Down with trite, tongue-in-cheek genre films that lack the spirit of the originals
22 May 2003
Who's playing whom? And who will win at this battle of the sexes? These are the burning questions of Down With Love. My answer- who cares? Boring plot, ridiculously over-the-top sexual innuendo, and silly plot twists run rampant in this incredibly uninteresting film. The sets and costumes are very retro-hip, but that just makes you wish they'd spent a tenth of the time it took to create the `look of the film' on the script - then at least the movie might have been watchable. Even a song and dance number with Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor can't save this film. Truly, even zany, stylistic romantic comedies must either be funny or romantic. Down With Love never gets in the vicinity of either.
