Review of Fanaa

Fanaa (2006)
2/10
Self directed by Aamir and Kajol
7 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Save for Aamir and Kajol, the movie is just another Yash Raj kind of Love story with a contemporary and Geo-political background of Kashmir. The mixture of Love and Terrorism proved a little too much to handle for Kunal Kohli. He desperately needs a few direction lessons from Mani Ratnam and Ram Gopal Varma. Or may be they just need to stick to DDLJ or Mohabbatein or Hum Tum kind of stories. Serious drama is certainly not their cuppa tea. They sure are good at sentimental and melodramatic flicks.

Here's my issue, the story has the potential for a better movie than this, but apart from the performances, the direction is pathetic, with a stupid looking Indian Officials lead by Sharath Saxena and Tabu seriously trying a Jodie Foster. There are way too many loose ends, Aamir infiltrating the Indian Army, Indian Officials discussing the the Kashmir root cause and deciding to intimate the Pakistani counterparts about their plan. The movie is a desperate attempt at political correctness, when they say that Pakistan is equally troubled by Kashmiri Terrorists. I mean is the director kidding me.

I can't believe appeasement has infiltrated the movie world with respect to Pakistan too. Apart from the performances of Aamir and Kajol, there is nothing much to write home about this movie. I just think it is a over-hyped movie, which deserves a DVD view at the best.
