The Civil War
1 July 2008
I'm by no means the most person who knows the most about the time, people, or general occurrences. I don't know any other work by Maxwell. From what I understand, it is quite true to the story. The plot is good. The characters are well-written and nicely developed. Jackson is well-played and portrayed remarkably well. The acting in general is excellent, I'm not sure I saw any that didn't give a commendable performance. Even the kid was utterly convincing. Duvall doesn't let down. Sorvino is again quite strong, and is doing a fine job, in my book, of proving that she can do more and be versatile beyond the comedy roles she is perhaps best remembered for. The production values are incredible, throughout. Every weapon, clothes, props, all of it, amazing. There is a lot of attention to detail. I may not agree with the director's views on Besson's film regarding Jeanne D'arc, but I can't argue with his methods. He seems to spend a lot of time on the movies, and it both shows and pays off. The battle scenes are well-done, and are just one example of the realism in this. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in the period and the events. 7/10
