Review of Evil

Evil (2003)

Fine work

This is the first Swedish movie I have watched and those who reject movies with subtitles outright are missing a treat. First, the language sounds pretty good, much easier than the writing suggests, and it shares many words with English. I shall be looking for more Swedish movies - and shall find them, thanks to Netflix I have been able to enjoy movies from all 5 continents.

To people of a certain age, the "Lord of the Flies" boarding school in this movie has some striking similarities to similar boy's boarding schools around the world, although the violence and oppression in that place was extreme and over the top with no adult supervision. We also had a student who was as dangerous and as natural a street fighter, perhaps even more so. It is also based on a true story and feels very authentic.

The movie gripped me from start to finish without letting go. This movie would constitute great therapy for those who underwent hazing and could not fight back. It is also a great example of righteous defiance against stupidity and cruelty.
