Waterland isn't All This and Heaven Too **1/2

Warning: Spoilers
Remember the 1940 "All This and Heaven Too" when French teacher Bette Davis relates to her classic about her tragic love affair. Here we go again, sort of in this off-beat film with Jeremy Irons, a history teacher, making history interesting by relating his life to his students with all sorts of sordid details- murder, abortion, suicide, you name it.

Irons, a frustrated man and teacher, takes a surreal trip with his class to 1911 England where George V is about to be crowned king.

The actor is fine. We get wonderful performances by Sinead Cusack as his wife and the young lady who plays her as a 16 year old is in fine form as well.

The problem here is with the writing. Flashbacks, usually a great visual aid in films, doesn't exactly work here. The film is uneven. It does have some sparkle by the end but by then you have become disillusioned.
