This movie is a remake of an earlier picture starring Gary Cooper. In this version, Jimmy Cagney plays the lead and his love interests are Olivia de Havilland and Rita Hayworth. Cagney is perfect for this role and his "friend" is very ably played by Jack Carson.

The story is set in the Gay 90s and begins as Cagney is thinking back about the good old days when he and Carson were friends who were both interested in the same girl (Hayworth). Why they keep overlooking the almost equally beautiful de Havilland is beyond me--especially since she is a much nicer and less conceited lady. Anyway, this friendship is severely tested and Carson turns out to be quite the cad.

How the movie ends is delightful. The acting, pacing and direction are wonderful and this is a wonderful example of Warner Brothers at peak form.

FYI--This is a remake of the 1933 film starring Gary Cooper and Neil Hamilton. Usually I prefer the originals, but the Cagney version is a lot more polished and fun. There is also a 1948 remake of the remake, though I have not yet seen that one.
