variations of his legend.
