Patchwork picture...
25 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
As with many of the Poverty Row productions that featured El Santo (not to mention Blue Demon or Mil Mascaras, among many others), SANTO VS. BLUE DEMON IN ATLANTIS makes extensive use of "stock footage" from bigger budget films (in this case, at least one Japanese kaiju classic and an Italian muscleman movie or two). This one's actually more of a showcase for Blue Demon than anything else and it's the action throughout that makes it worth watching (Blue is shown beating Santo in one out of two falls, though he conveniently falls flat on his face- after being drugged- before the tiebreaker can be decided). While this is yet another of those patchwork pictures that rely solely on the good graces of those who have come before for their "higher production values," it's fun and boasts enough action to overcome its deficits.
