There's a nice feeling to this episode; it captures some of the good feelings of the subject matter, Spring Break. It also sets up a lot of story, with the episodes Not Without My Daughter and especially Spring Breakout from season 2, growing out of Missing Kitty. In one of the documentaries on the first season DVD, someone comments that Mitch Hurwitz's "dream character" was a dynamic woman who causes lots of trouble for the family. Here, his dreams are realized as Kitty, an assistant in the family business, is fired for her insanity and in turn threatens to take the company down. She becomes a great villainess- a wild and loud but dimwitted opponent. For those of us who like GOB's magic, GOB puts on quite the show with his ultimate trick, which is tied in with the Kitty storyline. GOB's storyline also mixes magic with heart as he spends time with his nephew George Michael until Michael tries to separate them.
Also in this episode, Tobias continues to research his film role by going to prison with his father-in-law George and the neo-Nazi White Power Bill, first seen in Key Decisions. Here, White Power Bill meets his end, and it's done in a quirky way. We then get a scene with Tobias opening up to his father-in-law (and singing a butchered version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow) in a scene that is both funny and slightly sweet (and not so sweet, as George does not like being hugged by Tobias- it's typical of Arrested Development to mix heart with dysfunctional family themes).
Rounding out the episode are Lindsay, Maeby, Lucille and Annyong struggling to get the money left by Lucille's deceased mother. It's a slightly cold storyline (they care mostly about the money, though at one point Lindsay, thinking her grandmother is still alive, does express concern that she is in a bad place). It's also humorous, and an interesting plot line, and it's got a twist ending.
