No masterpiece, but a fun sci-fi flick

OK, so after reading all the reviews here my expectations were quite low for this movie. But honestly, I have to say that I enjoyed it. Maybe it's because I went into it expecting a stinker? Hypercube is not without its flaws, but the film is still entertaining.

I love some of the questions the movie raises, and how it dealt with Parallel Time, and Alternate Universes, which has always interested me. Simon added some good tension towards the end, especially as he loses his grip on reality. Plus, I'm sure the Forever Knight fans will enjoy seeing Geraint Wyn Davies playing the "good" *cough* detective.

Visually, the movie is quite nice to look at, with some tricky match shots that roll over the entire cube, making use of some compositing and 3D modeling technology. The film is, obviously, a low budget one, and unsurprisingly some of the visual effects convey that. However, the hypercube (3d model) itself transitions seamlessly and unless you take a look at behind the scenes footage you probably can't pick out which walls were green screen.

The walls are a stark white, which makes the film have to work harder to achieve a mysterious air, but it manages to do it despite the bright setting. A scene in the middle when Mrs. Paley meets her alter ego was chilling, as well as the end where some tension is built up between the main characters as the hypercube collapses.

The script is average, but not bad for a TV movie and not so hideous as to ruin the movie. More should have been added in the way of character development; unfortunately undeveloped scripts are becoming the norm these days -- even for 'blockbuster' movies -- let's hope that changes soon. The ending is one that is likely to leave many unsatisfied, yet in a way, I almost feel it's a fitting ending for a movie like this. Could it have been more satisfying by answering more questions? Yeah. But do you really want them all answered? All and all? If you enjoy Sci-Fi films, take a peek. It's an entertaining flick, despite its faults, and one of the better Sci-Fi films I've seen in a while.
