Evil (2003)
9/10
Brutal and honest drama

"There's only one word for those like you, and that is "evil".Evil in its purest form. There's no other explanation." This is what 16-year-old Erik Ponti(Andreas Wilson) is told before being expelled from school for what must be the fifth time, because of his violent behavior. But can you blame him? He lives with his mother and a stepfather who is the Swedish equivalent of David Copperfield's Mr.Murdstone(not kidding).Anyway, the young troublemaker is sent to a boarding school, his last chance to improve his own life.Only problem:senior students can do whatever they want with younger ones, because the latter get expelled if they react. One student in particular, Otto Silverhielm(Gustaf Skarsgård), does everything he can to make Erik's life unbearable, while Erik himself prefers to wait patiently, until it's the right moment for the ultimate revenge.

Based on Jan Guillou's autobiographical novel, it's an excellent film about friendship, love, hope, freedom, but also, as the title suggests, evil, which is necessary sometimes to obtain all the other things.

Brilliantly directed, written and acted(Wilson and Skarsgård are disturbingly perfect), it's worth a look if you like Scandinavian movies.
