The bad science overcame any redeeming values for me
7 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
While it is fair to say that we did not know much about mars when this film was made, we surely knew something about its lack of atmosphere, its temperature ranges, the unlikelihood of volcanic activity, etc. I am sure to be labeled a grouch for saying this was one of the worst movies I have ever watched but then, this is my first viewing, in 2007, when we know a great deal about Mars. The theme of the film is survival but almost all of the methods are just not realistic including batteries lasting for months, ability to put 60 hours worth of oxygen in a bottle by steaming rocks (approximately) and so on. The spacecraft reminded me of the 1950s Spaaaaace Patrol! with Commander Buzz Cory or some of the nearly contemporary Star Trek television programs. And the special effects are painfully transparent. For the many people who enjoyed this in their youth, I can easily appreciate the nostalgia. I was not able to suspend disbelief enough to enjoy.
