Since when do we expect an action movie to be anything but?

Everyone's a critic, but I can't help but notice that critical reviews and forums on sites of all kind online focus on roughly what the academy might think of a movie. I rated this movie so high not because I think of it as Oscar material, but because it was enjoyable to watch and a great ride. I went in wanting to see some action, and that's exactly what it delivered. If you enjoyed anything else that Pierre Morel has been credited with or worked on, you'll enjoy this movie.

Fast paced and action packed all the way through, this was definitely a good action movie. Not too heavy on character development, no long stretches of dialogue, with just pinches of romantic drama and comedic male bonding for breaks. Two main characters are an odd couple: a hardened special agent and the personal aide to a delegate who wants to get his feet wet. The meat of the movie consists of hardcore, intense shoot outs with Special Agent Charlie Wax (John Travolta) swiftly and efficiently killing his way through a drug ring with James Reece (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) following along awe-stricken, trying not to get shot. As the movie progresses we see the diplomatic Reece get put into desperately violent situations which and as he learns to cope we learn the purpose for and the greater story around what Wax has actually been sent there to accomplish. It raps up nicely.

I went out to go see a an action movie and I got a little bit of a story, great action sequences, and a couple of good laughs. Good stuff.
