An entertaining movie full of action and adventure, despite the commonplace plot and fair acting
11 January 1999
First of all, the plot in Enemy of the State was NOT complex. It was not suspenseful or an on the edge of your seat thriller. However, it was entertaining. The plot revolves around the conspiracy theory again. The movie plays on the audiences' paranoias of government agencies such as the NSA. We have seen more than our share of these plots manifest themselves in television and movies lately. Will Smith gives an average performance, but he's no superstar. I thought the movie's clever use of special effects combined with the unveiling of sci-fi spy technology made the movie more bearable. But the film does bring up an interesting issue: the look at the role of government in society today. It leads us to question the powers of such an entity and its effects on everyday life. But, the social statement is probably lost somewhere in the lingere shop. By the way, I'd like the address of that shop from Jerry if possible. Overall, it was a slightly above average film.
