This is a well-crafted film, slow-moving but determined in its quest to prove that a love is still alive. There are some brilliant ways in which we get an insight into the workings of Mathilde's mind, through voice-overs and an acknowledgement of her logic. Intuition rules and rules well! The film gives a clear picture of the horrors of WWI, and though there is no gratuitous violence, there is a filmic sense of the horror that the war "distils".
Shot primarily in browns and yellows, this has a feeling of a historical, docu-drama. It's a carefully conceived film, with some excellent supporting characters.
Be like Mathilde; don't give up on this film. It's worth the indulgence.
