Has its moments--but no horror
8 April 2005
A bunch of annoying college kids are invited to a party at a remote island by Muffy (Deborah Foreman). Everything seems to be going fine but, one by one, people start disappearing and Muffy begins acting VERY strange...

Back in 1986 me and a friend went to see this expecting a gory (it's R rated) and stupid slasher film. That's not what we got. There's no blood, no gore, no graphic killings--nothing even remotely scary (although Amy Steel seeing a body floating under a floor is kind of spooky). Heck--there's no real nudity either! The closest you get is handsome, hunky Ken Olandt in his underwear and (briefly) baring his butt. This movie stresses character development and trying to figure out what happened to everybody else. The R rating is just for swearing and explicit sexual dialogue.

As a drama and a mystery it works pretty well. The acting is good--especially by Foreman, Olandt, Steel and O'Neal--and they do have a likable cast. And there is a welcome sense of humor--but a pretty funny kind not a malicious or dark sense. The ending surprised me a little too. It's well-directed also and has a hilarious continuity error--at the beginning some people fall into the water, they're pulled out and their clothes are magically dry in the next shot!

But it's NOT a horror film and that's what it was advertised as. I was more than a little upset by that fact back when I originally saw it. In fact, I HATED this film because of that. Seeing it now it's an OK mystery--but that first impression is hard to forget and I'm still angry over it. I can only give this a 5.
